Chapter 42: Two-Face, Don't Look Back, I Am Harvey Dent

"It's him! He's finally here!"

The sudden illumination made Robin instantly realize what was happening.

"What is going on? Who turned on the lights?"

Two-Face raised his pistol, scanning the surroundings with a fierce gaze.

Just then, he felt a slight tickle on his head, as if some light object had landed on top of him.

"What is it?"

He reached up to brush the top of his head and removed the foreign object.

It was a feather.

"How is this possible?"

The "court" Two-Face had set up wasn't outdoors; it was inside a storage room within ACE Chemicals.

This place didn't even have windows. It was a completely enclosed space. Logically, birds couldn't fly in here. So where did this feather come from?

Just as the doubt surfaced, another feather fell from above, drifting right past Two-Face's face.

No, more than one.

Whoosh whoosh whoosh—

In an instant, countless feathers drifted out from nowhere, filling the room until vision was obscured. It was as if a torrential downpour composed of feathers was falling indoors.

Whether controlled intentionally or by pure chance, the falling feathers gradually converged from a scattered state into a single point before everyone's eyes.

In the center of Two-Face's "court," innumerable feathers swirled in mid-air, forming a white tornado.

This unprecedented miraculous phenomenon left Two-Face momentarily stunned.

Snap!

The crisp sound of a finger snap rang out.

Accompanying the sound, the white tornado instantly stopped spinning and fell collectively to the floor.

And in the center of those feathers, a figure appeared out of thin air.

White tuxedo and cape, blue shirt and red tie, a monocle reflecting a mysterious glint, and that confident smile that seemed as if it would never change.

The identity of the arrival was revealed.

"Isn't that—Phantom Thief Kid!?"

The twelve jurors and the Judge stared in shock at Kid, who had emerged from the feathers.

"Wait! Wasn't he caught by Catwoman just now? And he was just lying on the ground over there..."

Confused, they shifted their gazes to the spot where Kid had been unconscious just ten seconds ago.

Immediately, an even more shocking fact appeared before their eyes.

"What? That's impossible!"

The Phantom Thief Kid brought back by Catwoman was still lying there at this very moment!

Could the one on the ground be Kid's dummy?

But would Catwoman really be fooled by a dummy?

And Two-Face checked the unconscious Kid just now too. Neither of them looked like people who couldn't tell a real person from a fake one.

It couldn't be that there are actually two Phantom Thief Kids, right?

"Hey! Phantom Thief Kid, untie me quickly! We can deal with Two-Face together! Afterward, whatever you want to take from him, I'll pretend I didn't see it this time."

While others were shocked by the simultaneous appearance of two Kids, Robin, tightly bound to his chair, shouted to Kid.

"Oh, isn't this Robin? Haven't seen you in a few days. How did you get captured again?"

Hearing the voice, Kid turned to look at Robin, feigning surprise.

However, Robin ignored Kid's teasing and warned him urgently:

"Watch your back!"

Just meters behind Kid, Two-Face had already aimed his gun muzzle at him.

Simultaneously, his other hand tossed the coin upward.

"Don't worry. Today, he won't be able to fire."

Kid turned around unhurriedly, standing confidently in place, waiting for Two-Face to catch the coin.

Sure enough, the face-up side was still the flawless head.

"...When?"

Two-Face clenched the coin in his palm, took a deep breath, and stared directly at Kid.

"When did you tamper with my coin?"

"Interesting, Mr. Dent. You should know I just arrived here. Where would I have found the time to tamper with your coin?" Kid replied with a tone implying I don't know what you're talking about.

"Besides, hasn't that coin been on your person from start to finish? I'm afraid no one could tamper with it except yourself, right?"

This sentence exploded like thunder in Two-Face's mind.

No one except myself could tamper with the coin...

Except myself...

Except me...

No!

There is someone else!

There is one other person!

One other person who could tamper with the coin!

It was you! You actually cheated! You violated the agreement between us!

Two-Face issued an angry interrogation internally.

Good people shouldn't do bad things! And cheating is a very bad thing!

No, I never did that. You should know that very well yourself, another inner voice rebutted.

How would I know what you did while I wasn't paying attention?

Of course you know. Because I am you, and you are me. You know I didn't touch that coin.

Then why does the coin always favor your side?

"Want to know why?"

"Stop cutting the crap! If you know, tell me!"

Suddenly, Two-Face's urging halted abruptly.

Because the voice just now didn't ring from inside his heart.

It came from directly in front of him.

"You! You—"

Two-Face stared blankly ahead at a person he was incredibly familiar with, yet incredibly estranged from.

A person who couldn't possibly appear here and now.

A young man dressed in a prosecutor's suit, his eyes filled with determination and a sense of justice, willing to sacrifice everything for judicial fairness.

That was himself.

The him of the past.

"Harvey... Dent."

Two-Face's eyes blurred for a moment, but he quickly regained clarity.

"No, I am Harvey Dent! You are just a fake impostor!"

"Phantom Thief Kid, don't think you can bluff me by turning into my appearance!"

"Really? You really think I am fake? Then what about Carol Birmingham? Do you think that relationship was fake too?"

Harvey Dent spoke slowly.

"No... impossible. How would you know that name?"

In this moment, the corner of Two-Face's mouth trembled.

"Surprised? Why would anyone know the name of the female colleague you had an affair with over a decade ago? She should have been just a small, insignificant stain on you, the prosecutor, before you became Two-Face."

"Perhaps after such a long time, even you have forgotten her. That should have been a secret buried at the bottom of your heart. So why can a fake Harvey Dent say her name?"

Harvey Dent asked a series of questions.

"Now, do you still think I am fake, Two-Face? No—"

"Me?"

"No... no... no... You can't be me. You are Phantom Thief Kid." Two-Face shook his head repeatedly.

"You say I am Phantom Thief Kid. Then who is Phantom Thief Kid? Who knows whose face is hidden under that top hat and monocle? Maybe he is Harvey Dent."

"Or perhaps, Phantom Thief Kid never existed from the start. There has only ever been you and me—Us."
