Chapter 68 - Chapter 68: Giovanni Appears

The heavy, rhythmic tread of boots on stone echoed through the cavernous space. A figure descended the stairs, his presence a palpable wave of authority that silenced all thought. He wasn't a large man, but he carried himself with the unshakable confidence of someone who had never known defeat.

He was impeccably dressed in a tailored black suit, a stark white shirt, and a vibrant red tie that was the only splash of color on his person. His dark hair was slicked back from a high forehead, and his face was all sharp angles and cold intelligence. But it was his eyes that held the room captive. They were a piercing, intelligent shade of gray that seemed to see right through you, to strip away all pretense and lay your soul bare.

Eliana's eyes perked up, this was him. Giovanni, the boss of Team Rocket. The man who apparently had major control over not only Kanto's government but Johto's government as well.

He reached the bottom of the stairs and his gaze swept slowly, deliberately, across the assembled trainers and their apprentices. It was a look of ownership, of absolute command. He didn't need to raise his voice; when he spoke, it was a calm, measured baritone that carried to every corner of the hall.

"Welcome my Executives," he said to the official members of his team, before turning to look over each apprentice. "Each of you were chosen for your potential, your ruthlessness, or some other quality your mentor deemed worthy." He paused, letting the words settle in. "Potential, however, is a currency that must be spent. It is worthless if it remains untested."

He began to walk slowly around the perimeter of the group, a lion surveying its pride. The executive members showed no emotion on their faces, all used to Giovanni's presence. Whil the apprentices' faces showed barying expressions, ranging from bored to fearful.

"This ceremony is not a game, it is not a friendly competition. Here, you will be forged, or you will be broken. Only the strongest will be granted the honor of initiation. Only the most worthy will be given a place within Team Rocket." He stopped in front of Eliana, his gray eyes locking onto hers for a moment before moving on.

"You will first be questioned by a trusted advisor, a man who has served me for many years," Giovanni continued, "He will decide if you have what it takes to continue."

"If you succeed there you will move onto the battle competition." Giovanni answered, his voice cutting through the stillness as he resumed his slow, predatory circuit of the room. He clasped his hands behind his back, the picture of a calm, collected commander. "The rules are simple, will be a single-elimination tournament. Each match will be a one-on-one battle. When your Pokémon is unable to battle, you are out. There will be no substitutions."

"The pairings for the first round will be determined by lot," Giovanni said, gesturing to a servant who brought forward a polished mahogany box. "From this point forward, you are rivals. Your objective is clear: be the last one standing. You will receive a helpful reward for the final challenge."

He paused, letting the weight of the prize settle in the air. "Now onto the last challenge."

The apprentices all perked up at that and Giovanni continued, "The top four battlers will each be put into the field against a team of grunts, six people total."

Giovanni paused to observe the expressions of those in front of him, "You will fight to survive, it will be only you and your Pokémon for one hour. "

Eliana's mind perked up, the information slotting into place with cool precision. It seemed that this final test would test their ability to end a life. Looks like she'll be able to have fun here after all.

"The victors will be initiated as full operatives of Team Rocket, with all the privileges and responsibilities that entails." Giovanni stopped pacing, standing in the center of the circle they had formed. "The losers will be returned to your former lives. Or not," he added, the last word spoken with a chilling lack of emotion. "That will depend on your mentor's discretion."

He gestured to the servant with a box. "Draw your lots. The questioning will begin shortly."

One by one, the apprentices approached the box. Helio swaggered up, plucking a small, polished black stone from the velvet lining. He glanced at the number etched into it before pocketing it with a confident smirk. Gisele followed, her movements stiff and nervous, her fingers trembling slightly as she drew her stone. The others followed suit, a silent procession of tense figures. Silver snatched his from the box with a scowl, while Inacio accepted his with a cool, impassive nod.

Finally, it was Eliana's turn. She walked to the box, her steps silent on the stone floor. She reached in without looking, her fingers closing around a smooth, cool stone. She pulled it out. A number '3' was carved into its surface. Quickly the rest of the group picked their numbers.

"The interviews will now commence," Giovanni continued, "Don't waste my advisor's time with lies or bravado. Answer him clearly and concisely."

He turned to the silent servant who had opened the door. "Bring them to the interrogation room. You will call them in one by one. The others will wait in the prepared guest lounge." He then turned to the adults, "You will wait in my office."

With that, Giovanni turned and strode away, disappearing down a long, shadowed corridor without a backward glance. The atmosphere, already heavy, seemed to thicken with anticipation.

The servant stepped forward, his face as blank as a slate. "If you will follow me."

He led them away. Eliana glanced at Sabrina, who gave a minute, almost imperceptible nod before turning to follow the other adults down the corridor Giovanni had taken.

"Marcio," the servant intoned. The executive and the stiff-backed apprentice stepped forward. "You will be first." He led them through a small, unobtrusive door set into the wall beneath the grand staircase.

The remaining apprentices stood in a tense, silent cluster. Helio, ever the opportunist, immediately tried to re-engage Gisele.
