Chapter 17 - Chapter 17

The Shadow of the Ansha — A Dangerous Presence

The warmth between them had barely settled when it was torn apart.

An unfamiliar pressure crept into the air, subtle at first, almost imperceptible—yet sharp enough to make the hairs on the back of Xiao Yan's neck rise all at once. The atmosphere shifted, growing heavier, colder, as though something unseen had entered the space and claimed it.

From the shadows, the Ansha emerged.

He did not rush. He did not announce himself. He simply stepped forward, silent and imposing, his blue robe unmoving despite the sudden turbulence in the air. His presence alone was enough to suffocate the surroundings—chilling, overwhelming, yet strangely magnetic, drawing the eye even as instinct screamed to flee.

Xiao Yan noticed first.

His body reacted before his mind could fully process it, every instinct roaring danger. His grip on Mi-An loosened as his gaze snapped toward the darkness. "Someone's here," he muttered, pulling back slightly.

Mi-An stiffened immediately. The softness from moments before vanished, replaced by sharp alertness. She followed his gaze, her breathing slowing as her body prepared for the worst.

They stood quietly, every muscle coiled tight, the air between them tense and brittle. Xiao Yan felt his newly awakened power stirring beneath his skin, restless, burning, desperate for release. His heart pounded violently in his chest.

Maybe I can strike… maybe I can hurt him.

The thought ignited something reckless inside him.

Before reason could catch up, he lunged forward.

He did not even reach halfway.

The Ansha extended a single hand—slow, effortless—and Xiao Yan felt his entire body seize. It was as if invisible chains wrapped around him, crushing and absolute. The force slammed him downward, and he crashed hard against the stone floor. Pain exploded through his skull as his head struck the ground, the impact leaving him dazed and breathless.

"Xiao Yan!" Mi-An rushed to his side without hesitation.

The Ansha advanced, each step deliberate, measured, unhurried. His gaze never left them, calm and unblinking, as though the struggle before him was nothing more than mild amusement.

Mi-An tried to act.

Glowing runes flared to life around her hands as she began to cast a spell, her energy surging outward in defiance. But before the magic could fully form, the Ansha lifted his hand once more. With a simple gesture, the runes shattered, dispersing into nothingness as though they had never existed.

"Trying to escape?" the Ansha asked.

A dangerous smile curved across his face, slow and deliberate.

Mi-An stepped in front of Xiao Yan, placing herself between him and the looming figure. Her stance was firm despite the fear clawing at her chest. Behind her, Xiao Yan groaned, struggling against the invisible restraint that still held him, his limbs refusing to respond no matter how hard he tried.

"You won't leave here alive!" Xiao Yan shouted.

His voice trembled, strained by pain and defiance, but it did not break.

The Ansha's eyes gleamed with unmistakable amusement. "You should fear me," he replied calmly. "Have you forgotten?"

Thunder rolled across the sky, deep and violent. The ground trembled beneath them as the Ansha's aura surged outward unchecked. Trees snapped under the pressure, debris lifting into the air as the environment itself warped around his presence. It felt as though the entire sect stood on the brink of collapse, balanced precariously beneath his power.

He stood there—calm, terrifying—radiating an energy that seemed capable of leveling everything in existence.

Then, just as suddenly, he turned away.

"I'll make an appearance soon," he called over his shoulder, his voice carrying effortlessly through the chaos. "Wait for me."

And with that, he vanished.

The crushing pressure lifted instantly, leaving behind an eerie, suffocating silence. The thunder faded, debris settled, and the world seemed to exhale all at once.

Mi-An exhaled shakily and reached back, taking Xiao Yan's hand. Without wasting time, she guided him toward a glowing portal that had opened nearby. The light pulsed softly, promising escape.

Together, they leapt through it.

The pull of the unknown wrapped around them, fear giving way to a fragile sense of relief as the portal swallowed them whole—leaving behind the echo of the Ansha's presence, and the certainty that this encounter was far from the last.
