Chapter 2 - The truth behind the mask

Keifer

I could hear every word echo down the corridor before she even reached me — the sharp rhythm of her shoes hitting the floor, the kind that always came before she said something that would change everything.

Jay‑jay.

I told myself I'd be ready when she found out. That I'd be cold, detached, unshakable. But the moment her eyes met mine, I already knew I wasn't built for this.

"So it's true," she said, voice steady but eyes shaking. "You used me."

There it was. The moment that would break us.

For a split second, I thought about telling the truth — that my father's warnings weren't idle, that if she stayed close to me, she'd end up on his list next. He already scared Aries into silence; Jay‑jay would be next if he thought she mattered to me.

But she did matter to me. Too much. Enough that the only way to keep her safe was to make her hate me.

So I forced the words out, each one like glass.

"Yeah. I used you. And the whole class knew."

Her silence hit hard. She blinked once, twice — tears rising but refusing to fall.

"You're lying," she whispered.

"No," I said, colder. "It was a plan. You were a way to get back at Aries for what he did to Percy."

The air between us froze. Even the sound of rain felt distant.

"You're disgusting," she said finally, her voice trembling. "You made me believe you cared."

"I didn't," I lied. "You were just convenient."

Watching her face collapse in real time felt like punishment carved into my chest. She turned away before I could breathe again.

Jay‑jay

I couldn't even look at him. The hallway tilted and spun, my heart twisting with every step I took back.

All those late‑night talks. The fights. The laughter. The way he'd look at me like I was the only one who could quiet his chaos — all of it just lies?

"You won, Keifer," I spat, barely holding it together. "Tell Section E they did a great job. Aries is gone, Percy's alive, and you got what you wanted."

His eyes flickered for a second — something soft, torn — but then that wall went back up.

"Goodbye, Jay," he said.

I left before he could see me cry.

Keifer

She walked away, and the moment she disappeared around the corner, I finally let the mask crack. My legs felt weak. I pressed my hand against the wall just to stay upright. My chest wouldn't stop burning.

"This is for her," I told myself. "She'll be safe now."

But the words didn't help. They sounded hollow, same as my heartbeat.

Every instinct screamed to chase her, to tell her I didn't mean it — to grab her hand, fall to my knees, anything. But if I went after her, my family would see. They'd find her. And then the last good thing in my life would vanish for real.

So I let her go.

Jay‑jay

By the time I got home, I couldn't feel anything. I sat on my bed, staring at the acceptance letter folded in my bag — the one for London. Two weeks ago, it felt like a dream. Now, it felt like escape.

The suitcase sat half‑packed in the corner. I finally pulled it open and started filling it. One shirt, then another. Each fold felt final.

Even Percy didn't question it when I said I was leaving. He saw my face and just nodded — quiet, scared to ask.

"I'll be okay," I told him.

I wasn't sure if I believed it.

Keifer

I waited until the hall was empty before whispering the truth she deserved.

"I didn't use you, Jay. I loved you. That's why I had to let you go."

But the only one who heard me was the rain.
