Chapter 17 - Seperated

~°~ Sarah's POV ~°~

What woke me up was the wind.

It was slapping my face really hard. Not the slapping you get when you place a hair dryer on your face, no this was more harsher...

More colder.

Like arctic winds formed a hand and bitch slapped you awake.

Yeah, that was the best description of it.

The moment I felt it, my eyes reluctantly opened to know what the source was. A part of my mind groggily thought I left the window open during a really cold night. However when I finally opened my eyes, my blood pressure spiked and my heart left my body with my soul.

Many people have had 'The falling dream'. Falling from a plane, a tree, a skyscraper or what have you, that was a normal thing that happened to people in dreams. I'd had one myself when I was a kid that made me scream, but I woke up, so no harm done.

Yet, when my eyes gazed at was before me, and my fear and panic climaxed without me waking up, I couldn't believe it.

Before me was an expanse, a vast terrain of hills and mountains scattered amidst valleys and chasms. The land looked bone dry, literally the color of dry bones and ash, not a sign of green anywhere in sight. It was an environment of greys, whites and blacks all over, as far as the eye could see. The only other colours were the slight shimmers of red I saw coming from the chasms dispersed like opened scars everywhere.

How could I see all this? You would think I was on one of those mountains, looking around but nope. I was not any mountain, hill or solid elevation, though I really wished I was.

I was falling down to the ground, from a height that would make a bird quizzy.

So, I did the most logical thing.

"Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!"

I screamed like a woman possessed, having very good reason to screech this time in my life.

"Sarah!?"

I turned my head and to my horror, (a bit of relief too), Lucas was a few feet away from me, plummeting down just like me.

"What's happening!? How did we get here!?" I shouted in terror.

"I don't know!" Lucas shouted back and I felt like crumbling to tears.

We were going to die, I thought in disbelief, what would happen to our bodies? Would we become like tooth paste or like beef chunks?

"It's okay," Lucas shouted reassuringly but this time I barely felt reassured, the ground was getting too close.

"We're going to die!" I shouted as tears burst from my eyes," Oh my Glob! We're going to freaking die!"

"I know... but ... we're together atleast." Lucas shouted back and I saw tears in his eyes too. He was just as scared as me, being flattened was not a pretty picture for your end.

"Lucas... I... Dad would have... he would -" I stuttered as sobs claimed my throat.

"It's okay. I know. Your dad would have been just as bad as us. I'm sure of it." Lucas bit his lip as he tried to reach for me.

I extended my hand to grasp his too, the ground was getting closer than ever, our landing spot was going to be a grey hill and I could already hear my bones smashing to bits.

"Sarah look at me." Lucas shouted and I lifted my head to look at him, his hand was so close to mine, just a few inches.

"Best friends?" He smiled sadly reaching for me. His smile held warmth and melancholic acceptance.

I gritted my teeth and reached for his hand too, so close our middle fingers were about to touch.

"Best frie-"

"Halt"

Like a captured photograph, we froze at the Voice's command, our bodies stopping a few thousand metres from the ground. The descent was now denied, seemingly gravity was rendered obselete. We were alive, our deaths avoided, but the only thing in both our minds was the question of who had spoken.

The voice had echoed around us and somehow it had echoed inside our minds, which was impossible. I tried to move but my body remained still, unable and unwilling to free itself from the command it had been given. I breathed, my heart beat, but any sense of motion was denied.

"Rise"

Our bodies started to rise up vertically, defying gravity once more, our limbs still frozen in place, the only thing we could move was now our eyes but we could not turn our heads to see the Voice's owner. After a few minutes of being raised back to the sky again, we stopped and a chilling pressure engulfed me.

My legs got goosebumps as I felt like a thousand wolves were leering at me with me cold hunger or a cold dead fish was being scrapped across my flesh and soul. It was unnerving, the sensation it's felt real and intangible, surreal yet true, my instincts were all over the place. I didn't feel anything physically touch me, but the urge to run, to shout and squirm was very real, very much real.

"Hmmm... Is it... A Damned?"

The pressure left me as the Voice returned and I looked at Lucas, seeing goosebumps all over him too.

Time seemed to stand still as the Voice placed the same pressure on Lucas as it had on me.

"To The Pit with you"

Lucas's eyes grew wide open as he moved his mouth to speak, "Sar-"

Before he could finish, he vanished in a blur as he fell faster than ever, like a bullet with no sign of stopping at all. I barely realized that I could and was moving my neck, my eyes all on Lucas, watching him fall head first into one of the many chasms below. As he entered, a small burst of red fire shot up like a plume of smoke, before dying down and vanishing to its low red hum.

"Lucas!" I shouted in horror, he was... dead. I couldn't believe it.

I didn't get a chance to even process my friends death, before I knew it my body was flipped upside down and I finally got a look to what was above and the owner of the voice.

I really wish I hadn't, but I didn't have a choice.

An eye.

That was the first thing I thought, then the size of the eye registered and my mind blew a fuse.

It was colossal!

A ginormous eyeball was before me, taking up more than two thirds of the sky. It had a crimson pupil, with a retina so black I thought of outer space with no stars. The crimson pupil was redder than blood, with a wet and lubricated sheen that made it captivating like blood mixed with slime.

Looking into the retina would be a mistake, I felt like it was drawing me into the void and I instinctively looked at the pupil to keep what was left of my vanishing sanity. I didn't understand this at all, everything was happening too fast for me to absorb anything.

"A Vessel... Welcome Home Dead One" The Voice, (The eye?), said to me in my ears and mind.

This time the Eye spoke directly to me, it's voice which had sounded like a hollow echo, became a reverberation like the aftermath of a bomb in my ears and my mind. That was unfortunately all my frazzled brain could take and I passed out fortunately, my fate left to The Giant eye in the sky.
