Anna had been pacing for the past ten minutes or so now. She glanced at her phone, a little too often, worried about what the man could be doing to the Senator. It did occur to her to take the elevator and bridge the gap that separated them but accessing Senator Doningman's office wasn't for anyone and she couldn't stand the humiliation should she be sent back for not having an appointment.
Sullivan didn't usually ignore her texts. Not that they texted often. They lived in the same house and their routine was smooth. Her eyes darted to the elevator as it dinged again and yet a man that wasn't him stepped out, a little surprised to have seen her but quickly going on his way. As though he was scared and looking at her might bring him misfortune.
Her finger was hovering over the call button when the elevator dinged again—not the one she had been watching behind her but the one ahead, the executive one—and Sulivan finally stepped out.
