"The ravine!" Alex shouted over the roar.
Ahead, Mankey was screeching, eyes wide with panic, lashing out at the air, It was terrified of the stampede, but paralyzed by the height of the ravine, as stupid monkeys đ do It had chosen fight over flight, and it was blocking the only exit.
"Move or die!" Alex roared, not slowing down. Mankey saw them but It didn't move aside, it shrieked and leaped, winding up a Karate Chop.
"Nidoran!" Alex yelled, "Double Kick that stupid monkey! Don't stop!"
Nidoran hit the log, Its claws dug into the rotting wood for traction and It didn't slow down to fight, It treated the Mankey like a hurdle.
Mankey chopped and Nidoran ducked, the momentum carrying it under the fist then, Nidoran kicked upward.
THUD.....CRACK.....
The first kick hit the Mankey's chin and the second one hit its chest, Mankey wasn't killed, but the force lifted it off its feet and It tumbled backward, flailing, and plummeted off the side of the log, vanishing into the darkness of the ravine below with a fading screech.

Nidoran landed on the far side of the ravine, Alex leaped after it, his boots skidding on the mud, barely clearing the gap. He rolled, scrambling up.
"Go! Move!"
But Nidoran didn't move, it froze completely, Its body arched, back spasms racking its small frame.
"Not now!" Alex pleaded, reaching for him.
Then, the light exploded.
It wasn't the soft glow of a level up, It was a blinding, white radiance that erupted from Nidoran's core, It cut through the gloom of the jungle, brighter than the sun.

The silhouette inside the light began to change, the small, rabbit like form suddenly elongated. The spine thickened and the Shoulders broadened, the small horn on the forehead grew, twisting and sharpening into a spear point. Spikes erupted along the back, jagged and cruel.
The light shattered like glass and Standing there wasn't a Nidoran, it was a beast on four legs, low to the ground but dense with muscle, Its fur was a vibrant, aggressive purple and Its eyes were no longer the fearful red of prey; they were the predatory crimson of a hunter.

It snorted, and a puff of toxic violet gas vented from its nostrils.
"Nidorino," Alex breathed.
The stampede hit the other side of the ravine, three Rhyhorns smashed into the bank, unable to stop, and fell into the pit. The ground shook violently, Nidorino looked at Alex, It was bigger now just about the size of a large wolf or a small motorcycle.
It lowered its body and It grunted, looking at its back.
Get on.
Alex didn't hesitate a bit , he vaulted onto Nidorino's back, grabbing the thick ridge of fur near the neck, careful to avoid the toxic spines.
"Run!"
Nidorino launched forward with speed that was terrifying. Where Nidoran scuttled, Nidorino galloped, Its claws tore up the earth and It surged up the incline toward Sector 1, leaving the roaring stampede in the dust.
The Central Tower was a mass of black steel rising from the center of the island.
A perimeter of heavy laser fences surrounded it, currently deactivated to let the survivors in.
Alex slid off Nidorino's back as they crossed the gate line, his legs wobbled and he looked around, the courtyard was a mess of exhausted, muddy teenagers and Some were crying, some were unconscious. Medics in white uniforms moved among them, tagging them.
"ID," a grunt at the gate barked, holding a scanner.
Alex held up his wrist.
[ ID: 4491 (Ares) ]
[ Status: SURVIVED ]
"Barracks 4, Showers are on the left and the Mess hall opens at 18:00, Move it."
Alex walked into the facility, The cold air conditioning hit him first....cool, processed air that smelled of perfumes and cleaning supplies.
After a month of rotting leaves and humid decay, it smelled like heaven. He found Barracks 4, It was a sterile room with real beds, not hammocks, not piles of leaves just Mattresses. Alex collapsed onto the nearest bunk and he didn't even take his boots off.
"We made it buddy," he whispered.
Nidorino, too big to curl up on the bed lay down on the floor beside him, It rested its heavy, horned head on the mattress frame, closing its eyes. Alex reached down and patted the rough, spiky fur.
"Good job, partner."
He closed his eyes, and for the first time in thirty days, he slept without one ear open.
The Next Morning
Alex woke up to the sound of a buzzer, he felt clean as had showered the night before, scrubbing layers of grime from his skin.
He had eaten a hot meal, actual stew with meat chunks and god forbidden an actual burger in the mess hall.
He wasn't done yet, he walked out of the barracks, stepping into the morning sun of the base courtyard.
Most recruits were lounging, enjoying the safety, they thought the hard part was over.
Alex walked past them and climbed the external stairs of the watchtower, ignoring the "Authorized Personnel Only " sign until a guard stopped him.
"I just want to look," Alex said, sliding a vial of Concentrated Gloom Extract into the guard's hand.
"For the view."
The guard sniffed the vial, grinned like a crazy maniac, and stepped aside, well maybe he could build a meth empire here, like breaking bad.... I could supply Giovanni and prof oak with good stuff and make them addicted.....mm things to think later.....
Alex climbed to the observation deck.
From here, he could see the entire island.
It was massive. Sectors 1, 2, and 3...the jungle, the coast, the river were just the southern tip. To the north, a massive mountain range pierced the clouds and to the west, a dense, dark swamp stretched for miles and separating the Rocket Controlled Zone from the rest was a high, electrified chain-link fence running east to west.
"They haven't conquered it," Alex realized, looking at the vast expanse beyond the fence. "They're just camping on the some parts."
The fence was marked with warning signs: UNCHARTED DANGER LEVEL: EXTREME
Alex took a deep breath,Team Rocket was efficient, If they hadn't expanded there, it was because it wasn't cost-effective... or because something pushed them back.
"Rare Pokémon," Alex whispered. "Rare herbs....or maybe some Ancient ruins.", If he stayed in the Safe Zone for the next month, he would fight recruits for scraps and he would level up slowly but out there? beyond the fence?
"That's where the real treasure is," he theorized. "That's where the items that spawn once a decade are sitting, waiting to be picked up."
He needed to cross that fence but to do that, he needed supplies and he needed to be self-sufficient for a month.
He checked his points, the survival bonus for passing the Evaluation had just hit.

"500 points," Alex grinned. "That's two Pokéballs and a week of rations. Or..."
He looked down at the courtyard where his Nidorino was waiting.
"Or I invest in gear."
He formulated the plan, "I'm not going to be a grunt," Alex said to the wind. "I'm going to be an fucking explorer."
He turned and walked down the stairs, he needed to buy Pokéballs and had to find a map, the evaluation was over but the real game had just begun....and he a freaking gamer is gonna dominate the shit out of it, dinner ..dinner..... chicken dinner.....
