Jane slammed her metal palm against the barrier.
Nothing.
The surface rippled like dark glass, Levi's magic pushing back harder the moment Jane touched it. The runes embedded in the walls flared brighter, tightening, responding not to threat—but to intent.
"Levi!" Jane shouted, striking it again. "Let me out!"
Pain flared up her arm, the vibration rattling straight through the metal and into her bones. Purple light flickered faintly beneath her skin, her dragon blood reacting violently to the resistance.
Outside, Levi froze midair.
She felt it instantly—Jane's presence pressing against the spell, desperate, frightened, furious. Her chest tightened painfully.
Jane was trying to break through.
"No…" Levi whispered.
She turned her focus inward, forcing more power into the enchantment. The barrier thickened, darkening, its magic becoming absolute.
Inside the hideout, Jane cried out in frustration as the barrier shoved her back a step.
"Why are you doing this?" Jane screamed, tears blurring her vision. "You can't keep fighting alone!"
Levi squeezed her eyes shut.
"I have to," she said quietly, though Jane couldn't hear her.
"Just this once… obey me."
Far beyond the hideout, the city skyline burned.
Levi's gaze snapped toward the distant destruction where Shax had been thrown. Even weakened, even wounded—he would rise again. He always did.
Her wings beat hard, stirring the air into a violent spiral.
With one last look toward the hideout, Levi turned away.
"Stay safe," she murmured. "Please."
Then she shot forward, a black streak tearing across the sky as she flew toward the city—toward General Shax—toward the battle she intended to finish alone.
Behind her, the barrier pulsed violently as Jane collapsed against it, breath ragged, glowing veins flickering brighter with every heartbeat.
The distance between them had never felt wider.
And both of them knew—
Whatever happened next would change everything.
