Chapter 138 - Book Two: Chapter Thirty Eight

The one thorn that didn't disintegrate on Thea's golden shield wall pierced the heart of one of the women in black. The sister went down in an utter collapse. Quaithe shouted for the older woman to begin the spell. Maggy produced the ashes and ruby necklace and began a summoning spell. The other women in black, except Quaithe, joined in the summoning chant. A cloudy form appeared on the ground near the ashes and necklace; it wavered in and out of existence. Maggy shrieked, "The Lord of Light summons you to battle Melisandre!!" But the form could not solidify enough. "We need more Quaithe; it isn't enough!" Maggy shouted. Quaithe was busy holding the mages near Jun Wei at bay with spell after spell. Thea stepped forward and shouted, "R'hllor," and slowly rose into the air, arms outstretched. She glowed golden and then slowly began to dissolve into light. The particles of her light coalesced around the indistinct form of Melisandre.

Across the field of battle, Hassan felt something tug at his insides; his golden sword wavered for a moment, and he heard Thea's exclamation. And then he felt she was gone; the Old Ones had called her away from him and everyone. The battle continued unabated, and he was forced to focus on it. Bronn looked at him sideways as he fought a huge Zonian. The battle was turning in their favor, but it was still nip and tuck.

Next to Jun Wei, the five mages were defending against an onslaught from Quaithe. The black mage saw the summoning spell and shouted out, "That summoned form is dangerous; try to defeat it before it can become solid!" Just as Melisandre's form started becoming solid, the grey mage hit it with a transformation spell. Melisandre stood, and her young woman form became her crone form; the golden light around her glowed strongly, and she began to transform again. The grey mage laughed, thinking he had disrupted her transformation, but that laugh died in his throat. Melisandre's form became something resembling a demon from hell. Fire burst from its hands and arms and began swirling around like a storm. With a roar, the summons moved forward towards the enemy mages, flames destroying everything in its path. The movement became a mad dash forward at the clot of mages and Jun Wei. The dark green mage cast a poison spell at the oncoming form of Melisandre, but it was countered by a flaming blast that evaporated the mage as he stood next to Jun Wei. Jun Wei shrieked and cast a personal shield from some trinket he had on his person. It saved him because the form of Melisandre closed on the group and, waving both arms aloft, created a maelstrom of flame. The flame began in a tight circle around Jun Wei and expanded. The other mages began furiously casting to save themselves but perished one by one in the scorching flames. Only Hao managed to survive by deluging himself with water, over and over. The circle of fire expanded until the other Zonian troops began to throw down their weapons and run into the arms of the Westerosi troops. Everyone backed away until the flames started dying.

When the flames subsided, all the mages except Hao were dead, and he lay in a soggy heap next to the fading shield of Jun Wei. There was no sign of Melisandre, and the ruby necklace was shattered and lay broken. Quaithe strode forward and searched the smoking remains of the black mage; inside his robes, she found a grimore and took it. Maggy and the women in black just retreated to their tent, and the combatants on the field blinked at each other. The fight was done; the invasion of Westeros was over for now, and the magnitude of it began settling in their minds. On the wall and in the field, two telepaths had been trying to comprehend and transmit what had been happening. A cheer rose along the walls of the tree-kin fortress, like a long release of exhausted tension spiraling up into the clouds.

For seven days, all the troops helped set the tree-kin area right. The wind trains were stripped of their walls and allowed to go their way. 2000 Zonian prisoners were taken to King's Landing and Brandon's Rest. The gated walls came down, and everyone rested and healed. On the fifth day, a huge feast happened, and the celebration continued well into the night. Jun Wei and Hao were stripped of their trinkets and rings, robes were removed, and they were bound and gagged to make them harmless. They were hoisted off to Brandon's Rest for questioning and prison.

The women in black spent a day resting, and then they and Maggy were on their way back to Essos. The livery men packed the tent and sundry items up, and they left. The Bravvos company watched them go, and the captain said, "I'll not worry for the safety of those ladies," and the others laughed. Three weeks later, the women reboarded their carriage, and in less than two months they were aboard their ship headed back east to Essos.

When the train tracks had all been repaired and the trains resumed their regular schedules, Brann came to Brandon's Rest. He first stopped at the tree-kin enclave and spoke at length with their elders. He gave them and their people a royal commendation for having stood in the breach for their new homeland. The commendation gave them full ownership of the enclave in perpetuity.
