"I didn't kill him," Aren replied.
"That's the problem."
She looked upward, as if stone and distance meant nothing. "Something old just woke up. Something that prefers obedience over balance."
Aren sat on the edge of his bunk. "Then let it come."
Her expression hardened. "Careful. You're not strong enough yet."
He met her eyes. "But I will be."
