Chapter 48 - PROLOGUE

Adnan and Saba did not meet at the beginning of their lives.

They met after survival had already shaped them.

He had learned to live by refusing attachment.

She had learned to endure by releasing expectation.

He guarded himself from the future.

She guarded herself from the past.

Neither of them entered marriage believing it would heal anything.

Neither of them arrived looking to be saved.

They stood beside each other not because love pulled them forward —

but because loss had pushed them to the same edge.

What bound them was not hope.

It was restraint.

Two people who understood that closeness can wound.

That silence can be protective.

That dignity is sometimes the last thing you have left.

They did not know yet how dangerous that understanding would be —

to recognize themselves in someone else.

And they did not yet know that survival, when shared, does not remain neutral for long.
