Chapter 38 - chapter 38

With a fleeting, smug smile tugging at her lips, Riley turned to face the beast within the cage. The atmosphere inside Sky Lexus Arena shifted instantly. The betting surged—millions, then tens of millions—pouring in from both the spectators' live feeds and those seated in the arena itself.

Most of the students at Sky Domain Academy came from powerful families, their backgrounds steeped in wealth and privilege. Money was no obstacle here; wagers were placed with the same ease as breathing. For them, this was entertainment, a spectacle. For Riley, it was everything.

Her eyes locked onto the beast. The creature bared its teeth, a silent dare gleaming in its ember‑black scales. The arena hushed, anticipation thickening the air. Every spectator leaned forward, eager to witness either triumph or disaster.

The silence stretched, heavy and suffocating. Riley's aura flared as she attempted to bind the beast's spirit. For a heartbeat, it seemed as though she might succeed. But then, without warning, her body convulsed. A sharp pain tore through her chest, and she spat out blood, collapsing to her knees.

Gasps rippled through the crowd. Panic spread like wildfire.

"What… what is going on?"

"Something's wrong—she didn't succeed!"

"Forget about that! The cage!"

"The cage is breaking!"

"The beast is breaking through!"

"Not good! Not good!"

"Why would she do something so reckless?"

"Her friend even warned her!"

The cage shuddered violently, iron bars bending under the beast's strength. With a deafening roar, the creature burst free, its massive body unfurling like a storm. Ember‑black scales glistened as its dragon horns gleamed under the arena lights. Its maw opened wide, and a ball of fire began to form, glowing brighter and hotter with each passing second.

The fireball swelled, aimed directly at Riley. She was frozen, her body trembling, her spiritual ocean shattered. Horror etched across her face as she realized the truth: she had failed.

But before the beast could unleash its fury, a figure appeared.

Tempest.

She moved with effortless grace, her presence commanding silence. With a calm flick of her wrist, she released a surge of power. The beast's roar faltered, its fireball dissipating into harmless sparks. Its colossal body collapsed to the ground, not dead, but plunged into a deep, unnatural sleep.

The arena erupted—not in panic, but in awe.

"Tempest…"

"She subdued it with a flick of her wrist!"

"She's incredible!"

"Unstoppable!"

More and more admirers turned their devotion toward her, voices rising in worship. Tempest's legend grew in that instant, her name etched deeper into the Academy's halls of glory.

Riley, meanwhile, knelt on the floor, her body trembling. Her face was pale, her eyes wide with horror. She could feel it—the emptiness inside her. Her spiritual ocean, the very foundation of her cultivation, was broken. She was no longer a beast tamer, no longer a cultivator. She was… ordinary.

Tears welled in her eyes. She couldn't believe it. All her years of training, all her sacrifices, all her ambition—gone in a single reckless gamble.

Tempest sighed softly, crouching down to Riley's level. Her expression was calm, almost pitying. From her sleeve, she produced a small pill, its surface glowing faintly with restorative energy.

"This will fix it," Tempest said, her voice steady, almost gentle.

Riley's trembling hands reached out. She looked up at Tempest, her vision blurred by tears. The pill was her only hope, her last chance. She swallowed it, desperation etched into every movement.

Tempest's gaze lingered on her, sharp yet compassionate. "Make sure to seek forgiveness," she said firmly. "And don't do anything reckless again."

Her words carried weight, not just advice but a warning.

Tempest rose to her feet, her aura radiating authority. As she stood, her companions—her loyal gang—arrived beside her, their presence reinforcing her dominance. Together, they formed a wall of power and prestige, untouchable in the eyes of the spectators.

The crowd roared once more, their admiration for Tempest reaching fever pitch. She had saved the arena, subdued the beast, and reminded everyone why she was the Academy's brightest star.

Riley remained on the ground, her body weak, her spirit shattered. The pill's warmth spread through her veins, but it could not mend the wound in her heart. She had chased ambition, cast aside her closest friend, and gambled everything for recognition. And now, she was left with nothing but regret.

The arena lights dimmed slightly, casting long shadows across the floor. Riley's tears fell silently, mingling with the blood she had spat moments before. Around her, the cheers for Tempest grew louder, drowning out her pain.

She realized then that she had become invisible again—not because she lacked talent, but because she had destroyed herself in her pursuit of glory.

And as Tempest walked away, surrounded by her gang and basking in adoration, Riley understood the cruel truth: sometimes, the path to greatness is not forged by reckless ambition, but by patience, wisdom, and the strength to resist envy.

Her story was not over, but the chapter had closed with a bitter lesson.
