Chapter 1 - Prologue

The air was sharp, cutting through the hair of the boy standing atop the hill. His hair was jet black, curls billowing in the wind. His eyes were a deep black, hollowed out from the inside. His expression was cold, yet not unwelcoming, simply an expression devoid of any strong emotions.

His eyes fell to his side, looking at the girl sitting on the bench beside him. Her blonde hair was bright, reflecting the bright light from the sky.

"Amir," The girl's voice was sweet like honey, rolling from her lips graciously. Amir turned his full attention to the girl, lowering his eyes to the ground in respect. "Have you ever wished for something greater?" She asked, her tone distant, carrying a silent prayer, a silent emotion she need not convey.

"I," he hesitated, watching his words as they came. "If there were one thing I'd want more in the world, it'd be to be away from here. I want to roam, I want to see the world, untethered to this land." Amir's voice held a complex array of emotions, his tone held his usual uncertainty, yet in his eyes there was a clear confidence in his statement.

Amir wanted to explore. That alone was his dream. To see the end of the world, to come to a place where he need not hide. Amir saw the world through a unique look, he saw the hierarchy, he saw the past, and he turned away from it all. He tried, Amir tried, he tried to escape. Yet, he was infinitely trapped alongside this girl, following her every move.

The look on the girl's face seemed knowing, yet saddened all the same.

"I knew you would answer like that." Her voice was quiet, a silence filling the air between the two. The girl breathed in heavily, her eyes coming to a close, seemingly steadying herself.

"Amir, tell me, if given the opportunity, would you leave?" Her words were easily mistaken, yet Amir instantly understood the intent.

He knew this girl better than she knew herself, Amara, the girl he'd been tethered to his whole life. The person Amir had known, had seen, had followed. The person who'd been there at his lowest, and had torn him from his own reality. She'd both been a blessing and curse to him. Yet, he felt no bigger wish than to escape. Amir wanted to run, to feel the air on his face, to let his arms fly freely. He wanted to live, live outside his cage, in a world more vast than his mind could even imagine.

"Yes, yes I would."
