Chapter 7 - Blood Awakening

Three years passed like sand slipping through an hourglass.

Lin Kai was now eight years old. He stood tall for his age, his black hair tied back in a neat ponytail, the crimson streaks running through it like veins of fire. He wore the formal ceremonial robes of the Lin Clan—deep indigo silk embroidered with silver clouds—and stood at the entrance of the Awakening Hall.

Today was the day.

The Blood Awakening Ceremony.

It was one of the most important day in a cultivator's life. It happened once every three years for all children between the ages of eight and ten. It was the filter, the great divide that separated the dragons from the worms.

"Nervous?" Yu Yue asked, her hand resting gently on his shoulder.

Lin Kai looked up. His mother was dressed in a gown of violet mist, her presence as ethereal as always. Yet, today, he sensed a strange tremble in her hand.

"A little," Lin Kai admitted, smoothing out his robes. "But I'm ready. I'm at the 9th Stage of the Mortal Foundation Realm. No one else my age has reached this peak."

"Confidence is good," Lin Feng said, stepping up beside them. He looked majestic, his aura thrumming with anticipation. "You are my son. Your blood carries the legacy of the Third Elder. You will not fail."

Lin Kai nodded, but his eyes wandered. He wasn't looking at the massive obsidian pillars of the hall, nor the swirling vortex of Qi in the ceiling. He was scanning the crowd.

'Where is she?'

He looked at the entrance. He looked at the VIP seats. He even squinted at the shadows behind the pillars.

Lin Yan'er was nowhere to be found.

It had been a year since she vanished. One day, they were playing tag in the garden; the next, she was gone. No goodbyes. No notes. When he asked his father, Lin Feng had just said, "She is training." When he asked his uncle, the Clan Leader, he was met with silence.

'She has to be here,' Lin Kai thought, clutching his chest. 'This is the Awakening Ceremony. It's mandatory. Even the Clan Leader has to attend. She wouldn't miss this.'

He walked into the center of the hall, leaving his parents at the sidelines. The hall was cavernous, filled with over forty children. The air buzzed with nervous energy.

"Lin Kai!"

"Brother Kai!"

A group of boys waved him over. These were his friends—or rather, his followers. In the last three years, Lin Kai had cemented his position as the "Big Brother" of the junior generation. He was smart, he was strong, and he didn't bully the weak.

"Hey, guys," Lin Kai greeted them, forcing a smile.

"You look tense, boss," a chubby boy named Lin Bo (the one he had tripped years ago, now his loyal lackey) whispered. "Looking for the Princess?"

Lin Kai sighed. "Have you heard anything?"

Lin Bo shook his head. "My dad says she was sent to a 'Secret Realm' for special training. But... missing the Awakening? That's weird."

Lin Kai clenched his fists. The anxiety in his gut wasn't just about the test anymore. It was the sinking feeling that he was being left behind.

Boom.

The great drums of the hall sounded, vibrating deep in their chests. The heavy doors swung open, and the crowd fell silent.

Clan Leader Lin Yang entered. He walked with the weight of a mountain, his expression unreadable. Beside him were the Grand Elders, old monsters who rarely showed their faces.

Lin Kai held his breath, scanning the space behind the Clan Leader.

Empty.

Lin Yan'er wasn't with him.

The realization hit Lin Kai like a bucket of ice water. She wasn't coming. The person he wanted to impress the most, the childhood friend he had sworn to protect... she was gone.

'Why?' he thought, a bitter taste filling his mouth. 'Did I do something wrong? Or is this just how the cultivation world works? People disappear, and the weak aren't owed an explanation.'

"Welcome," Lin Yang's voice boomed, amplifying without a microphone to reach every corner of the hall. "Today, you shed your mortal shells. Today, we see if you are destined for the Heavens or the Earth."

He gestured to the center of the room. There stood the Monolith of Truth. It was a towering slab of black stone, pulsating with ancient runes.

"The rules are simple," the presiding Elder announced. "Place your hand on the stone. Push your Qi into it. The stone will awaken your dormant bloodline."

"If you awaken a Grade 1 to 3 Bloodline, you will serve in the Outer Court."

"Grade 4 to 6, you will become Inner Disciples."

"Grade 7 to 9, you are Core Disciples, the future pillars of the clan."

"Grade 10, you are a Heaven's Chosen."

"And Grade 11..." The Elder paused, his eyes gleaming. "...is a legend. The Imperial Bloodline. The one who can ascend beyond this world."

The children whispered excitedly. Lin Kai stood still, his heart pounding against his ribs.

"First candidate: Lin Hu!"

A nervous boy walked up. He placed his hand on the stone. The stone hummed, glowing with a faint yellow light. "Grade 3. Pass."

"Next!"

"Lin Mei!"

"Grade 5. Pass."

The ceremony dragged on. Lin Kai watched as child after child was judged. The tension in the room grew thicker with every name.

"Lin Hao!" The stone flared with a bright orange light, then settled into a deep, rich red. The air rippled.

"Grade 7! Awakened to the 7th Stage of the Blood Awakening Realm!"

The crowd cheered. The elders nodded approvingly. A Grade 7 was excellent. A future Elder for sure.
