Kai hadn't slept in two days. His mind was consumed by the Summit of Redemption, and the weight of his responsibilities. Jerry had told him to take the day off, but Kai couldn't shake off the feeling of impending doom.
He tossed the book aside and headed to the kitchen. The near-empty food cabinet yielded a plain sandwich and a glass of water. Back on the couch, he stared at the ticking clock, wishing for time to stop.
A voice outside broke the silence. "I'm looking for a Kai." Kai's heart skipped a beat. Was it the government? Had they finally come for him? But the voice softened. "Kai, you home? You promised we'd hang out today."
Kai's anxiety eased. It was just Bon. "Coming!" he shouted, leaping off the couch.
Bon stood outside, grinning mischievously. "I thought you got kidnapped. I was about to use my intense magical-sensing powers to track you down."
Kai rolled his eyes. "Your kindness is unmatched, great mage Bon."
Bon frowned dramatically. "Was that sarcasm? You dare speak to your commander like that, young mage?"
As they bantered, Kai's worries began to fade. Bon's presence was a welcome distraction.
"How'd you get your parents to let you come over?" Kai asked.
"They're on another business trip. Back by the weekend," Bon replied, dropping his bag on the couch.
Bon's parents were always traveling, leaving him alone. Kai knew it wasn't easy, but Bon never complained.
"Did you bring snacks?" Kai asked hopefully.
Bon pulled out an assortment of candy, snack bars, and treats. "Better," he said with a grin.
Kai's eyes widened as Bon produced a holocard. "A holocard? Where did you get that?"
"End-of-term gift. I aced my scores," Bon said casually.
The holocard shimmered to life, displaying swirling mana particles. Kai stared in awe. "This is incredible."
Bon flipped through the interface, finally finding the movie they wanted to watch. "Monsters" filled the screen, and Kai forgot his troubles.
But the peace was short-lived. A knock at the door shattered the calm. Kai's heart sank as he opened it to reveal Kevin, looking rough.
"Kevin?" Kai blurted out.
Kevin's eyes scanned the RV before settling on Bon. "And who are you?" he asked, his tone cold.
"I'm Bon. Kai's friend," Bon replied, his voice shaking slightly.
Kevin's gaze lingered on Bon before turning to Kai. "We need to talk, kid. Privately."
Bon hesitated, sensing the tension. "I'll head home," he said quietly.
As Bon left, Kevin dropped onto the couch, his presence filling the small space. "Jerry sent me with new instructions. And trust me, kid, you'
re not gonna like 'em."
