Chapter 21 - 21: Husk (1)

A stranger wandered aimlessly across a massive rock, unable to remember for how long. The stranger could not think straight, and all He did was walk. He had the vaguest of memories of how He ended up here: falling from the sky. Perhaps from one of those floating islands, or perhaps He was pushed off one of the airships that occasionally passed by in the distance. Either way, one thing was clear. The incredible fall did not kill Him.

The stranger looked at His hands, and His skin was flaking off.

Ah, yes. He remembered now. Given enough time, He'd always forget. Because like His body, His mind was deteriorating too. And eventually, He'd always behold His hands again and His heart would skip a beat every single time.

After enough aimless wandering, the stranger stumbled upon a massive hole in the rock. Peering in, He saw water at the bottom. The stranger was in no rush to go anywhere, so He took a step forward and dropped himself down into the hole.

The next thing He felt was the impact of His body on the still water. The stranger did not take care to dive with His head down, making for a painful landing for any normal person, but not for Him. Any pain He felt from things like these just added to the noise His body was already making.

As He sunk to the bottom, the stranger exhaled the last bit of air from His lungs, just to see if He'd drown. But deep inside, He already knew the answer. His body screamed at Him for this, like a normal human body would. But it was a false alarm, of which he had many. Countless signals coming from all over his body, telling His brain something was wrong. But the man felt like He could never die, it could only get worse.

In addition to the constant physical pain, the stranger believed His body's deterioration had started causing excessive hormone production. Leading to constant torrents of strange emotions going through His body with no end, causing Him to behave irrationally.

As He sunk, He looked at His hands once more and wondered what would happen if His body continued to deteriorate down to nothing. Were His pain receptors telling the truth after all? What did they even want Him to do about it?

Eventually, the light from the surface disappeared and the stranger lost His train of thought, wondering how long He'd been sinking for. His inability to remember jumping into the water made Him wonder if it'd been years. Or perhaps He'd spent His entire life surrounded by this liquid darkness.

After some time, which the stranger did not know, He saw the surface coming His way again. This disappointed Him somewhat. Did He jump in and float down to a point so deep there was only darkness, just to come back up? He waited patiently as the surface slowly reached Him, like He was being pulled up by some divine force that wanted Him to continue His aimless journey elsewhere.

When His head and shoulders emerged from the water, His ascent slowed down, and He was granted time to look. A massive dark space with no natural light except for these strange, floating orbs of light. The orbs moved like they were living things, and some of them hovered above the water. Others hovered close enough to the edge of the dark space to reveal they were cavern walls. When one came close enough to the stranger, He looked down at the water by His waist, and He could see His own reflection.

A surprising physique, to say the least. In a way, He found Himself to be quite handsome. The stranger had pointy, elf-like ears and long, beautiful hair. He looked young and healthy, besides the fact that, like his hands, the skin on His face was flaking off. He had a kind of beauty to Him, even He Himself could tell. This was in stark contrast to His old and dirty clothes that made Him look homeless.

The stranger's attention went to the water level, which was still dropping. Whatever pulled Him up to the surface was now pulling Him out of the water. And the more of His body left the water, the faster He rose. When His feet left the water, the stranger's body started accelerating towards the ceiling like gravity had been reversed. His head was the first thing to make impact, and once more, he lost all recollection of how he came here.
