Chapter 26 - Chapter 26: The Night of Long Knives

The Syndicate thought they understood Dante Vane. They thought he was a man of ledgers and libraries. They were wrong. He was a man of silence, and silence is the most efficient weapon in a war of shadows.

The takeover did not begin with a declaration. It began with a whisper in the ears of the "Invisible Class"—the janitors, the drivers, the dockworkers, and the tech-specialists who kept the Syndicate's heart beating. Dante had spent months during his "distraction" with Anna secretly buying their loyalty. While the Council looked at the throne, Dante was buying the floor they stood on.

On a Tuesday at 2:00 AM, the city's digital pulse flatlined.

Dante sat in the Bastion, his new command center located in the belly of a decommissioned steel mill. Before him was a grid of sixty monitors. He wasn't watching the stock market; he was watching the GPS trackers of every armored vehicle in the city.

"Phase One," Dante commanded. His voice was cold, devoid of the gravelly warmth he reserved for Anna.

Across the city, the "Silencers"—Dante's hand-picked elite unit—moved. They didn't use guns. Guns were loud. They used garrotes, toxins, and high-frequency jammers.

At the Port of Lagos, the Syndicate's primary smuggling artery, three Council lieutenants were overseeing a shipment of illegal munitions. They didn't hear the cranes stop. They didn't notice the sudden absence of the night-shift workers.

Suddenly, the massive floodlights of the pier cut out. In the pitch black, the only sound was the rhythmic *hiss* of pressurized gas. By the time the lights flickered back on five minutes later, the three lieutenants were slumped against a shipping crate, their throats slit with surgical precision.

Dante watched the feed as his men began repainting the crates. They weren't stealing the cargo; they were rebranding it. By dawn, every foreman on the docks had been handed a new contract. Sign, or find out how deep the harbor was.

They all signed.
