I knew something was wrong the moment I stepped inside. Not in a system is screaming way, much worse, in a quiet is watching you way. The cafe was already open, morning light slanting through the windows like it always did. The espresso machine hummed, cups clinked. Michael's laugh drifted from the back, followed by the unmistakable sound of something being dropped and mourned. Normal, too normal, and then I saw him.
