Chapter 44 - Trials of Trust

Morning never truly arrived in the City Between Worlds.

The sky remained a constant silver-blue, but something had changed. The air felt heavier, as if doubt itself had settled between the floating platforms.

Ethan stood in the strategy chamber with Lyria, Kael, and Selara. The memory of Talia's words still echoed in his mind.

You must choose… between who you were and who you will become.

"We can't ignore this," Selara said calmly, breaking the silence. "The Eclipsed Order doesn't attack bodies first. It attacks trust."

Kael crossed his arms. "So what now? We pretend everything's fine while they crawl into Ethan's memories?"

Ethan met his gaze. "They showed me past versions of myself. Some failed. Some made terrible choices."

Lyria's expression tightened. "Did any of them… hurt the people they loved?"

Ethan hesitated.

That pause was enough.

The room grew quiet.

Kael's jaw clenched. "You're hiding something."

Ethan exhaled slowly. "In one world… I believed control was mercy. I chose for others. I thought I was saving them."

"And?" Kael pressed.

"And I destroyed everything."

Lyria took a step back, shock flickering across her face—not fear, but pain.

"You're not that person," she said quickly, though her voice wavered.

"But I could be," Ethan replied honestly. "That's what the Eclipsed Order wants us to doubt."

Selara studied him closely. "Honesty is dangerous… but lies are worse. You did the right thing by telling us."

Kael looked away. "Trust isn't automatic, Ethan. It's earned every time."

The tension was broken by a sudden alarm—low, vibrating, urgent.

One of the outer platforms began to destabilize.

"Shadows incoming!" a scout shouted.

They rushed outside. A thin squad of Shadowborn soldiers emerged from fractured space, moving in perfect formation—not chaotic, not violent—disciplined.

"They're testing our response," Selara said. "They want to see if we hesitate."

Ethan stepped forward, silver light flaring. "Then we don't."

He acted—but this time, he didn't command.

"Kael, left flank. Lyria, protect the civilians. Selara—cut their escape."

They moved instantly.

Kael struck with precision. Lyria's shields held firm. Selara vanished and reappeared behind the enemy, dismantling their formation silently.

Ethan engaged the leader directly. The Shadowborn soldier mirrored his movements eerily.

"You have failed before," it spoke. "You will fail again."

Ethan steadied himself. "Maybe. But not today."

Instead of overpowering it, he changed tactics—redirecting its attacks, forcing it into mistakes.

Choice. Adaptation. Trust.

The Shadowborn shattered into fading fragments.

Silence returned.

No one spoke at first.

Then Kael exhaled. "You didn't try to control us."

Ethan nodded. "Because this time… I trust you."

Lyria stepped closer, taking his hand. "And we choose to trust you. Not because you're perfect—but because you choose differently now."

Selara allowed herself a rare smile. "That's what makes you dangerous to them."

High above, unseen, the Eclipsed Order observed.

Their test had failed.

The bonds between Ethan and his allies had bent—but not broken.

And for the first time, the enemy understood something critical:

This was not a hero who could be isolated.

This was a leader forged by trust.
