Chapter 75 - The Watcher’s Cruel Lesson

Hope never lasts quietly.

The City Between Worlds had only just begun to heal when the sky cracked—not with lightning, but with silence. The silver glow dimmed, as if someone had slowly turned down the light of existence itself.

Ethan felt it instantly.

The Heart Shard burned.

"This isn't an invasion," Selara whispered, eyes fixed on the sky. "It's… targeted."

A Painful Message

A single voice echoed across the city, calm and cold.

"You believe sacrifice makes you strong."

The Watcher.

"Let me teach you the cost of attachment."

Suddenly, multiple platforms began to fade—not collapse, but erase. Entire neighborhoods flickered like dying memories.

Lyria gasped. "They're not being destroyed—they're being removed from the timeline!"

Panic spread.

Ethan clenched his fists. "He's punishing us for caring."

A Choice No One Wanted

Selara's readings were clear—and terrifying.

"The only way to stop the erasure," she said, "is to redirect the Heart Shard's energy… but it will sever one emotional anchor."

Kael's voice dropped. "Meaning?"

Ethan swallowed. "Someone will be forgotten by the city."

Silence.

Caelara stepped forward. "Do it."

Everyone turned.

"If the Watcher wants cruelty," she said calmly, "let me bear it."

Ethan shook his head violently. "No. I won't choose that."

Caelara met his gaze. "This is what Aren taught us. Choice with meaning."

The Severing

The ritual began.

Light wrapped around Caelara as the Heart Shard pulsed painfully. Memories unraveled—not erased from existence, but removed from the city's collective soul.

Her name faded from public records.

Her image vanished from murals.

Her presence softened into absence.

The platforms stabilized.

The city was saved.

But at a terrible cost.

Caelara collapsed into Ethan's arms.

"I'm still here," she whispered. "Even if they don't remember me."

Ethan's tears fell silently. "I will."

Aftermath

The citizens felt an ache they couldn't explain—a missing warmth, a kindness they couldn't name.

Kael punched the wall in fury. Selara turned away, shaking.

"This is the Watcher's lesson," Lyria said softly. "Pain without destruction."

Far away, the Watcher observed.

"Yes," it murmured. "Now they understand."

A Quiet Promise

Later, Ethan sat beside Caelara in a hidden chamber.

"They may forget," he said, holding her hand. "But I won't let your choice disappear."

Caelara smiled weakly. "Then make it matter."

The Heart Shard glowed—not with power, but with resolve.
