Chapter 9 - Chapter 8: Baptism in Blood

The first spirit beast reached the fortress walls as twilight deepened into night. It was a Razor-Mane Wolf, its fur bristling with blade-like quills that gleamed in the dimming light. Qi Refining Fourth Layer, moving with predatory grace across the broken plateau.

It didn't hesitate. The moment it saw the fortress, territorial instinct took over. This was its hunting ground, and the sudden appearance of walls and buildings was an intrusion that demanded response.

The wolf charged the eastern wall with a howl that echoed across the plateau.

One of Lin Feng's skeletal beasts—a reanimated Stone Lizard positioned on that section of wall—responded immediately. It launched itself from the battlements, landing with bone-rattling impact on the charging wolf.

The two creatures collided in a savage fury of fang and claw. The wolf's quills raked across the skeletal lizard's reinforced bones, scoring deep gouges but not breaking through. The undead beast's jaws clamped on the wolf's neck, crushing down with supernatural strength.

The Razor-Mane Wolf thrashed and struggled, its spiritual energy flaring as it tried to break free. But undead didn't tire, didn't feel pain, didn't stop. The skeletal lizard held on with mechanical persistence until the wolf's struggles weakened, then ceased.

[Razor-Mane Wolf defeated][Experience distributed to garrison][Skeletal Lizard sustained moderate damage - will regenerate with time]

But the wolf had only been the first.

More spirit beasts emerged from the darkening landscape. A pack of Stone-Backed Boars came from the south, their rocky hides gleaming with spiritual energy. From the north, a murder of Iron-Feathered Crows descended, their metallic plumage creating an eerie rattling sound as they flew.

And from the west, something larger. Much larger.

Lin Feng's spiritual sense identified it even before it came into view: a Black Iron Bear. Not like the one he'd fought on the road to Azure Peak City—this one was bigger, older, its spiritual pressure indicating Qi Refining Eighth Layer at minimum.

Big threat, Yue's thought carried urgency. Very dangerous.

"I see it," Lin Feng murmured, his mind already working through tactical options.

The fortress's defensive formations activated automatically as the spirit beasts entered their range. Spiritual energy barriers shimmered into visibility along the walls, and formation arrays began gathering power for counterattacks.

But formations alone wouldn't be enough. The bear was too powerful, and the sheer number of attacking beasts could overwhelm the defenses through attrition.

Lin Feng needed to be smart about this.

He opened a mental connection to all his skeletal beasts through the grimoire. The undead constructs weren't intelligent, but they could follow tactical commands. He positioned them strategically: three on the walls to handle the flying Iron-Feathered Crows and support the formations, three at ground level near the gate to intercept the Stone-Backed Boars, and one—the strongest, reanimated from a Shadow Panther he'd killed on the third day—held in reserve.

"Yue," Lin Feng said aloud, "you're with me. We're taking the bear."

Understood. Together.

Lin Feng descended from the keep and took position on the battlements above the main gate. From here, he had a clear view of the approaching threats and could direct the defense while engaging the most dangerous enemy himself.

The Stone-Backed Boars hit first, charging the gate with the momentum of battering rams. The fortress's formations met them with barriers of solidified spiritual energy, but the boars' rocky hides were designed for exactly this kind of impact. They slammed into the barriers repeatedly, cracks beginning to spiderweb across the glowing surfaces.

Lin Feng's three ground-level skeletal beasts engaged them directly. The reanimated boars—ironically fighting their living counterparts—met the charge head-on. Bone collided with stone in impacts that shook the ground. The living boars had the advantage of full spiritual energy and intact muscle, but the undead had the advantage of fearlessness and the inability to tire.

It would be a close fight.

The Iron-Feathered Crows attacked the walls, diving at the formations and the skeletal beasts positioned there. Their metallic feathers could cut through spiritual energy barriers given enough impacts, and they fought with coordinated precision that suggested more intelligence than common spirit beasts.

But the skeletal beasts on the walls were equipped for aerial threats. The reanimated Mist Serpent could project waves of corrupted spiritual energy that disrupted flight, sending crows tumbling from the sky. The skeletal hawks—formerly alive, now bound in death—could engage directly in aerial combat.

The crows and the undead exchanged attacks in a deadly dance above the fortress walls, both sides taking casualties.

And through it all, the Black Iron Bear advanced.

It moved with surprising speed for something so massive, each step covering dozens of feet. Its eyes glowed with spiritual energy that spoke of intelligence far beyond normal spirit beasts. This was an old creature, one that had survived decades in the Shattered Peaks by being stronger and smarter than anything else.

It looked at the fortress, at the defending skeletal beasts, at Lin Feng standing on the battlements.

And it roared—a sound that shook the very air, infused with enough spiritual pressure to make Lin Feng's bones ache.

[Warning: Black Iron Bear (Qi Refining 8th Layer - Peak) approaching][Threat Level: Extreme][This enemy is four layers above Host cultivation - direct combat not recommended]

Lin Feng ignored the system's warning. Direct combat might not be recommended, but he didn't have many other options. The fortress's formations could slow the bear, but they couldn't stop it. His skeletal beasts were tied up with other threats. It was down to him and Yue to handle the most dangerous enemy.

He'd faced worse odds in Old Ghost's training. The old instructor had regularly pitted him against opponents far beyond his cultivation level.

Of course, in training, death was temporary. Here, it would be permanent.

Lin Feng pushed the thought aside and focused on the fight ahead.

The bear reached the fortress's outer defensive perimeter—a ring of formation arrays designed to weaken and slow attackers. Spiritual energy lanced out in precise strikes, targeting the bear's eyes, joints, and other vulnerable points.

The bear roared again and simply powered through. Its spiritual energy formed a protective shell that absorbed the formation attacks, and its massive strength let it barrel forward despite the impediments.

It reached the wall in seconds.

One massive paw slammed into the fortress's barrier, and the entire section shuddered. Formation arrays flickered and sparked. The bear struck again, and cracks appeared in the spiritual energy construct.

"Now!" Lin Feng commanded.

He and Yue moved as one, their perfect bond allowing for coordination that required no words. Lin Feng vaulted from the battlements, his sword drawn and glowing with channeled spiritual energy. Yue used Spirit Step to appear directly on the bear's back, her jaws seeking the vulnerable point at the base of the skull.

The bear twisted with shocking speed, dislodging Yue before her attack could land. Its paw swatted at the spirit wolf, who phased incorporeal at the last instant, the massive limb passing harmlessly through her misty form.

Lin Feng landed and immediately engaged, his sword forms flowing with the precision Old Ghost had drilled into him. Form One opened with a rising slash aimed at the bear's exposed belly. The blade met the creature's spiritual energy shell and struggled to penetrate.

Lin Feng enhanced his strike with a burst of Qi, and the sword finally bit through. Not deep—the bear's natural defenses were formidable—but enough to draw blood.

The bear's retaliation was immediate and overwhelming. It lunged at Lin Feng with its full weight, jaws wide enough to swallow him whole.

Lin Feng used Form Seven—the deceptive backhand that created perfect positioning for evasion. He twisted aside at the last possible moment, the bear's teeth snapping shut on empty air inches from his body.

But the bear wasn't done. Its shoulder caught Lin Feng as it passed, sending him flying. He hit the ground hard, pain exploding through his ribs. Only the defensive formations in his robes prevented the impact from breaking bones.

[Physical Damage: Moderate][Estimated: Bruised ribs, minor internal bleeding]

Yue attacked while the bear was focused on Lin Feng, her Resonance Strike ability activating. Her spiritual energy synchronized with Lin Feng's, and when her jaws clamped on the bear's hind leg, the enhanced damage actually penetrated the creature's defenses.

The bear howled in pain and rage, spinning to engage this new threat. Its paw came down like a hammer, but Yue was already gone, Spirit Stepping to a new position.

This was how they had to fight—hit and run, never giving the bear a chance to bring its full power to bear against either of them. Wear it down through accumulated wounds rather than trying for a decisive strike.

Lin Feng rolled to his feet and rejoined the battle. His ribs ached with every breath, but Old Ghost's training had taught him to fight through worse pain. Form Three flowed into Form Six, his sword becoming a blur of precise strikes targeting the bear's wounded leg.

The battle became a deadly dance. Lin Feng and Yue circled the massive beast, attacking in coordinated strikes whenever an opening appeared. The bear retaliated with overwhelming force, but its size and power were also liabilities—it couldn't catch the smaller, faster opponents.

But Lin Feng was tiring. Each enhancement of his sword drained spiritual energy. Each impact jarred his injured ribs. And the bear, despite its wounds, showed no signs of weakening.

They needed to end this soon.

Yue, Lin Feng projected through their bond, I'm going to create an opening. When I do, go for its throat with everything you have.

Risky, Yue's response carried concern. You'll be exposed.

I know. Trust me.

Always.

Lin Feng changed his tactics. Instead of evading the bear's attacks, he began meeting them directly. When the bear's paw came down, he raised his sword to block—not a full defense, just enough to deflect the strike slightly.

The impact drove him to his knees. His sword screamed with the stress. But he held.

The bear, encouraged by finally connecting with an attack, pressed forward. It reared up on its hind legs, preparing to bring both massive paws down in a crushing blow that would flatten Lin Feng completely.

It was the opening he'd been waiting for.

Lin Feng poured every scrap of remaining spiritual energy into his sword. The blade blazed with blue-white light, spiritual formations inscribed on its surface activating all at once. He thrust upward with everything he had, aiming for the bear's exposed chest.

The sword punched through the spiritual energy shell, through the thick hide, between ribs, searching for the heart.

At the same moment, Yue materialized on the bear's back using Spirit Step. Her jaws closed on the back of the creature's neck, her spiritual energy synchronized with Lin Feng's in perfect Resonance.

The combined attack was devastating. Lin Feng's sword found the heart. Yue's teeth severed the spine.

The Black Iron Bear's roar cut off mid-sound. Its massive body stiffened, then toppled like a falling tree.

Lin Feng barely managed to roll aside before tons of spirit beast crashed to the ground where he'd been standing.

[Black Iron Bear (Qi Refining 8th Layer - Peak) defeated][Reward: 200 SP, High-Grade Beast Core, Black Iron Bear Hide, Concentrated Beast Essence][Bonus: +100 SP for defeating enemy four layers above cultivation][Experience gained: Significant]

Lin Feng lay on the ground, gasping for breath. His spiritual energy was completely depleted. His ribs felt like fire. But he was alive.

Victory, Yue's thought was tired but triumphant. Strong enemy defeated. Pack proves worthy.

"We... did it," Lin Feng managed between gasps.

But there was no time to rest. The battle around the fortress continued. He could hear the sounds of combat from the walls—his skeletal beasts still fighting the remaining spirit beasts.

Lin Feng forced himself to his feet. He retrieved his sword from the bear's corpse, noting that the blade had survived the enhanced strike without breaking. Quality craftsmanship, worth every spirit stone.

He staggered back toward the fortress, Yue limping beside him. The spirit wolf's form flickered—she'd exhausted much of her spiritual energy in the fight as well.

The scene at the walls was chaotic but manageable. The Stone-Backed Boars had been driven off, with two dead and the rest fled back into the darkness. The Iron-Feathered Crows had taken heavy casualties and were retreating as well.

His skeletal beasts had survived, though several were heavily damaged. One of the reanimated boars had lost a leg and was barely functional. The skeletal hawks were missing sections of their wing bones.

But they'd held. The fortress had survived its first real test.

Lin Feng surveyed the battlefield from the walls. Dead spirit beasts littered the ground around the fortress—seventeen in total, ranging from Qi Refining Third Layer to the mighty bear at Eighth.

More importantly, the fortress's presence had been established. Any other spirit beasts in the area would now know that this territory was defended, that attacking carried a cost.

Some would still come—the strongest, most territorial ones. But the constant waves would stop. They'd learned.

[Quest Complete: First Blood][Rewards: 300 SP, Garrison morale increased (undead unaffected), Fortress reputation established]

[New Quest: Consolidation]Objective: Survive for 7 days while establishing control over surrounding territoryRewards: Territory officially recognized by system, additional building slots unlocked, resource generation increased

Lin Feng made his way to the fortress's cultivation chamber and collapsed onto a meditation mat. He desperately needed to restore his spiritual energy, but more than that, he needed to assess his situation.

Current status:

Spiritual energy: 5% (critically depleted) Physical condition: Injured but stable Garrison: 7 skeletal beasts (5 functional, 2 heavily damaged) Resources gained: Multiple beast cores, hides, and essence Summoning Points: 2,110 (including rewards and daily generation)

The battle had been costly but successful. And the rewards were substantial—enough summoning points to significantly expand his garrison.

But first, he needed to recover. Lin Feng entered the Spirit Gathering Pagoda's pocket dimension, where the concentrated spiritual energy would help him heal and restore his power faster.

The cultivation chamber in the pagoda was more comfortable than the one in the fortress, and the spiritual energy was purer. Lin Feng settled in and began cycling the Fortress Foundation Scripture, drawing in Qi to replenish his depleted reserves.

The technique felt different now that he actually had a fortress. The spiritual connection between him and Ironwall Bastion resonated with each cycle of energy, creating a feedback loop that enhanced his cultivation speed.

[Cultivation enhanced by established fortress][Current efficiency: +350% due to fortress, spiritual vein tap, and Spirit Gathering Pagoda combined effects]

What would normally take hours took less than one. Lin Feng's spiritual energy reserves refilled at an astonishing rate, and as they did, he could feel his body healing from the accumulated damage. The bruised ribs mended, the internal bleeding stopped, the muscle strain eased.

This was the power of the Fortress Foundation Scripture in action—the symbiotic relationship between cultivator and domain, each one strengthening the other.

When Lin Feng emerged from cultivation several hours later, he felt renewed. Not at full strength—true healing would take days—but functional. Ready to continue.

Yue had recovered as well, her misty form solid and stable once more. Through their bond, Lin Feng could feel her contentment. They'd fought together, survived together, proven themselves together.

Their bond had grown even stronger.

[Bond Strength with Yue: 100% - Perfect Synchronization][Note: Bond strength cannot increase beyond 100%, but quality continues to improve through shared experiences]

Lin Feng left the pagoda and began the work of securing his new territory. The first priority was harvesting resources from the dead spirit beasts. Beast cores, hides, bones, essence—all of it had value, either for crafting or for converting into summoning points.

He spent the morning methodically processing the corpses. The system helped, providing guidance on optimal harvesting techniques and which parts were most valuable.

[Resources Harvested:]

17 Beast Cores (various grades) Multiple hides and bones 5 units of Concentrated Beast Essence Various spirit beast materials

[Total Value: Approximately 800 spirit stones or 400 SP if converted]

Lin Feng chose to keep the physical materials for now rather than converting them to points. The beast cores could be used for cultivation or sold. The essence could enhance future summons. The hides and bones could be crafted into equipment or used in formations.

His skeletal beasts didn't need rest, so he set them to patrol duty around the fortress while he worked on repairs and upgrades. Two of the damaged undead needed significant spiritual energy infusions to regenerate their bone structure—a process that cost him fifty spirit stones but was cheaper than summoning replacements.

By midday, the fortress was secure and Lin Feng could turn his attention to expansion. He had over two thousand summoning points and a wealth of harvested materials. Time to strengthen his garrison.

The question was how. The Legions of the Fallen grimoire offered one path—create more undead using the beast corpses he'd harvested. The system offered another—spend points to summon different types of units.

Or he could combine approaches, using both methods to create a diverse force.

Lin Feng decided on the combined approach. Relying on a single type of unit created vulnerabilities. Diversity meant adaptability.

He opened the system's unit catalog, looking at what he could afford with his current points. The options were extensive, but a few stood out:

[Stone Guardian - Spirit Construct]Cost: 200 SPPower Level: Qi Refining 5th Layer equivalentAbilities: Unyielding, Rock Armor, Tremor StrikeNotes: Excellent defense, slow movement, requires no maintenance

[Spectral Soldier - Undead Legion]Cost: 150 SP per unitPower Level: Qi Refining 4th Layer equivalentAbilities: Incorporeal, Fear Aura, Life DrainNotes: Weak to light/holy techniques, no morale issues, requires periodic death energy feeding

[Elemental Servant (Flame) - Elemental Type]Cost: 100 SP per unitPower Level: Qi Refining 3rd Layer equivalentAbilities: Immolation, Flight, Ranged fire attacksNotes: High damage output, unstable (may dissipate), requires ambient fire energy or regular spiritual energy feeding

Lin Feng did the math. With 2,110 points, he could create:

2 Stone Guardians (400 SP) for main defense 6 Spectral Soldiers (900 SP) for harassment and psychological warfare 8 Flame Elementals (800 SP) for ranged support and area denial

That would leave him with just 10 SP, but would give him a total garrison of:

7 skeletal beasts 2 Stone Guardians 6 Spectral Soldiers 8 Flame Elementals Total: 23 units

A respectable force for a new fortress.

Lin Feng began the summoning process. The Stone Guardians came first. These were system summons rather than grimoire creations, so the process was different—cleaner, less unsettling. He selected the summon option and designated positions for them to materialize.

Light coalesced in the fortress courtyard, and two massive figures took form. They were humanoid but clearly not human—eight feet tall, carved from living stone, their bodies inscribed with formation arrays that pulsed with spiritual energy. Each carried an enormous shield and a club that looked like it could shatter boulders.

They turned toward Lin Feng and bowed, their movements surprisingly graceful despite their size.

[2x Stone Guardians summoned successfully][Loyalty: Absolute (system-summoned units cannot betray)][Combat ready]

The Spectral Soldiers were next. Six summons meant six separate activation sequences. One by one, ghostly figures materialized—translucent humanoid shapes dressed in ancient armor, their faces hidden behind ethereal helms. They carried spectral weapons that seemed to shift between solid and incorporeal.

Each one radiated an aura of cold dread that made even Lin Feng uncomfortable. He could only imagine what effect they'd have on mortal enemies.

[6x Spectral Soldiers summoned successfully][Warning: Spectral units emit passive fear effect - may cause panic in weak-willed opponents][Death energy requirement: 50 spirit stones per week for full squad, or equivalent death energy from kills]

Finally, the Flame Elementals. Eight miniature infernos took shape in the courtyard—each one a vaguely humanoid mass of fire and heat, floating a few feet above the ground. They crackled and sparked, radiating warmth that contrasted sharply with the Spectral Soldiers' cold presence.

[8x Flame Elementals summoned successfully][Warning: Fire elementals are unstable - 10% chance of dissipation per day without proper energy feeding][Energy requirement: 25 spirit stones per week for full squad, or access to natural fire sources]

Lin Feng stood in his fortress courtyard, surrounded by his newly summoned garrison. Twenty-three units in total—a mixed force of undead, constructs, and elementals. Not enough to threaten a major sect, but more than enough to defend his territory against most threats.

He organized them into squads:

Wall Defense: Stone Guardians + Skeletal Beasts (ranged) Mobile Strike Force: Spectral Soldiers + Yue Fire Support: Flame Elementals Reserve: Remaining skeletal beasts

It was a functional structure that played to each unit type's strengths. The Stone Guardians would anchor defensive positions. The Spectral Soldiers would harass and demoralize enemies. The Flame Elementals would provide ranged damage and area control.

And Yue, bonded to him with perfect synchronization, would serve as his personal combat companion and the elite strike force.

[Garrison organized successfully][Current Military Strength: Low-to-Moderate][Defensive Capability: Moderate][Offensive Capability: Low][Recommendation: Continue expanding forces and establishing resource production]

Lin Feng spent the rest of the day organizing his fortress. He set patrol routes for different units, established rotation schedules (even though most didn't tire), and created tactical response plans for various threat scenarios.

It was work he'd never done before—commanding troops, thinking strategically about defense and territory control. But the Fortress Foundation Scripture seemed to guide his instincts, and the knowledge Shen Wu had implanted helped fill in gaps.

By evening, Ironwall Bastion was transformed from an empty shell into a functioning military installation. Units patrolled the walls. The command center's tactical arrays displayed real-time positions of all forces. The warehouse was organized with harvested materials sorted by type and value.

Lin Feng stood on the keep's balcony, looking out over his domain. The Shattered Peaks stretched in every direction, chaotic and dangerous. But here, in this small corner of that chaos, he'd created order. Built something that would endure.

It was a start. Just a start. But it was his.

[Quest Progress: Consolidation - Day 1/7 complete]

As night fell over the Shattered Peaks, Lin Feng returned to the cultivation chamber. Tomorrow would bring new challenges—more spirit beasts, possibly rogue cultivators investigating the fortress, the constant need for resources and growth.

But tonight, he allowed himself a moment of satisfaction.

He'd survived his first day as a fortress lord.

Six more days to officially claim this territory.

And then... then the real work would begin.

Lin Feng settled into meditation, cycling spiritual energy while Yue kept watch.

The Architect's heir had taken his first real step toward building an empire.

And he had no intention of stopping.
