Chapter 34 - Chapter 34: Steps Across Distance

Afternoon light filtered through the half-drawn curtains, bathing the room in a warm, muted glow. It was already past lunch, and the estate had settled into the quiet rhythm that followed the midday bustle. Faint sounds echoed distantly from the kitchens, but within his chamber, there was only stillness.

Lin Xuan lay on his back upon the bed, one arm resting loosely at his side. Qing'er was nestled against his chest, still asleep, her breathing slow and even. One of her hands lay lightly over him, fingers curled unconsciously as though anchoring herself to his presence.

He remained motionless so as not to disturb her, but his mind was far from idle.

Before his eyes, invisible to anyone else, the system interface hovered. He still had one final unclaimed reward. His attention moved toward the item section, scanning calmly through rows of artifacts, weapons, and support tools.

He did not rush.

Each item was read carefully, its description evaluated not only for immediate utility but for long-term strategic value.

The first that caught his attention was a cloak.

Item: Voidshade Phantom Cloak

Grade: Sealed (Scaling Artifact)

• Erases wearer's presence when activated• Reduces sound to near-zero• Increases movement speed by 80%• Enhances concealment in darkness• Additional abilities locked

Lin Xuan studied it in silence. An 80% increase in movement speed was substantial. Combined with Silent Severing Edge Art, it would turn him into something nearly untouchable in close combat. The concealment properties alone could allow him to infiltrate restricted areas undetected.

It was tempting.

But he continued browsing.

Another item appeared, and this time, his gaze sharpened.

Item: Shadow Step Bracelet

Grade: Sealed Spatial Artifact

Description:Allows the owner to teleport between predetermined saved locations.

Current Restrictions (Based on Host Cultivation Realm):

• Maximum saved locations: 3

• Teleportation cooldown: Once every 24 hours

• Bracelet is partially sealed

• Additional abilities locked

Special Conditions:

• No distance limitation

• No Qi requirement

• Teleportation cannot be interrupted once activated

Future Potential (Upon Full Unsealing):

• Infinite saved locations

• No cooldown

• Advanced spatial manipulation capabilities

Lin Xuan reread the details carefully.

No distance limitation.

No Qi requirement.

That meant even if his meridians were empty or sealed, he could still escape. Even if he were transported to the other end of the continent, he could return—so long as the cooldown had elapsed.

The 24-hour restriction was significant. Only three saved locations. And the bracelet was sealed, meaning its true potential was still hidden.

Yet its core function alone was invaluable.

He closed the cloak's interface.

Speed could be cultivated. Stealth techniques could be mastered. But unrestricted spatial movement without Qi consumption was far rarer than movement speed enhancement.

Between increased lethality and guaranteed survival, the answer was obvious.

"Claim Shadow Step Bracelet."

The interface flickered.

[Reward Claimed]

A faint spatial ripple formed above his palm. Moments later, a simple black bracelet materialized. It bore no intricate carvings, no visible inscriptions. It looked almost mundane.

But when his fingers brushed against it, he felt the compressed layers of space folded within.

He slid it onto his wrist.

A subtle connection formed instantly.

The Verdant Origin Spirit Blade.

The Yin–Yang Sovereign Convergence Scripture.

And now—the Shadow Step Bracelet.

Weapon.

Cultivation.

Mobility.

The foundation was complete.

His next step was already decided. He would reveal his recovery to his mother. Preferably at dinner, where the conversation could remain controlled. If she did not attend, he would visit her private chamber.

The story had been prepared.

A fortunate encounter.

A dead cultivator's inheritance.

A pill meant to strengthen the foundation.

An unexpected recovery.

Believable.

Convenient.

Untraceable.

His gaze lowered to the bracelet.

It pulsed faintly, awaiting its first saved location.

He moved carefully out of bed, ensuring Qing'er remained undisturbed. She shifted slightly but did not wake. Lin Xuan walked toward the bathing chamber attached to his room.

Standing at the center of the shower area, he activated the bracelet mentally.

[Select Saved Location 1]

He marked it.

The air distorted briefly, almost imperceptibly. A spatial imprint anchored itself to this exact spot.

Done.

There had been no indication that saved waypoints could be altered later. Until proven otherwise, he would assume they were permanent. Two slots remained. He would not waste them carelessly.

When he returned to the main chamber, he sensed movement.

Qing'er stirred.

Her lashes fluttered slowly before her eyes opened. For a brief moment, her gaze was unfocused. Then it settled on his face.

She froze.

A faint blush spread across her cheeks as awareness returned. This was no longer a dream. This was her reality.

Waking beside him.

Lin Xuan noticed the change immediately and stepped closer to the bed. A small smile curved his lips as he sat beside her.

"Awake?" he asked softly.

She nodded, still flustered.

He leaned forward and pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead.

"I have a surprise for you."

Her eyes widened slightly. "A surprise?"

"A stronger cultivation manual," he replied calmly.

"For… me?" she asked, almost incredulous.

"For you."

She sat up immediately, fully awake now. Excitement replaced embarrassment in an instant. There was no doubt in her eyes—only trust.

Lin Xuan began explaining verbally. The Yin–Yang Sovereign Convergence Scripture was powerful, but for Qing'er—whose dormant Celestial Yin Physique had yet to awaken—he adjusted the explanation slightly. He emphasized balance while subtly guiding the circulation toward Yin resonance.

She listened without interruption, absorbing every word.

When he finished, she closed her eyes at once.

"May I begin?" she asked.

He nodded.

She adjusted her posture and started circulating according to his guidance. The reaction was immediate. The surrounding Qi responded more eagerly than before, drawn toward her with greater intensity.

Her aura deepened subtly.

Within minutes, heat coursed through her meridians. A thin layer of impurities began surfacing once more along her skin. Not heavy, but visible.

"This… is much stronger…" she murmured between breaths.

"Yes," Lin Xuan replied calmly.

She continued, trusting his instructions completely. Each breath refined her internal flow further. Her foundation stabilized. Her meridians widened slightly under the pressure of higher-grade circulation.

After nearly an hour, she slowly opened her eyes.

They were brighter.

"If I cultivate this for a day or two," she said softly, awe coloring her voice, "my body will be reborn."

"With minimal impurities," he confirmed. "And greater future potential."

She stared at him for a moment longer.

Then suddenly, she moved.

She leaned forward and wrapped her arms around him tightly, pressing herself against his chest. Her embrace was warm, unrestrained, filled with emotion she did not bother to conceal.

"Thank you," she whispered earnestly.

Lin Xuan blinked once before his expression softened. Slowly, he raised his hand and gently patted her head.

"You are mine," he said quietly. "You do not need to thank me."

Her grip tightened slightly at those words. When she pulled back, her eyes were filled with gratitude, trust, and something far deeper.

Love.

He brushed a strand of hair behind her ear, maintaining that calm, steady composure he always wore.

"Focus on stabilizing your foundation," he reminded her. "Do not rush. True strength requires stability."

She nodded obediently, though her gaze never left him.

Outside, the afternoon sun continued its descent, casting longer shadows across the estate. Within the chamber, Qi flowed steadily.

One had gained dominion over space.

The other had been given a higher path.

And soon, the Lin Clan would learn that the crippled young master was no more.

Only Lin Xuan remained.

Calm.

Prepared.

And already ahead.
