Chapter 4 - Chapter 4 — Beginnings and Bonds

Beijing stirred with quiet energy, but for Fang Yuhan, the morning held a promise. The sprawling campus of Tsinghua University, steeped in history and academic prestige, welcomed its new batch of students. For most, it was excitement; for her, it was another step in a journey already guided by careful planning.

Fang Yuhan adjusted the strap of her bag and stepped through the gates, sunlight glinting off the glass domes and red brick facades. Even amidst the flurry of freshmen and parents, she walked with composure, each step measured, confident—an aura of understated strength that came naturally, a gift honed from years of her brother's quiet influence.

She paused briefly, glancing at the sprawling lawns. A cluster of students practiced martial forms nearby, subtle Qi radiating even at a distance. A soft smile touched her lips. Though she had focused on academic excellence, the memories of her childhood—the subtle exercises, her brother's guidance in breathing and Qi control—were never far behind.

"Fang Yuhan!"

The voice carried a light tease, familiar and comforting. She turned to see Su Qingxue, her childhood friend and Fang Ze's neighbor, striding toward her with a relaxed ease that made her seem as if she belonged anywhere. Even in the chaos of the campus, she moved with an almost instinctive grace, steps light yet purposeful, eyes scanning the environment with quiet awareness.

Qingxue's presence reminded Yuhan of simpler days—of afternoons practicing minor Qi exercises in the courtyard, of whispered debates about who could hold a stance longer, of shared laughter under the fading evening sun.

"Qingxue," Yuhan greeted warmly, a subtle blush rising. "You made it."

"As if I'd let you go off alone," Qingxue replied, smirking. Her gaze flicked around briefly, catching faint currents in the air—threads of energy that hinted at the subtle awakening of potential. "Be honest, Yuhan. Do you feel it too? The city's… changing."

Yuhan nodded. She had noticed the subtle shifts back home: her father's measured movements at the city administration, her mother's careful attention to visitors at the bookstore, the quiet hum of cultivators walking unseen streets. The world was shifting, even beneath their ordinary lives.

Their conversation paused as a group of students passed by, carrying themselves with the subtle confidence of those who had been trained from a young age. The atmosphere was buzzing with potential—a gentle reminder of the Golden Era slowly awakening, far beyond Beijing's streets.

"Have you… been keeping up with him?" Yuhan asked quietly, her voice tinged with curiosity and concern.

Qingxue's eyes darkened faintly, just for a moment, before the easy smile returned. "You mean Fang Ze? He's… well, he's always a step ahead. You know him—he doesn't need the spotlight to move mountains."

Yuhan let out a soft laugh. "He always was a mystery. But… I can't help but wonder, with everything happening…" Her voice trailed off, filled with both awe and subtle worry.

Qingxue's gaze softened. "Don't worry. He's been through this before. He knows how to handle it."

A shadow passed across the campus lawns—the faint ripple of energy only perceptible to those who had already felt it. Both girls instinctively paused, eyes scanning, hearts beating just slightly faster. The Golden Era was awakening in subtle ways, and even now, prodigies from distant cities were stirring.

Yet here, in this moment, it was simply two friends—one on the threshold of academic life, the other quietly tracing the first lines of her destiny. Behind them, the city pulsed with potential, threads of unseen Qi stretching toward futures still unwritten.

"Come on," Qingxue said, nudging Yuhan gently. "You've got your schedule. Let's see how you hold your ground in the world beyond your courtyard."

Yuhan straightened, shoulders squared, and together, they stepped toward the lecture halls, their laughter mingling with the morning breeze—a small, human reminder that even amidst the resurgence of spiritual energy and rising prodigies, life still held ordinary joys… and extraordinary bonds.
