Chapter 17 - Chapter 17

Chapter 17

The announcement was posted at noon.

Not on Kairo's door.

Not delivered privately.

It appeared on every public slate across the academy.

Sanctioned Evaluation Match

Participants:

— Kairo (D-Rank, Unclassified)

— Valen Marr (C-Rank, Bound Weapon Bearer)

Purpose:

Doctrine Validation Exercise

Location:

Outer Proving Grounds

Attendance:

Mandatory

The academy did not whisper anymore.

It spoke loudly because it expected obedience.

Rhen found Kairo at the sanitation tunnels, blade in hand, cleaning ichor from stone as if nothing in the world had changed.

"They're not even hiding it," Rhen said, breathless. "Valen Marr. C-rank. He carries a relic."

Kairo nodded once. "I know."

"You know him?" Rhen asked.

"I know the type," Kairo replied. "He's proud of borrowed strength."

Rhen swallowed. "People are saying this is an execution."

Kairo straightened slowly. "Executions are quiet."

He looked toward the surface.

"This is theater."

The Outer Proving Grounds were carved from black stone and reinforced with layered suppression arrays. Thousands of students filled the tiered stands. Instructors lined the perimeter. Record crystals hovered like cold, unblinking eyes.

Valen Marr stood at the center of the arena.

He was tall, broad-shouldered, wearing a mantle marked with lineage sigils. At his side rested a weapon that hummed with contained power — a long spear of white-gold metal, runes spiraling along its shaft.

Bound relic.

Name etched into reality.

Sunpiercer — C-Rank Ascendant Weapon

When Kairo entered the arena, the noise shifted.

Not cheers.

Not jeers.

Unease.

He carried no mantle. No sigils. Just steel.

Valen smiled when he saw him.

"So you're the sanitation anomaly," Valen said loudly, voice amplified by mana. "I expected something more impressive."

Kairo stopped ten paces away. "You're here to prove doctrine," he said calmly. "Not to talk."

Valen laughed. "Doctrine already proved itself. I'm just here to remind people."

He lifted Sunpiercer.

The weapon responded instantly, flaring with controlled radiance. Mana pressure rolled outward, forcing weaker students to avert their gaze.

"This," Valen continued, "is power acknowledged by the system. By blessings. By history."

He pointed the spear at Kairo.

"And you're a mistake."

The adjudicator raised his hand. "Combat begins on—"

Valen moved before the signal finished.

The spear struck like a falling sun.

Light compressed into a killing line, tearing across the arena with enough force to shear stone. Kairo moved on instinct, rolling aside as the ground where he'd stood vaporized.

The crowd roared.

Valen didn't let up.

He advanced relentlessly, spear thrusting again and again, each strike reinforced by blessing amplification. The weapon guided his hand, corrected angles, fed him optimal attack vectors.

Bound weapons fought for their wielders.

Kairo felt it immediately.

This wasn't a duel.

It was a demonstration.

He ducked under a sweeping arc, the edge of light grazing his shoulder. Pain flared. Flesh burned. He slid back, boots carving furrows in the stone.

Valen smiled wider. "See? You're already bleeding. That's what happens when you fight without a system."

Kairo didn't answer.

He waited.

Valen lunged again, overextending just slightly.

Kairo stepped inside the spear's range.

Steel met light.

The sound was wrong.

Not a clash.

A refusal.

The unbound blade didn't shatter. Didn't recoil. It slid along Sunpiercer's shaft, scraping runes as if studying them.

Valen's eyes widened for a fraction of a second.

Kairo used that moment to strike.

Not hard.

Precise.

The flat of his blade slammed into Valen's wrist.

Bones cracked.

Sunpiercer wavered.

The crowd gasped.

Valen snarled and poured more mana into the spear. "Obey!"

The relic responded, flaring brighter, forcing the weapon back into alignment.

Kairo felt the pressure spike.

The spear punched through his guard and drove straight into his chest.

Pain became everything.

The force lifted him off his feet and slammed him into the far barrier. Runes flared as suppression fields struggled to contain the impact.

Kairo slid down the wall, blood soaking his clothes.

The arena went silent.

Valen lowered the spear, breathing hard. "Stay down," he said. "You've made your point."

Kairo coughed.

Blood spilled from his mouth.

Inside him, something stirred.

Not the blade.

The Ledger.

Darkness folded inward.

Not unconsciousness.

Accounting.

[DEATH LEDGER ACTIVATED]

Cause of Death:

— Internal organ rupture

— Mana-induced cardiac failure

Processing…

The world froze.

Sound vanished.

Then the Ledger opened fully for the first time in public space.

Proceed?

Kairo's consciousness hovered on the edge.

He remembered Rhen's face.

Seris's warning.

The blade learning restraint.

He made his choice.

Proceed.

Reality snapped back.

Kairo's eyes opened.

The barrier behind him cracked outward as he stood.

Gasps turned into screams.

Valen staggered, suddenly pale, his grip on Sunpiercer faltering. The spear dimmed, runes flickering erratically.

"What did you do?" Valen whispered.

Kairo stepped forward.

He could feel it now — a faint warmth in his chest, a subtle alignment in his movements. Not borrowed dominance.

Understanding.

Sunpiercer lashed out again, but its guidance was off. The strike came a fraction too wide.

Kairo's blade slid in.

One clean motion.

Steel through throat.

Valen's eyes widened in shock.

He collapsed, blood pooling beneath him.

Silence crushed the arena.

A C-rank bearer lay dead.

And Kairo stood over him.

Alive.

The adjudicator's voice shook. "Match… concluded."

Record crystals trembled.

Instructors stared.

Students whispered in terror.

Because the system had failed publicly.

The Ledger whispered again.

Kairo looked down at his blade.

It was no longer merely warm.

It was alert.

Aware.

Hungry — but disciplined.

He turned away from Valen's body.

And the academy, for the first time, looked at him not as a problem…

…but as a threat that had tasted sanctioned blood.
