Chapter 13 - chapter 13: the whispers of the high head

The transformation in Kaito was undeniable. He no longer walked with the heavy, labored gait of a man carrying a curse; the World-Sap had woven itself into his muscles, giving him a fluid, lethal grace. But in the Leaf Clan, where every leaf has ears, such a rapid recovery did not go unnoticed.

The Invitation

Kaito was summoned to the Apex Pavilion, the highest point in the city, where the branches touched the clouds. There sat Lord Veridian, the Head of the Leaf Clan and Elara's father. He didn't look like a warrior. He was thin, with eyes like ancient forest pools and skin that looked like polished mahogany.

"You have the scent of the World-Tree on you, traveler," Veridian said, his voice like the rustling of dry leaves. "Few outsiders survive the Sap. It usually rejects those with 'discordant' souls."

Elara stood by her father's side, looking anxious. She had seen the blackened moss in the grotto, though she hadn't told a soul.

The Pressure of the Forest

Veridian stood up and began to walk around Kaito. As he moved, the plants in the room reacted to his presence—flowers bloomed and vines reached out toward him.

"The Flame Clan is a culture of 'Taking'," Veridian continued. "They take the coal, they take the heat, they take the land. But you... you didn't just take the Sap. Something inside you ate it."

Suddenly, the wooden floor beneath Kaito's feet turned soft as quicksand. Vines shot up from the boards, wrapping around his ankles and wrists like iron cuffs.

"Father, stop!" Elara cried.

"Peace, daughter. I am merely checking the soil," Veridian said calmly. He leaned in close to Kaito, his eyes narrowing. "Tell me, Kaito of the Smolder. Why does the Great Tree shiver when you walk past? Why do the birds stop singing in the branches above your head?"

The God's Interference

Kaito felt the pressure of Veridian's spiritual aura—it was like being crushed by a falling forest. His instinct was to call for Kage, to shatter the vines with a Black Ripple.

"He is testing your 'Vessel', Kaito," Kage's voice was a low, vibrating hum. "He doesn't want to kill you. He wants to see if you leak. If you show a single spark of my power, he will seal you inside a tree for a thousand years."

Kaito gritted his teeth. He didn't fight the vines. Instead, he used the new stability the Sap had given him. He visualized the Ring as a deep, still well. He pulled all of his fear and all of Kage's darkness into the very bottom of that well, covering it with a layer of calm, green energy.

"I am just a boy who survived a fire, Lord Veridian," Kaito said, his voice steady. "If the trees shiver, perhaps it's because they remember the heat I escaped from."

The Suspicion Remains

Veridian stared at him for a long minute. The vines slowly receded back into the floorboards.

"Perhaps," the Lord said, though his eyes remained cold. "Or perhaps the trees are trying to warn us of a storm coming from within."

He turned away, dismissing them. As Kaito and Elara left the pavilion, Veridian gestured to a shadow in the corner. A Leaf-Stalker—an elite assassin—stepped forward.

"Follow him," Veridian whispered. "If he shows any sign of the 'Shadow-Mark', do not bring him back to me. Burn the branch he stands on."

The Warning

Back in his quarters, Kaito collapsed on his mat. His right hand was shaking. The Ring was pulsing—not with hunger, but with anticipation.

"He is wise, that old stick," Kage mused. "But wisdom cannot stop the cycle. The Flame Clan has already sent word. They know you are here. They are calling a 'Council of Five'. The game is no longer just about survival, Kaito. The world is coming for this tree."

Kaito looked out the window. In the distance, on the horizon of the Fire Lands, he could see a faint, orange glow. The hunt was no longer silent.
