Synopsis
In a home where boys are allowed to dream and girls are told to stay silent, fifteen-year-old Annie grows up learning that her hopes mean less simply because she is a girl. Slapped for daring to love freedom, forced to watch her brothers live boldly while she shrinks into the corners of her own life, Annie is expected to accept a future she never chose. But Annie is not weak only unheard. Through secret sketches, stolen moments on a skateboard, and quiet acts of courage, Annie begins to fight back in the only way she knows how: by believing in herself when no one else does. Each small step she takes becomes a ripple, slowly challenging the limits placed on her by family, tradition, and fear. More Than They Believed is a powerful coming-of-age story about resilience, identity, and self-worth. It is a story for anyone who has ever been told they are “too small,” “not enough,” or “not allowed” to dream and chose to keep going anyway.

Chapter 1 - The pain

Silence. That was all there was until a heavy slap landed on my left cheek.

Damn. I tasted my own tears.

My name is Annie. I am fifteen years old. I was slapped this afternoon because I went for a skating class with my brother's skateboard.

I love skating, driving, riding, drawing, and many other things you will learn about as you read my story. But my father believes a girl should only learn how to be a wife and a mother.

I feel safe watching my three brothers do whatever they like while I sit in the corner, staring at them with longing eyes.

My first brother, George, is proud and full of himself. He is my father's pride, so he acts like he is better than everyone else.

My second brother, Brandon, is easy going and fun to be around. If you look closely, he is better than George in many ways but we pretend not to notice so we don't anger George or end up on Dad's bad side.

My third brother Brian, is quiet and keeps to himself. He is my favorite because he always covers for me. He was out of town today, or I wouldn't have received that slap.

I am the last child and the only daughter. You might think that would make me special, but instead it makes me lonely.
