Chapter 12 - Mana Bomb Activated

Sarah channeled her pink mana, wand glowing fiercely as she unleashed her attack. "Heartbreaker Beam!" A concentrated laser of sparkling energy shot toward the lizardman, striking its scaly chest with a resounding crack—but the beam scattered harmlessly off the hardened hide, leaving only a faint scorch mark.

"Damn, this monster's got defense from its tough skin!" Sarah shouted, dodging a swipe from its tail that cracked the ground where she'd stood.

Lisa reinforced her barrier, the mint-green dome flickering under the strain. "Andrey already said the weak point's on the underbelly!"

Sarah rolled to the side, avoiding another claw strike that shredded a nearby crate. "Yeah, well, that's easier said than done! Targeting the underbelly is super hard while dodging these attacks!"

Andrey gripped his dual staffs tighter, his eyes locked on the beast's movements through Tactical Scan. "Stay focused, everyone!" He dashed forward without hesitation, weaving between the lizardman's legs to draw its attention. "I'll lure it—make it expose itself so you can aim, Sarah! Lisa, protect me!"

The lizardman roared, swinging wildly at Andrey as he baited it into overextending. Lisa nodded quickly, her wand flashing. "On it! Mint Barrier—double layer!" A reinforced shield snapped around Andrey, absorbing a brutal tail slam that would have crushed him otherwise.

Sarah steadied her wand, waiting for the opening. "Got it—make it flip or something!"

Andrey parried a claw, then struck low at the beast's knee joint, forcing it to stagger and rear up slightly. The underbelly flashed into view—soft, unscaled flesh vulnerable beneath the armored exterior.

"Now!" Andrey yelled, holding his ground as the shield held.

Sarah seized the moment as the lizardman reared up, its underbelly exposed in a vulnerable flash of pale, unarmored flesh. "Take this—Eternal Pink Fury!" she shouted, channeling her mana into a massive heart-shaped blast. The pink explosion slammed directly into the weak spot, tearing through with a sickening rip. The lizardman howled in agony, green blood spraying from the wound as it staggered back, scales cracking and innards briefly visible in the gory mess.

"Uwahh, that's so gore..." Sarah muttered, wrinkling her nose in disgust as she lowered her wand, the pink glow fading slightly. The beast collapsed in a heap, dissolving into shimmering mana particles with a final gurgle.

System: Emergency quest complete! +500 EXP each. Sarah → Level 7! New skill: Fury Chain (link blasts for combo damage). Lisa → Level 5! Passive unlocked: Barrier Recharge (faster shield cooldown). Host Andrey → Level 6! +25 Mana Points. Skill upgrade: Tactical Scan now highlights multiple weak points. Reward: Rare Mana Crystal acquired—boosts team mana pool by 20%!

A glowing blue crystal materialized in Andrey's hand, pulsing with ethereal energy. He pocketed it quickly, catching his breath. "Good work. That was efficient."

Lisa lowered her barrier, staring at the spot where the lizardman had been. "What the heck was that...? A C-rank in a D-zone?"

Before anyone could speculate, the air hummed with unnatural energy. A swirling portal ripped open nearby—not the small rift from before, but a larger, unstable vortex crackling with dark mana.

Andrey's eyes narrowed, Tactical Scan already pinging anomalies. "Looks like something's off here. We need to get out—now."

But it was too late. The portal widened with a thunderous crack, spewing forth a horde of lizardmen—five, then ten, their eyes glowing with the same feral rage as the first. They charged out in a scaly wave, claws scraping the ground, surrounding the team in seconds.

"More incoming!" Sarah yelped, transforming fully as pink sparkles enveloped her. "This isn't a grind anymore—it's a trap!"

Lisa raised her wand, barriers flickering to life. "Starlight Burst—cover fire!"

Andrey spun his staffs, analyzing the swarm. "Formation! Sarah, AoE clears; Lisa, shields on flanks. We break through and evac!" The industrial park had just turned into a battlefield, the anomaly escalating far beyond their D-rank expectations.

Sarah followed Andrey's lead without hesitation, her wand blazing as she fired off a chain of pink blasts. "Fury Chain—go!" The heart-shaped projectiles linked together, slamming into the nearest lizardmen's underbellies as they reared up in aggression. Two of them screeched, wounds opening up with sprays of green ichor, but the horde pressed in tighter, claws scraping against the ground and tails whipping the air.

Lisa joined in, her mint-green mana flaring. "Refreshing Breeze—boost us!" A cool wind swirled around the team, healing minor scratches and speeding up their movements slightly, while she followed with "Starlight Burst!" Sharp green stars pelted another lizardman, chaining to its neighbors and drawing blood from their softer joints.

But the swarm was overwhelming—lizardmen circling from all sides, trapping them in a scaly ring. The team backed into a tight cluster, unable to maneuver freely. Sarah's eyes darted wildly, her breaths coming in panicked gasps as a claw glanced off Lisa's barrier. "Andrey, think of something!!"

Lisa grunted, her wand trembling as she poured more mana into the shield, the mint dome cracking under repeated slams. "Holding... but not for long!"

Andrey parried a incoming strike, his staffs blurring in defense. "I'll figure it out—just hold on!" In the chaos, his mind raced back to the system. 'The shop... there has to be something useful in there.' He thought urgently, pulling up the holographic interface in his vision while dodging a tail swipe. 'Come on, something we can use...'

Sarah blasted another lizardman back but yelped as the horde closed in further. "Hurry up, Andrey!"

Andrey's eyes scanned the shop menu frantically—potions, outfits, skills... then he spotted it: Mana Bomb (C-rank AoE explosive). Description: Detonates a burst of pure mana, lethal to C-level monsters within 10-meter radius. Cost: 500 Mana Points (or equivalent crystals).

"Perfect," he muttered, confirming the purchase with a mental command. The Rare Mana Crystal from the earlier quest shimmered in his inventory, converting partially to cover the cost. A small, glowing orb materialized in his hand, pulsing with volatile energy.

"Everyone, brace—I'm throwing it!" Andrey yelled, hurling the bomb into the thickest part of the swarm. It detonated on impact in a blinding flash of blue-white mana, ripping through the lizardmen with explosive force. Scales shattered, bodies dissolved, and the horde thinned dramatically as half a dozen fell instantly.

The air smelled of ozone and charred hide, the ground littered with smoking craters.

System: Swarm thinned! +300 EXP each. Sarah → Level 8! Passive unlocked: Pink Resilience (reduces damage from C-rank foes). Lisa → Level 6! New skill: Gale Ward (barrier with knockback effect). Host Andrey → Level 7! +30 Mana Points. Inventory update: Mana Bomb stock refreshed (shop discount applied~ ❤️).

Sarah panted, her frilly dress singed at the edges but her wand still humming with residual pink energy. "That... that worked! But there's still more coming—look!"

The portal pulsed angrily, spitting out a few stragglers—three more lizardmen charging through the vortex, claws extended. Lisa reinforced her barrier with a quick chant. "Gale Ward!" The mint shield expanded outward in a gust of wind, slamming into the newcomers and knocking them off-balance.

Andrey analyzed the remaining threats with his upgraded Tactical Scan, highlighting their underbellies and joint weak points in his vision. "Finish them off—Sarah, chain your blasts; Lisa, pin them with stars. I'll clean up close range."

Sarah nodded, firing a rapid Fury Chain that linked between the dazed lizardmen, piercing their exposed spots with explosive hearts. "Got two!" One burst into particles, the other writhed in pain.

Lisa followed up seamlessly. "Starlight Burst—chain mode!" Her green stars zipped through the air, bouncing from one target to the next, shredding scales and finishing off the wounded one.

The last lizardman lunged at Andrey, but he sidestepped fluidly, staffs whirling in a dual strike to its knee and then underbelly. It collapsed with a gurgle, dissolving away. The portal flickered unstably, shrinking with a final crackle before sealing shut.

System: Anomaly resolved! Bonus EXP: +200 each. Team synergy +15 Affection Points (you three are getting so close~ Teehee!). Rare drop: Lizard Scale Armor Fragment (craftable into gear upgrade).

Lisa lowered her wand, catching her breath as her transformation faded. "Whew... that was intense for a 'grind' day. What even caused that? A glitch in the rift?"

Sarah deactivated her mode too, tugging at her tactical jacket with a grimace. "Who knows? But if every quest escalates like this, I'm demanding hazard pay from the system."

Andrey pocketed the new fragment, scanning the area for any lingering threats. "Agreed. We report this to the Association—could be a sign of bigger instabilities. For now, let's evac before anything else pops up."

As they hurried back to the extraction point, the industrial park falling silent behind them, Andrey's phone buzzed with an Association alert: "Anomaly confirmed. Bonus credits deposited. Return to HQ for debrief."

Lisa high-fived Sarah with a shaky grin, her twintails still a bit disheveled from the fight. "That was close, huh? Almost got squished by those scaly freaks."

Sarah returned the high-five weakly, clutching her chest dramatically. "Yeah, that gave me a heart attack. And it seems like we also have to give a reward to Andrey now..."

Lisa blushed a little, her cheeks turning pink as she glanced at Andrey shyly. "Yeah... Please help us out, Andrey."

Andrey cleared his throat awkwardly, his face flushing slightly with embarrassment. "Sorry I have to do this every time we finish a fight..."

Sarah, already heading toward the waiting van with a resigned sigh, waved a hand dismissively. "What can we do? This is the contract, after all. At least our clothes don't disappear like in the beginning."

System: Hehe, that's because it's been upgraded~ So you guys don't have to fuss anymore!

Sarah shot a glare at the empty air where the holographic screen would be. "Shut up, system. I don't need your input."

System: So cold~ A Magical Girl should act cute, you know!

Sarah rolled her eyes, climbing into the van first. "Whatever. Just drive us back to HQ already—I'm starving after all that."

Lisa giggled softly, following her in, while Andrey brought up the rear, still pocketing the Lizard Scale Fragment. The van rumbled to life, carrying the team away from the industrial park. As they settled in for the ride, Andrey pulled up the Association app again, noting the debrief request. "We'll report the anomaly and grab lunch after. Then... maybe check for more quests. Safely."

Lisa leaned back, smirking. "As long as the rewards keep coming—both EXP and, uh, the other kind."

Sarah groaned, burying her face in her hands, but a small smile tugged at her lips.

The system's chime echoed faintly in Andrey's head, promising more "upgrades" ahead.
