The car glided toward the overpass, the engine humming a deceptive lullaby. Max's eyes were on it. He knew his enemies, he knew they wouldn't just rely on forged papers and board votes. They would try to stop them from ever reaching the building.
"Look," Max muttered, his voice dropping into a low, tactical tone.
Just as their car cleared the shadow of the overpass, a hail of gunfire shattered the silence. Bullets peppered the armored frame of the vehicle they had just stepped out of moments before.
"They're trying to kill us," Ruby hissed, her eyes flashing with a murderous light. "I want to end them. I want to kill them with my bare hands." She gripped the handle of her bag, where the golden gun sat waiting. Then, her gaze shifted to the driver still in the line of fire. "Will he be okay?"
"He's one of my best," Max assured her, pulling her into the cover of a concrete pillar. "He's already out and moving. Trust him."
