Chapter 14 - THE RIPPLE OF RESPECT

The morning after Frank's first stand, the town felt… different.

He walked the familiar streets, expecting the usual silence, the usual hurried glances from people who ignored one another. But something had shifted. Even the wind seemed to carry whispers.

A few boys from school stopped mid-laugh when they saw him pass. A shopkeeper peeked from behind his stall, a faint nod acknowledging Frank's presence. Nothing loud, nothing dramatic—just subtle recognition.

Frank's chest tightened. This was new. He hadn't expected anyone to notice. He hadn't acted for praise. Yet, here it was: respect, small but real, spreading quietly through the town.

At school, he noticed it too. The same boys who had teased him before now hesitated, watching him approach. Their laughter was softer, their confidence slightly diminished. Frank didn't smile. He didn't gloat. He just kept walking.

"You've begun," he said simply.

Frank frowned. "Begun what?"

"To stand," the man replied. "Not just for yourself, but for others. Courage is contagious. You don't see it yet, but the town is already learning that fear isn't the only choice."

Frank studied him. "But it's only one night. What if they forget?"

Frank's thoughts drifted to the alleys, the streets, the faces of the people he had saved—even if they didn't know it yet. He felt a new weight in his chest. Responsibility. Not the heavy, suffocating weight of fear, but the steady, grounding weight of choice.

Choice to stand. Choice to protect. Choice to lead.

As he walked home, shadows stretched along the streets, longer than usual. But Frank didn't feel afraid. The night had changed him, and for the first time, the darkness felt like a challenge to meet, not a force to flee.

And somewhere, in the corners of the town that had ignored hope for so long, people whispered:

"There he stands…"
