"Don't touch it—" Hannah started, but it was too late. Toby's fingers brushed the egg's shell, and a sharp jolt of blue lightning shot from it, zapping him square in the hand.
He yelped, yanking his hand back and shaking it, his eyes watering.
"Ow! What the hell?! It shocked me!"
The egg hummed, a low, thrumming sound, and a faint, dark aura curled around it, the gold runes flaring bright red—hostile.
But when Hannah stepped forward, her golden mana thrumming in her palm, and reached out to touch the egg, her fingers brushing the shell, the aura vanished instantly, the red runes fading back to gold, the hum softening into a gentle purr.
The egg went still, calm, like it recognized her, and the black shell warmed under her touch, the gold runes glowing bright and soft, like a heartbeat.
Toby stared at her, dumbfounded. "It didn't shock you. It liked you. What kind of magic is that?"
