Even if the Director genuinely cared for Rimuru, that care was ultimately in service of his grand objective.
Once Rimuru clarified this in his mind, the path forward was obvious. He had to strip away the emotional manipulation and drag the conversation back to the core facts. He couldn't let useless sentiment cloud his judgment.
"It doesn't matter," Rimuru said, keeping his voice guarded. "But you said my childhood state was essentially identical to that of a Witch..."
"Then you should also understand what a 'Witch's Dream' represents, correct?"
"Of course," Rimuru nodded, reciting the textbook definition effortlessly. "A Witch's Dream is the spark created by the collision of magical energy and Mystery. Therefore, Witches can easily convert dreams into magecraft, or even inherit knowledge directly through them."
"But I don't have that ability..."
"That is because, under the stimulation of your immense magical power, your dreams mutated into something else entirely," the Director sighed. "And this is precisely why we believe you can save the Human Order."
"What ability?"
"Revelation."
"Hah?!"
Revelation?!
I have Revelation? How did I not know about this?!
Rimuru knew exactly what that skill was. It was the signature ability of Joan of Arc, one of his waifus! It was a skill that allowed the user to hear the "Voice of the Heavens" and receive guidance on the optimal path.
Rimuru froze, frantically querying his internal support system.
Great Sage! Do I have the [Revelation] skill?
[Answer: Negative. It is recommended that the host ceases having unrealistic delusions.]
In other words: You're dreaming!
Rimuru was dumbfounded. If I don't have it, why does this thousand-year-old monster think I have such a broken ability?
Wait a minute...
A horrifying thought crossed his mind.
Did I... while my memories were suppressed... have dreams about the plot and then blurt out spoilers like a sleep-talking leaker?!
Sweating nervously, Rimuru tested the waters. "Regarding this... Revelation... How did you determine I possess it? I had no idea. Could you be mistaken?"
"We hoped we were mistaken, too."
The Director took a sip of his tea. He lifted his shadowed face, looking at Rimuru with a gaze that seemed to say, 'You little brat, you're still pretending?'
"In the beginning, your dreams didn't attract much attention."
"As you grew older and learned to speak, you would often babble about knowledge you shouldn't have possessed. Concepts like 'Magic Circuits' or 'Spirit Mediums'..."
"But that wasn't too strange. Witches inherit knowledge through dreams, and Phantasmal bloodlines often carry ancestral memories. So, while people were attentive, they didn't think too much of it."
"Until one day, you spoke a name."
"Arcueid Brunestud..."
Rimuru felt his soul leave his body. He physically recoiled, burying his face in the sofa cushions and curling into a blue ball of shame. He wanted to die.
"Arcueid... the Princess of the True Ancestors..."
The Director sighed heavily. "That is an existence even your parents knew nothing about. It is a secret buried deep within the dark side of the world."
"Stop! Enough!" Rimuru groaned from the sofa cushions. "Okay, fine! What else did I say? A single name doesn't prove I have Revelation!"
"As you grew up, your communication skills improved. Strange vocabulary began to appear. Words like 'Gacha,' 'Single Pull,' 'Rate Up is a Lie'..."
The Director's expression grew perplexed for a moment, clearly treating these terms as some incomprehensible ancient tongue. But he quickly returned to the main topic.
"When you were five years old, in order to verify our hypothesis, I personally came to have a chat with you."
"?" Rimuru popped his head up. "You interrogated a five-year-old?!"
Have you no shame?!
"Ahem. Do you know what the result was?"
"Let me guess, you verified it?" Rimuru stretched his limbs, giving up on the shame. "You're telling me all this now to say... everything you dragged out of me back then actually happened, right?"
"Yes, and no," the Director shook his head. "Due to the chaotic nature of Revelation, many things appeared as fleeting flashes. Most of the events you mentioned haven't happened yet."
"Until seven years ago, Rimuru."
"Seven years ago..." Rimuru lowered his eyes. "I see... That was when I went to Japan."
"Correct. You saved May Riddell. You assisted Aozaki Aoko in defeating Aozaki Touko."
The Director lowered his head, his voice deep and solemn.
"That exact scenario... was something you had described in a dream years prior."
"You saw it. And not only that... you changed the original trajectory."
Hearing this, Rimuru felt a wave of helplessness wash over him.
It seemed that his sealed self had been heavily influenced by his subconscious knowledge of the Fate lore. The closer he got to a major plot point, the more his instincts had driven him to intervene.
This allowed him to participate in events like Mahoyo without blowing his cover, setting up a nice foundation for his awakened self.
But it had also created a massive misunderstanding, specifically, this "Revelation" nonsense the Director was spouting.
He wanted to tell the Director the truth: I don't have Revelation. I'm just a transmigrator with a wiki in my head.
But he stopped himself.
First, the truth was too dangerous. Second, even if he could explain it, stripping away the mystique of "Revelation" would drastically lower his value in the Director's eyes.
This misunderstanding... I can use it.
Rimuru made a quick calculation. Being a "Prophet" gave him leverage.
"However," Rimuru said, pivoting the conversation, "I don't recall seeing a vision of human extinction."
In his memories of the future, specifically the Fate/Grand Order timeline, the story was about the Masters of Chaldea saving the world while collecting waifus. He didn't remember a version where humanity just straight-up lost without a fight.
"The visions you receive are likely centered around those closest to you," the Director said, sounding relieved that Rimuru was essentially admitting to the ability.
"Oh, that makes sense. I'm not some noble hero, after all," Rimuru said, unashamed. He smiled righteously. "I'm selfish. I don't think I have the capacity to save humanity."
"But you will inevitably be a participant," the Director countered. "As a hybrid of Phantasmal Species and Man, you possess a lifespan far exceeding that of normal magi. Coupled with your talent... many people are betting on you, Rimuru. Myself included."
"..."
"My familiars informed me that the meeting today went smoothly."
The Director stood up and walked to the window, gazing at the sliver of sunlight.
"The Future Observation Nexus is a secret shared by the Three Great Organizations. Within the Clock Tower, only the Heads of the Three Great Aristocratic Families are aware of it. Even Eulyphis hasn't been granted access yet."
"You've met all three of them today, haven't you?"
"Yes," Rimuru looked up. "Barthomeloi, Valualeta, and..."
"Trambelio. Heh. That old fox... even I can't guess what he's thinking." The Director chuckled dryly. He turned back to Rimuru.
"Barthomeloi, in truth, does not agree with our decision. Her innate arrogance prevents her from pinning the fate of the world on anyone but herself. To her, relying on you is no different from waiting for death."
"I agree with her," Rimuru nodded quickly. "She's absolutely right."
The Director ignored his self-deprecation. "But Inorai supports you. So, Rimuru... you can move forward boldly. Do not be afraid."
"Inorai supports me?" Rimuru looked confused. "But you said my family betrayed her faction..."
"If Inorai hadn't allowed it, do you really think a family that betrayed one of the Three Great Lords would have survived to this day?"
"Uh..."
Rimuru opened his mouth, but no words came out.
He fell silent. Right. If the Queen of the Democratic Faction wanted us dead, we would have been crushed long ago.
"However, rather than 'support,' it might be more accurate to say she is 'auditing' you," the Director said, his voice dropping. "That is Inorai's style. She is kind, yes. But remember, she is the same woman who would unhesitatingly issue a Sealing Designation on her most beloved apprentice if they stepped out of line."
The sunset glow seeping through the curtains had turned a deep, blood orange. The Director seemed to realize that too much time had passed.
He sighed, breaking the long silence.
"Alright. It is time for you to go."
"In all likelihood... this will be the last time we meet."
"I called you here today to tell you how many hopes you carry. And... to tell you not to misunderstand the Lords."
"I noticed during the meeting that you were wary of most of them. That is unnecessary. A Magus looks at the world through the lens of profit and the pursuit of the Root. That makes them predictable. You can view them not as enemies, but as forces to be controlled."
The Director stepped closer, his form dissolving into the shadows of the room.
"In the end... Rimuru, if 'Saving the Human Order' is too vague a concept for you, then let me tell you my personal wish."
"My time is running out. I need someone to take my place. Someone to guard the boundary between Phantasmal Species and Humanity. Someone to protect the legacy of the Clock Tower."
"Director... I..."
Before Rimuru could finish his sentence, the Director waved his hand gently. A soft force pushed Rimuru out of the room.
As the door closed, the Director's final words drifted out, heavy with expectation.
"If possible... I wish for you to become... the Director."
