Bella's POV
The heavy footsteps finally faded down the hallway, leaving only silence behind. Just me and Fiona now, sitting in this cramped room that smelled like dust and fear. My heart was still pounding from everything that had just happened.
At least Silas was with Toby. That was the only thing keeping me from completely falling apart right now. I had to trust him with my son, even though every instinct screamed at me to fight my way out of here and get to my baby.
I sat on the edge of the worn couch, my hands clenched so tight in my lap that my knuckles turned white. The gray concrete floor beneath my feet was cold and unforgiving. I kept staring at it, trying to make sense of how I ended up here.
Fiona shifted in her metal chair across from me. Her shoulders sagged like she was carrying the weight of the world. When she finally spoke, her voice cracked the silence between us.
"Bella, I need you to know that I'm sorry."
