Chapter 19 - Betrayal Hurts More When It’s Family

Joon-woo and Ah-rin walked quietly along the familiar path leading to the Kim mansion.

The evening air was heavy, almost suffocating with the memories that clung to this place. Both of them were tense—Ah-rin's mind replayed the chaos of the previous night, and Joon-woo's thoughts lingered on the twins, wondering how they had handled the shock.

"This should be simple," Joon-woo said under his breath. "We get the kids, and we leave. No drama."

Ah-rin nodded, though her stomach twisted nervously.

"I just… I want to make sure they're okay. Then we can go… somewhere safe."

They stepped through the mansion gates, the staff bowing automatically. The grand house loomed, quiet and still, as if holding its breath.

As they entered the hall, a figure appeared at the staircase. Ah-rin froze.

It was Hae-in.

Her posture was elegant, composed, and commanding. Not a trace of the playful childhood friend she once knew remained.

"Hae-in…" Ah-rin's voice caught in her throat.

Hae-in's eyes met hers calmly. "Ah-rin."

She simply greeted her. Her tone was soft, almost familiar, but there was a cold, calculated edge that made Ah-rin's chest tighten.

"W-what are you doing here?" Ah-rin managed, trying to steady her voice.

"Oh! It's my house too. I live here now," Hae-in said simply. "After you left, Father adopted me. I'm… the Kim daughter now."

Ah-rin's mind spun. "Adopted…? But… you were my friend—my best friend!"

Hae-in's expression was unreadable, a faint smile on her lips. "As you know, I was an orphan, Ah-rin. My uncle and aunt treated me like a burden, never loved me, never cared. After you left, Father… he offered them a sum to bring me here. And I was raised carefully to be a Kim."

Ah-rin's fists clenched. She knew what her father meant by doing so. She knew his intention. Her best friend… had been groomed to replace her, to occupy the life she had fought so hard to reclaim.

Joon-woo, standing beside her, narrowed his eyes.

"Wait… so your father… he raised her as a Kim, in your place? But why?"

Hae-in's gaze flicked to him, soft but firm.

"Because… Someone had to protect the family's reputation in her place. Someone had to manage the situation. And now, he wants us to continue what was intended. Marriage. To restore the alliance between our families. He wants you to marry me, Joon-woo, in place of Ah-rin."

Ah-rin's heart sank. Rage, shock, and helplessness collided in her chest. "No… this can't… he can't—"

Joon-woo tightened his jaw, his arm instinctively moving protectively around Ah-rin.

"We came for the twins. That's all. We're leaving. Anyone who stands in our way will regret it."

Hae-in's eyes softened slightly, almost wistful.

"I didn't choose this, Ah-rin. I didn't choose to replace you. But this is what my life has become… what I've been made to be. And now… the family expects it from us."

Then she looked at Joon-woo.

"Father already spoke to your father. He agreed. He invited you here tonight to discuss it only. You'd better think carefully before making any decision."

Ah-rin's chest heaved. The mansion, once familiar, now felt like a cage. Every memory, every expectation of her father, every carefully constructed lie surrounded her.

She looked at Joon-woo, his gaze steady but protective. Together, they were the only line of defense for their children—and for themselves.

Her heart pounded. She swallowed hard, her voice trembling but determined. "This… isn't over. Not by a long shot."

Hae-in's lips curved into a small, sharp smile. "I suppose we'll see… then."

The air between them was heavy, loaded with unspoken threats, past betrayals, and the shadow of the Kim family's schemes. And at the center of it all were the twins—innocent, unknowing, and now at the heart of a dangerous game.

The commotion drew the Kim family downstairs. The twins were with their grandmother, but as soon as Ah-rin and Joon-woo entered, the air thickened with tension.

Ah-rin's eyes darted between Hae-in and her father, disbelief and fury twisting inside her.

"What is she talking about, Mr. Kim?" she demanded, her voice sharp. "Explain yourself! How could you go to such lengths—replace me to save your reputation?"

Mr. Kim cleared his throat, unbothered by the rising tension. "It is true," he said firmly. "You are no longer a Kim. Your marriage to Joon-woo was always meant to strengthen the family. Now that you have left, the marriage is… Hae-in's right."

Gasps and murmurs filled the room. Joon-woo's eyes narrowed, shock and anger simmering beneath the surface.

"You… never said it was to replace Ah-rin," Boo-hyun shouted, stepping forward. "You claimed you were adopting her because you missed your daughter! Not to swap her in for my sister!"

Mrs. Kim remained speechless. She had accepted Hae-in into the family as her husband's choice, but she never imagined the adoption was a calculated replacement.

The truth struck her like ice.

The twins, though young, sensed the tension and their mother's pain. Without hesitation, they wrenched themselves from their grandmother's hold and ran to Ah-rin, hugging her tightly.

Ah-rin closed her eyes, tears streaming down her cheeks.

"It's okay, Mommy. Don't cry. If they don't want you, we still have you," Noah whispered.

"We love you, Mommy," both Noah and Naomi said in unison, their innocence and loyalty piercing the cold walls of the mansion.

Joon-woo looked at the twins before looking at Ah-rin. His heart twisted painfully seeing her tears. He took a deep breath, steadying himself. Then he looked at Mr. Kim with icy clarity.

"Mr. Kim, with all due respect, I am already married. I have no intention of remarrying. Do not bring this topic up again. Otherwise…" His voice hardened. "…I will forget that you are my father-in-law."

His words hung in the air like a challenge.

Joon-woo placed a protective hand on Ah-rin's shoulder. Her heart raced, and for a fleeting moment, she longed to collapse into his arms—to let him shield her from the cruelty of the world.

But she couldn't. Not yet. There were battles left to fight, truths that demanded to be defended, and her children who needed her strength.

Exhausted and bruised, yet unbroken, Ah-rin straightened her back—her eyes burning with quiet, unshakable determination.

This war was far from over—and she would never give up in the middle. She would take back what had always been hers—no matter who or whatever stood in her way.
