The drive to the airport was tense. Ruby's phone buzzed with an unknown number. She answered, but the line was filled with heavy, jagged breathing.
"Hello? Who is this?" she asked, her brow furrowing with a mix of concern and curiosity. Max leaned in closer. The stillness of the air added to the tension, making it feel as though time had paused.
"Let me see who it is," Max murmured, his voice low and edged with uncertainty. A sense of apprehension nibbled at him, but deep down, an instinct told him it was Violet calling out, and he felt an undeniable urgency to protect her. He braced himself, not willing to let anything or anyone come between them.
"I don't know the caller," Ruby repiled confused as well, but the moment the caller heard Max's deep voice in the background, the line went dead.
It was Seron, clutching to his burner phone in a dark room, trying to warn her of the trap he had helped set, but he was too late. "I hope you are okay, Ruby," he thought.
