Chapter 1 - Prologue

The night was quiet, but inside a lavish room, the silence was slowly shattered by Bernadeth's cries of pain.

She couldn't sleep. Clutching the blanket tightly, sweat dripped down her forehead. Every breath felt heavy; every movement carried a sharp ache that seemed to split her body apart.

"R-Rodolfo…"

Her voice trembled as she whispered his name.

"It hurts… I don't think I can do this…"

Rodolfo sprang to his feet at the side of the bed. His eyes were a mixture of fear and longing—fear that something might go wrong, longing because he knew this was the night they had prayed for for so long.

"You can do this, my love," he murmured, taking her hand in his.

"We've prayed for this moment… you're not alone."

No time was wasted. In the middle of the night, Bernadeth was rushed to the hospital—the same hospital they had visited countless times, where they had cried and lost hope more than once.

[Hospital – Delivery Room]

The delivery room lights were bright. Nurses and doctors moved around briskly, trying to soothe Bernadeth.

"Ma'am, just a little longer," said a nurse.

"You're almost there."

Rodolfo held his wife's hand tightly. He could feel the strength and fragility in her grip—as if Bernadeth was passing all her pain and fear to him.

"Rodolfo…" Bernadeth cried. "What if… I can't do this?"

He leaned forward, pressing their foreheads together.

"You can," he said firmly.

"If there's one woman who deserves to be a mother… it's you, Bernadeth."

Moments later, a loud, piercing cry echoed through the room.

A cry that seemed to stop the world.

"Congratulations!" the doctor announced with a smile.

"It's a baby boy."

Bernadeth collapsed, tears streaming down her face—tears of exhaustion, pain, and overwhelming joy. The baby was placed in her arms: tiny, red, but alive.

"Our son… Rodolfo," she whispered, smiling through her tears. "He's such a blessing…"

"Lexus," Rodolfo said, his voice trembling. "His name… Lexus Marasigan."

A miracle baby. After years of waiting, after being told by doctors that their chances were only fifty-fifty, fate had granted them a miracle.

The sole heir to their name, their wealth, and their dreams.

Hours later, baby Lexus was taken to the nursery. He lay in a small crib, a tag attached to him:

"Lexus Marasigan – Baby Boy"

He slept soundly, unaware of the world he had entered—or the fate that awaited him. The hallway lights were off, except for a single LED casting a soft glow over the nursery. Outside, a woman stood quietly.

Amanda.

Her face pale, hands trembling as she held another baby. A cloth covered her head, obscuring her face so no one would recognize her, should anyone notice. It had been less than a day since she had given birth as well.

Her son slept quietly too—but her heart was in turmoil.

The man who had promised responsibility had abandoned her. She had no family, no money, no future to give her child. She worked in a bar, barely scraping by.

But there was one thing she knew.

She knew who Rodolfo Marasigan was.

She knew how wealthy he was.

And she had loved him in secret, despite everything.

Most importantly—she knew that baby Lexus had a life she could never give to her own child.

Quietly, she entered the nursery. No one noticed. No one knew.

She approached Lexus's crib, staring at his innocent face.

"I'm sorry…" she whispered, tears brimming.

"This is the only way my child can live a proper life…"

Swiftly but carefully, she took baby Lexus into her arms and placed her own son, Gavin, in the crib.

A simple switch.

A fleeting decision.

A lie that would change two children's lives forever.

The hospital was silent—only the faint hum of machines and distant footsteps of nurses could be heard. In her arms, Lexus slept peacefully, oblivious to Amanda's choice. She left a diaper in the crib with the name "Lexus," unaware that the baby's outfit bore a tiny tag with the full name: "Lexus Marasigan."

She left the hospital quickly in a black car. At three in the morning, Amanda had already reached a place far from the city, far from the hospital, and far from the baby's parents.

The car stopped in a remote area in the province. Grass and tall plants surrounded her; silence stretched endlessly.

She opened the trunk and took out a large box. Inside, she placed the baby, wrapped in a soft diaper from her own child, surrounded by cloths—ensuring he would survive.

Just enough to live.

"This is where you stay…" she whispered, choking back tears.

"No one can find you… not your parents…"

She placed the box in the middle of the grass, staring at the baby. Part of her wanted to take him back, to hold the child who had no idea of her actions.

But fear won.

She turned and left.

Moments later, in the stillness of the forest, a faint but clear cry pierced the night.

At four in the morning, Mang Alberto, a forty-five-year-old farmer, walked to his field. Used to the sounds of crickets, wind, and animals, he froze when he heard something unusual.

A cry.

"Huh? A child?" he frowned.

Following the sound, he found a box that wiggled with tiny kicks. He opened it to see a baby—crying, trembling, but alive.

"Oh my God!" he gasped.

He didn't hesitate. He picked up the baby and hurried home.

At home, his wife immediately rushed to him.

"Alberto? Why are you back—"

Aling Emelda stopped when she saw the baby in his arms.

"Oh my God! Whose child is this?"

"I found him in the forest," Mang Alberto replied.

"Someone left him…"

Emelda's knees weakened. She carefully took the baby in her arms, tears brimming.

"He's so tiny… barely born…"

In a corner, their two elementary-aged children, Amira and Angelo, watched silently as this tiny stranger became part of their world.

That morning, the couple spoke, heavy words full of doubt.

"Emelda," Mang Alberto said softly, "we barely have enough… the kids are still in school…"

But Emelda couldn't take her eyes off the sleeping baby in her arms.

"Look at him," she whispered.

"His face… it's so pure… there must be a reason he came to us."

Mang Alberto sighed.

"If we left him with someone else, he might not survive properly."

They exchanged a glance. In the quiet of their humble home, a decision was made.

They would adopt him.

Mang Alberto noticed the tag on the baby.

"There's a name… Lexus… Lexus Marasigan," he said. "Seems like he came from a wealthy family."

Emelda paused for a moment.

"Maybe someone is looking for him…" she whispered.

But after a while, Mang Alberto shook his head gently.

"If they're looking… he won't be left in the forest."

They chose to set aside the name. In their small municipality, the baby was officially registered as:

"Alonzo Santiago"

A new name.

A new life.

A hidden truth.
