The morning light spilled across Lila's apartment, and she woke with a smile that hadn't left her face since last night. She dressed for work humming softly, her heart light. Even though whispers still lingered in the office corridors, rumors that she might still be dating Kevin, she didn't care. She knew the truth. She knew who her man was. Luca.
As she walked into the building, her mind drifted back to their morning conversation.
Her phone had buzzed just as she was sipping her coffee.
"Good morning, princess," Luca's voice came through, warm and teasing.
She laughed softly. "Good morning, bae."
"You sound happy," he said. "Tell me, what's making you smile like that?"
"You," she whispered, shy.
He chuckled. "The big-time lawyer, shy again. I love it. You're adorable when you blush."
She rolled her eyes, though her cheeks burned. "Stop teasing me."
"I can't help it. You're mine now, and I'm going to remind you every chance I get."
They talked for nearly half an hour, about her plans, about his, about nothing and everything. He asked her what she would do today, and she said, "Just work. I need to lock in and finish everything."
"Same here," he replied. "But I'll be working late. My father's coming to the office today, and that means I'll have to stay longer. I won't be able to pick you up, but I'll call you after work. Promise."
She smiled, her heart warm. "I'll be waiting."
Now, sitting at her desk hours later, she replayed that conversation in her mind. It made her day brighter, even as she pushed through her tasks. She locked in, focused, and by the end of the day, she had finished everything. She was proud, satisfied, and already looking forward to his call.
Across the city, Luca was in a different world. He walked into the boardroom, sharp in a tailored charcoal suit, his tie perfectly knotted, his hair slicked back with precision. He looked every inch the ruthless businessman his father had raised him to be.
The meeting stretched for hours. Across the table sat his father, a man whose presence alone was enough to silence the room. He had decided to visit one of Luca's many companies, and that meant Luca had to show his other side, the cold, calculating leader.
His father believed kindness was weakness. He believed listening to subordinates was foolish. He had raised Luca to be his exact twin. But Luca's mother and elder sister, Jessi, had softened him, taught him empathy, taught him how to build trust. That was the Luca who had friends, loyal employees, and most importantly, the Luca who had fallen for Lila.
When the meeting finally ended, his father left, not without leaving fear in the hearts of everyone else. But Luca didn't flinch. He had long stopped caring about his father's approval.
Finally free, Luca picked up his phone and dialed Lila.
"Hey, princess," he said, his voice softer now. "How was your day?"
She smiled, leaning back in her chair. "Busy, but good. I finished everything I needed to. What about you?"
He chuckled. "Long. Too long. But hearing your voice makes it better."
She laughed, shy again. "You're too much."
"I'm not enough," he teased. "Tell me more. What did you do today? I want details."
She told him everything—her meetings, her lunch break with colleagues, the little victory of finishing her tasks early. He listened intently, asking questions, laughing at her jokes, making her feel like every detail mattered.
Then he grew flirty. "You know, I kept thinking about you all day. About how you looked last night. That gown… I swear, I almost forgot how to breathe."
Her cheeks burned. "Luca…"
"See? Shy again," he teased. "I love it."
"Stop," she whispered, smiling.
"Never," he said. "Switch to video call. I want to see your face."
She rolled her eyes but agreed, and soon his screen lit up with her smile.
"Beautiful," he murmured. "Now tell me about your day again, but let me watch you while you do."
She laughed, shaking her head. "You're impossible."
Then she asked, "What about your day? You said your father came to the office?"
His expression shifted, just slightly. "Yeah. He did."
She tilted her head. "I didn't know he visits. Now that I'm no longer working there, the real boss shows up, huh?" She grinned. "I'm sure you enjoyed your dad's company."
His smile faded. "No one enjoys when he's around. Trust me."
She blinked, surprised. "Oh…"
He shook his head quickly. "Anyway, let's change the topic. I don't want to waste our time talking about him."
Not wanting to overstep, she nodded. "Okay."
They talked for another hour, laughing, teasing, exchanging soft kisses through the screen. When they finally said goodnight, she lay in bed, staring at the ceiling.
She replayed the call in her mind, especially the moment his expression changed when she mentioned his father. She knew he loved his mother. He had spoken about his sister, his cousins. But never about his father.
She wondered if they were close. She wondered if she had done well as a girlfriend by not asking more. A pang of guilt touched her heart. Should I have asked? Should I have pushed?
But she let it go, whispering to herself, "He'll tell me when he's ready."
And with that thought, she drifted into sleep, her heart full of love but her mind heavy with questions.
The next day did not begin with the same lightness.
Lila woke with Luca's kisses still lingering in her memory, but her heart carried a weight she couldn't name. She moved through her routine, smiling at her reflection, yet beneath the surface was unease. She remembered the way his expression had changed when she mentioned his father. That shadow had unsettled her, and now it clung to her thoughts.
At the office, the whispers about Kevin grew louder. A colleague, bold enough to tease, leaned close and said, "So, still with Kevin?"
Lila's smile faltered. She brushed it off, but the sting remained. She wanted to shout the truth—that Luca was her man, that he was the one who made her blush, who made her laugh, who made her heart race. But she stayed silent. Protecting what they had felt more important than proving it to anyone else.
Yet the silence planted doubt. Why am I hiding him? Why does it feel like I'm protecting something fragile?
Meanwhile, Luca was locked in another battle. His father had returned, unannounced, to the company. The boardroom was tense, the air heavy with fear. Luca sat tall, his suit immaculate, his voice sharp as steel. He commanded respect, but his father's presence was suffocating.
"You're too lenient," his father said coldly. "You let them speak too much. Weakness, Luca. That's what they see."
Luca's jaw tightened. He wanted to argue, but he knew it was useless. His father thrived on control, on dominance. And Luca had learned long ago that defiance only fueled the fire.
But inside, he was torn. He wasn't his father. He didn't want to be. He wanted to be the man who could laugh with friends, who could love Lila without fear. Yet every time his father appeared, that ruthless side of him resurfaced.

When the day finally ended, Luca called Lila.
"Hey, princess," he said, his voice softer now. "How was your day?"
She smiled, though her heart was heavy. "Busy. The usual. But… people keep asking about Kevin."
His tone sharpened. "Kevin again? Why does it matter what they think?"
"It doesn't," she said quickly. "I know who my man is. But it's frustrating. I want to tell them. I want to tell everyone."
Silence stretched between them.
"Lila," he said finally, "I don't want you dragged into my world. Not yet. It's complicated."
Her chest tightened. "Complicated? Or are you hiding me?"
His breath caught. "No. Never. I'm protecting you. My father… he's not someone you want to be exposed to. He'll use you against me if he knows how much you mean to me."
Her heart ached. "But Luca, I don't want to be hidden. I want to stand beside you. Not behind you."
---
The tension thickened.
"Do you trust me?" he asked, his voice low.
"I do," she whispered. "But trust doesn't mean silence. I want to be part of your life, not a secret."
He closed his eyes, torn between love and fear. "You are my life, Lila. But if my father finds out… he'll destroy us. He'll destroy you."
Her voice trembled. "Then let him try. I'm not afraid of him. I'm afraid of losing you because you're too busy protecting me instead of letting me in."
The silence was heavy, charged with love and conflict.
Finally, he whispered, "You're stronger than I thought."
"And you're softer than you admit," she replied.
He smiled faintly, though his eyes were shadowed. "That softness is because of you. Don't ever doubt that."
They ended the call with lingering kisses through the screen, but when Lila lay in bed, her mind raced. She thought of his father, of the fear in Luca's voice, of the way he tried to shield her.
She realized something: Luca had never spoken of his father with warmth. Only with shadows. And now those shadows were creeping closer, threatening not just his empire, but their fragile, beautiful love.
