The victory at the Silver Forest had brought a fleeting sense of relief.
But peace, Ethan knew, never lasted long.
Back at the central platform of the City Between Worlds, the team gathered to plan their next move. The Heart Shard pulsed softly in Ethan's hand, its warmth steadying him—but there was an undercurrent of unease in the air.
Selara frowned, studying the maps projected in front of them. "Something's off. The Shadowborn forces aren't regrouping like before—they're retreating… strategically."
Kael growled. "Strategic retreat? Or setup for a trap?"
Before Ethan could answer, an alert flashed across the chamber. One of the outer gates had been breached—but the strange thing was, no Shadowborn were visible.
"Impossible," Selara whispered. "Someone opened it from the inside."
Ethan's heart tightened. "A betrayal?"
Lyria stepped closer, her eyes wide with shock. "Could… could it be someone we trust?"
The warning lights flared again. This time, the breach was near their inner quarters. Ethan led the team cautiously. Every instinct screamed danger—but it wasn't the usual enemy.
In the shadows stood a figure they all recognized.
It was Kaelith's agent—a former ally thought to be loyal, now cloaked in the Eclipsed Order's dark energy.
"Why?" Ethan demanded. "After everything… why betray us?"
The figure laughed, cold and hollow. "You think this is personal? No. This is fate. And you—Heartbearer—have disrupted everything. Some sacrifices must be made."
The Heart Shard glowed brighter, responding to Ethan's rising resolve. "Sacrifices?" he spat. "We choose our own path!"
The agent attacked, wielding powers eerily similar to Ethan's own Heart Core—mirrored strikes that threatened to overwhelm him.
Ethan dodged and countered—not with brute force, but with strategy. His Heart Core pulsed in sync with the Heart Shard, redirecting the agent's attacks, protecting Lyria and Selara.
Kael leaped in, trying to flank the enemy, but the agent anticipated every move. The betrayal was precise.
"You trusted us," the agent hissed, circling Ethan. "And that makes you weak."
Ethan's eyes narrowed. "Trust isn't weakness. It's power."
With a sudden surge, the Heart Shard emitted a pulse that disrupted the agent's mirrored attacks. Ethan pressed forward, confronting the betrayer directly.
"You will not take what we protect!" he shouted.
The agent faltered, but before Ethan could strike, a portal opened behind the enemy. A shadowy figure—the Eclipsed Commander—appeared, observing silently.
"Interesting," it said. "He trusts too much. Let's see if that choice survives…"
The agent vanished into the portal, leaving the team shaken—but alive.
Lyria grabbed Ethan's arm. "Are you okay?"
He nodded slowly, heart racing. "Yes… but we've learned something important. The Order doesn't just attack with soldiers—they attack trust itself."
Selara studied the maps again, concern in her eyes. "We have a traitor among us… or worse, someone who can manipulate our very choices."
Kael clenched his fists. "Then it's not just about fighting anymore. It's about protecting what we value—before they can twist it."
Ethan looked at his friends, determination burning in his eyes. "Then we stay united. They can't break what they can't control."
Above the city, the stars shimmered as if acknowledging their resolve.
The battle for freedom and trust had entered a far deadlier phase.
