π WEIGH-INS β MARCH 6, 2:00 PM
The Busan Exhibition Center was buzzing with energy as fighters, coaches, and fans gathered for the official Road FC amateur tournament weigh-ins. Ji-Ho stepped onto the scale wearing only his compression shorts β the digital readout flashed 134.8 lbs β perfect for the bantamweight division.
"Looks good, kid," Coach Kim said, clapping him on the back. "Now go hydrate β you need to be strong for tomorrow."
As Ji-Ho stepped off the scale, he saw his opponent β Choi Min-Woo β standing across the room. Min-Woo was slightly shorter than Ji-Ho but more muscular, with tattoos covering his arms and a confident smirk on his face. When their eyes met, Min-Woo nodded once β a respectful acknowledgment between fighters β before turning to talk to his own coaches.
Ji-Ho's family and Takeshi arrived just as he finished rehydrating. His mom brought him a thermos of chicken soup, his dad was taking photos of everything, and his sisters were wearing custom t-shirts that read "JI-HO β FUTURE CHAMPION."
"Look at you," Takeshi said, grinning as he clapped Ji-Ho on the shoulder. "You look like a real fighter now. Ready to show everyone what you've got?"
"More than ready," Ji-Ho replied, his voice steady despite the butterflies in his stomach. The excitement was building inside him β all the training, all the sacrifice, all the early mornings and late nights were leading to this moment.
π€ THE NIGHT BEFORE
Ji-Ho could barely sleep that night. He lay in his hotel room, going over the game plan in his head one more time: control distance with footwork, avoid the left kick, look for opportunities to take Min-Woo down, conserve energy for later rounds.
Coach Kim knocked on his door and came in, carrying two cups of herbal tea. "Nervous?" he asked, sitting down on the edge of the bed.
"Excited more than anything," Ji-Ho said honestly. "I just want to get in there and fight."
"That's the right attitude," Coach Kim said, handing him a cup. "But remember β excitement is good, but don't let it make you reckless. Stick to the plan we've been working on. Trust your training, trust your instincts, and most importantly β trust yourself."
They sat in silence for a few minutes, drinking their tea and watching the city lights of Busan through the window. When Coach Kim stood up to leave, he paused at the door.
"One more thing β win or lose, you've already achieved something special. Not everyone has the courage to step into that cage for the first time. Make us proud."
π₯ FIGHT DAY β MARCH 7, 7:00 PM
The arena was packed by the time Ji-Ho's name was announced. The crowd roared as he walked down the ramp, his corner team behind him and his family cheering loudly from the front row. He could feel the energy of the crowd coursing through him β every cheer, every shout pushing him forward.
In the cage, he did his warm-up routine β shadowboxing, stretching, jumping jacks β as Min-Woo made his entrance to even louder cheers (he was from Busan, so most of the local crowd was rooting for him). The referee called them to the center of the cage to go over the rules one last time.
"Protect yourself at all times. No strikes to the back of the head. Tap immediately if you're caught in a submission. Understand?"
Both fighters nodded.
"Touch gloves and let's have a good fight."
They tapped gloves quickly, then stepped back to their corners as the referee signaled for the first round to begin.
β±οΈ ROUND 1 β CONTROL THE PACE
"3β¦ 2β¦ 1β¦ FIGHT!"
Min-Woo charged forward immediately, throwing a left kick that Ji-Ho easily dodged by shifting to southpaw. His footwork was smooth and precise β all those drills with Coach Kang paying off as he circled away from danger, keeping Min-Woo at arm's length.
Min-Woo threw a jab to the head, then another left kick β this one aimed at Ji-Ho's ribs. Ji-Ho checked it with his elbow, then countered with a right cross that landed clean on Min-Woo's jaw. The crowd gasped β Ji-Ho had landed the first significant strike of the fight.
"Good job! Keep moving!" Coach Kim shouted from the corner.
Min-Woo pressed harder now, throwing combinations of punches and kicks that Ji-Ho avoided with quick footwork and head movement. Every time Min-Woo committed to a strike, Ji-Ho countered β a jab here, a low kick there, always staying one step ahead.
With two minutes left in the round, Min-Woo threw a powerful left kick that Ji-Ho saw coming. He caught it with his left hand, swept Min-Woo's standing leg with his right foot, and took him down smoothly to the mat β exactly the technique he'd practiced with Coach Park.
Ji-Ho moved to half-guard, using his wrestling base to control Min-Woo's movements. He landed light ground-and-pound strikes to keep his opponent busy, then tried to pass to mount. Min-Woo defended well, but Ji-Ho could feel him struggling under his weight β his endurance training was already making a difference.
The round ended with Ji-Ho in control on the ground. As he walked back to his corner, Coach Park handed him water and a towel.
"Great round! You did exactly what we practiced β controlled distance, avoided his power shots, took him down when you had the chance. Keep it up in round two."
π₯ ROUND 2 β THE FINISH
Ji-Ho came out for the second round feeling confident. He switched between orthodox and southpaw stances effortlessly, keeping Min-Woo guessing where his next attack would come from.
Min-Woo looked slightly winded now β his movements not as sharp as they were in the first round. He threw another left kick, but this time Ji-Ho didn't dodge or check it β he stepped inside, ducked under the kick, and landed a crisp right hook to Min-Woo's body.
Min-Woo grunted and stepped back, but Ji-Ho pressed forward, throwing a combination of punches to the head to keep him busy. Then, just as Min-Woo raised his hands to defend his face, Ji-Ho threw a powerful left hook to the liver β exactly the shot he'd practiced with Coach Lee, inspired by Manny Pacquiao's body punching.
Min-Woo dropped to his knees immediately, his hands clutching his side as he gasped for air. Ji-Ho stepped back β he knew the fight was over β as the referee rushed in to stop the match.
"STOP THE FIGHT! STOP THE FIGHT!"
The referee waved his arms, signaling the end at 1:24 of the second round. Ji-Ho raised his hands in victory as the crowd erupted β even the local fans were cheering for the impressive newcomer from Seoul.
π VICTORY
Coach Kim and Coach Park rushed into the cage, lifting Ji-Ho's arm in celebration. Takeshi ran down from the stands, jumping over the cage fence to hug him. His family was on their feet, cheering and crying tears of joy.
The referee raised Ji-Ho's hand officially as the announcer called out:
"AND YOUR WINNER BY TECHNICAL KNOCKOUT β KIM JI-HO!"
Min-Woo had recovered enough to stand up, and he walked over to Ji-Ho, extending his hand. "Good fight," he said, a genuine smile on his face. "You're better than I thought you'd be."
"Thank you," Ji-Ho replied, shaking his hand. "You're a great fighter β I was lucky to get that shot in."
As Ji-Ho was led out of the cage to the winner's area, he looked around the arena β the bright lights, the cheering crowd, his family and friends celebrating his victory. He thought back to that eight-year-old kid watching UFC on TV, dreaming of this moment.
He'd won his first fight. He'd taken the first real step on his road to be a champion. And he knew β with every fiber of his being β that this was just the beginning.
