CHAPTER 30The Choice

They took the ledger to Fen and Tao. The elders listened in grim silence as Leo laid out the truth.

When he finished, Fen closed her eyes. "We knew. Not the details, but we knew there was blood in the foundation."

"Why didn't you ever tell me?" Leo asked, his voice tight.

"Because some truths destroy more than they heal," Tao said, his old voice trembling. "Your father thought exposing it would bring justice. Instead, it brought him a grave."

"And now a Lǐng survivor is hunting us," Luna said. "Using my brother. Using our marriage. They want the families to tear each other apart."

"Then we give them what they want," Fen said, opening her eyes. "Publicly."

Leo frowned. "What?"

"We stage a fracture. A very public, very dramatic split between the Wǎngshās and Xiānyǔs. We draw the Archivist out into the open." Fen looked at Luna. "It will require sacrifice. From both of you."

"What kind of sacrifice?" Luna asked.

"You will separate. Publicly. Leo will accuse your family of treachery. You will return to the Xiānyǔ estate in disgrace." Fen's gaze was pitiless. "The Archivist will see weakness and strike. And we will be waiting."

Luna's heart clenched. She looked at Leo. He was staring at his grandmother, his expression unreadable.

"No," he said finally. "I won't use her as bait."

"It's not your choice," Tao said. "It's the only way to protect the family."

"Then I choose her over the family." The words hung in the air, shocking in their simplicity.

Fen's eyes narrowed. "You would risk everything for her?"

"I'm not risking everything. I'm choosing what matters." He took Luna's hand. "We find another way."

Luna squeezed his fingers, warmth blooming in her chest despite the cold fear. "There is another way."

All eyes turned to her.

"We don't stage a fracture," she said. "We stage a trial. We invite all four families. We present the evidence of the Lǐng family's destruction. We force a confession. And we offer restitution."

"They'll never agree," Ming said.

"They will if the alternative is war with a ghost who knows all their secrets." Luna looked at the ledger. "The Archivist wants justice. So we give it to them. Publicly. On our terms."

Silence filled the room.

Then Fen smiled—a true smile, rare and chilling. "You're smarter than I thought, child." She stood. "Prepare the evidence. I'll call the council. We meet in three days."

As the elders left, Leo pulled Luna close. "That was dangerous."

"So is letting a ghost haunt us forever." She rested her head against his chest. "Together?"

"Together," he whispered into her hair.

They stood like that for a long time, two people holding each other in the heart of a gathering storm.

The game had changed. They were no longer just playing defense.

They were writing new rules.

And for the first time, Luna felt not like a piece on the board, but like a player.

A dangerous one.
