Chapter 3 - 3. The Blood Red Egg

I navigated the Magnetic Garden's floating debris and magnetic flora, my enhanced agility allowing me to glide through weightless pockets with ease.

My interface tracked a faint signal—a rhythmic pulse emanating from a towering structure resembling a petrified godhusk limb, its surface veined with glowing circuits.

As I approached, the structure revealed itself as an altar, a biomechanical platform encrusted with pulsating growths and etched with cryptic runes.

At its center stood Merchant vessel M-03, a looming figure, a hybrid of angelic and mechanical design—an androgynous form with hollowed eyes, wings of rusted metal, and a voice like static.

M-03's presence was neutral, neither hostile nor welcoming, its gaze fixed on the Red Egg in my possession.

I presented the Red Egg, its crimson surface quivering as it responded to M-03's energy.

The entity accepted the Egg, its metal wings twitching as it absorbed the egg into a compartment in its chest.

A low hum filled the air, and M-03's voice crackled through my interface: "Vessel, you offer the seed of rebirth. Choose: nurture or consume."

The altar pulsed, revealing two paths.

Nurture: The Egg hatches into an ally, a biomechanical companion to aid me in my journey.

My interface informed me that this would align with the Purity path, emphasizing sparing innocents.

Or I could Consume the Egg's energy, granting a temporary power boost but risking a step toward the path of Destruction.

I had to decide how to proceed with the offering.

The Red Egg's activation was successful, but the choice carried weight, already shaping my moral alignment and future encounters.

The Circuit Bloom remained in my possession, a smaller offering that could be used later or at another altar.

M-03 remained silent, awaiting my decision, but the Garden's distant structures suggested other altars and vessels.

One of them might offer alternative interactions.

I could Instruct M-03 to hatch the Red Egg into an ally, aligning with Purity.

But the ally's nature was an unknown and may require resources to maintain.

I calculated for a moment.

Making my decision I signaled M-03 to nurture the Red Egg, my interface transmitting a command to initiate its hatching.

The entity's metal wings twitched once in response, and the altar pulsed with a low, resonant hum.

The Egg's crimson surface cracked, releasing a faint glow as biomechanical tendrils unfurled from within.

The Egg hatched cleanly, and from its shell emerged a Vessel kin, a small, agile companion resembling a proto-vessel like myself but more delicate—its form a blend of organic tissue and glowing circuitry, with spindly limbs and a single, luminous eye.

My interface registered: ''Vessel kin bonded. Ally acquired. Purity alignment strengthened.''

The Vessel kin, named Lumen by my interface, was a loyal companion with abilities complementary to my own.

Lumens support ability emitted a Guiding Pulse, a soft light that enhanced my perception, revealing hidden paths or relics in the environment.

Lumen could distract enemies with quick, darting movements, granting me an advantage in combat.

Lumen required minimal energy from my systems but drew slightly on the Proto-Vessel Shard's reserves.

Overusing the Guiding Pulses in a short span may weaken the Shard further.

The hatching process was stable, and M-03 withdrew, its form sinking into the altar with a final message: "The seed is sown. Walk the path of light, or falter in shadow."

The altar dimmed, its energy spent, but the Magnetic Garden remained a safe zone, its magnetic flora and floating debris undisturbed.

My alignment with the path of Purity may influence future encounters, attracting allies who value redemption or repelling factions tied to Destruction.

The Magnetic Garden's serene landscape stretched around me, with rusted metal flora, weightless debris, and distant structures hinting at other altars or NPCs.

Lumen's Guiding Pulse highlighted a faint shimmer in the distance—a possible path to a new biome, such as the Head or Body of the godhusk, or another altar.

The Circuit Bloom remained in my inventory, viable for offerings or powering devices.

With the Vessel kin Lumen by my side and the Magnetic Garden as a safe zone, I could continue my journey, rest, or explore further.

At my side, Lumen, the Vessel kin hatched from the Red Egg, hovered with delicate, spindly limbs, its single luminous eye casting a soft Guiding Pulse that highlighted the Garden's shimmering paths.

My choice to nurture the Egg had aligned me with the Purity path, emphasizing redemption and sparing innocents.

I choose to rest and bond, taking advantage of the Magnetic Garden's safety to strengthen my connection with Lumen and consider integrating the Circuit Bloom into my systems for a potential upgrade.

This pause allowed me to stabilize my form and prepare for the moral choices and challenges awaiting in the planet's deeper biomes, such as the Head or Body of the godhusk.

I settled into a clearing surrounded by rusted metal flora, their circuits pulsing faintly in sync with the Garden's magnetic fields.

Lumen hovered nearby, its Guiding Pulse dimming to a gentle glow as it sensed my intent to rest.

My focus was inward, my operator interface calibrating my systems to synchronize with Lumen's biomechanical rhythms, deepening our bond.

The connection strengthened, and Lumen's eye brightened, its movements became more attuned to my own.

My interface updated: ''Bond with Vessel kin Lumen enhanced. Guiding Pulse range extended. Combat support improved. Lumen's abilities now include:''

Extended Guiding Pulse:

The pulse now reveals hidden elements up to 20 feet away (previously 10), detecting relics, traps, or paths with greater clarity.

Enhanced Combat Support:

Lumen's distractions are more effective, Lumen can now roll for evasion or attacks when it assists in combat, though it remains fragile and cannot fight directly.

Circuit Bloom Integration:

I examined the Circuit Bloom, its glowing orb pulsing with latent energy.

I attempted to integrate it into my systems to enhance my interface or augment an ability.

The Bloom's energy merged with my operator interface, boosting its sensory capabilities.

My interface now displayed a Threat Scanner, a rudimentary overlay that warned of nearby dangers, hostile creatures or environmental hazards within a short radius.

The integration was stable but partially drained the Bloom, reducing its viability as an offering, it could still be offered but may now yield a lesser boon.

My interface noted: ''Threat Scanner active. Circuit Bloom weakened.''

The rest stabilized my systems, fully mitigating the lingering damage from Nest L609's hazards.

My bond with Lumen felt almost symbiotic, its presence a quiet reassurance in the Garden's eerie calm.

The integration of the Circuit Bloom enhanced my preparedness, though the slight drain on the Proto-Vessel Shard, from supporting Lumen and the Bloom prompts a warning: Shard energy low.

Further augmentation was risky.

The Magnetic Garden remained safe, its floating debris and magnetic flora undisturbed, but Lumen's Guiding Pulse continued to highlight a shimmering path in the distance—a potential route to a new biome or altar.

The Garden's serenity felt temporary, as if the planet's deeper secrets awaited my next move.

The clearing was surrounded by weightless debris and glowing vines, with distant structures suggesting altars or an angelic figure.

The shimmering path, now clearer due to Lumen's enhanced Guiding Pulse, led toward a towering godhusk limb, possibly an entrance to the Head or Body biome.

The Threat Scanner hummed softly, detecting no immediate dangers but indicating faint activity beyond the Garden's borders.

Resting and bonding aligns with the Purity path, emphasizing reflection and connection.

The Circuit Bloom's integration enhanced my role as a vessel navigating moral choices, but the Shard's dwindling energy hinted at future trade-offs.

The Magnetic Garden's safe zone offered a final chance to prepare before facing the planet's harsher realms.
