Chapter 25 - Chapter 25: The Game of Flames

The pyramid of floating wood settled onto the forest floor with a soft thud as the blue psychic glow faded. Kian held up the Premier Ball.

"Good work," he murmured. "Return."

A beam of red light shot out, engulfing the elegant form of Gardevoir. She dissolved into energy, sucked back into the capsule, but not before shooting one last, lingering look of distaste at Daisy—a look that promised she was watching from the inside.

Kian clipped the ball to his belt and looked at the pile of dead branches. "Well, the furniture is arranged. But unless you know a spell, we're still sitting in the dark. How do we burn them?"

Daisy rolled her eyes, digging into her designer shoulder bag. She pulled out a standard Pokéball, scuffed and worn, clearly not one of her personal luxury balls.

"I'm an Oak, Kian. We come prepared," she huffed. "This isn't mine—it's Grandpa's. He lends it to me for field work because he knows I hate carrying matches."

She tossed the ball casually. "Come out, Charmander."

The little orange lizard materialized with a cheerful cry, the flame on its tail illuminating the clearing instantly. It looked around, confused by the dense forest, but Daisy didn't give it time to acclimate.

"Use Ember. On the wood. Gently," she commanded, pointing a manicured finger at the pile.

The Charmander opened its mouth, spitting a small, controlled volley of fire. The dry leaves at the base of the pyramid caught instantly. Orange flames licked upward, crackling as they consumed the dry wood.

"Thanks. Return," Daisy said immediately, recalling the lizard before it could even ask for a treat.

She clipped the ball back and sighed, moving closer to the growing fire. She didn't sit on the dirt; she found a relatively flat rock near the warmth and perched on it, hugging her knees to her chest.

"Ahh, god... finally," she breathed out, closing her eyes as the heat washed over her shivering skin. The firelight danced across her face, softening her sharp expression and casting long, flickering shadows against her white skirt. "It was so cold. I thought my toes were going to fall off."

Kian sat on the opposite side of the fire, crossing his legs comfortably. He watched her through the flames. The heat was flushing her cheeks, returning the color to her face. She looked cozy, yet undeniably out of place—a porcelain doll dropped in the mud.

Daisy opened her eyes and glared at him through the smoke. "Just one night," she muttered, pointing a finger at him. "Only one night. And then I am going to kick your ass for making me fall in this trouble, you idiot."

Kian blinked, feigning innocence. "Me? What the fuck do you mean by me?" He laughed, shaking his head. "I was walking peacefully. It was you who came running down the road screaming my name. It was you who insisted on tagging along."

"Because my Grandpa told me to!" Daisy shot back, her voice rising an octave. "I didn't want to come! I wanted to be in my room, with my silk sheets and my plushies! This is... ugh, this is so boring. I miss my bedroom."

She slumped forward, resting her chin on her knees, staring into the fire with a pout that was equal parts bratty and cute. "There's no signal. There's no TV. Just bugs and you. Mostly bugs."

Kian chuckled low in his throat. He picked up a twig and tossed it into the fire, watching it spark.

"Well," Kian said, a mischievous glint entering his eyes. "If you're so bored... and since we're stuck here until sunrise... I have an idea to relieve your boredom."

Daisy lifted her head slowly, raising a skeptical eyebrow. "What?" she asked flatly. "Are you going to juggle pinecones?"

"No," Kian smirked, leaning forward so his face was illuminated by the fire. "We can play a game. What do you say?"

Daisy stared at him as if he had grown a second head. "A game? Which game would you play, idiot, in midnight and that too in a jungle? Hide and seek? Because if I hide, I'm leaving."

"I'm talking about Truth or Dare," Kian said, his voice dropping to a smooth, challenging purr. "Classic. Simple. Revealing. What do you say? Isn't it a good idea?"

Daisy scoffed loudly, throwing her head back. "Truth or Dare? Are we twelve? No way. I ain't going to play that shitty game. It's for teenagers at sleepovers."

"Ohh," Kian nodded slowly, a mocking look of understanding crossing his face. "I understand. You're scared."

Daisy froze. Her head snapped back down. "Excuse me?"

"It's okay, Daisy," Kian said soothingly, spreading his hands in a gesture of pity. "Not everyone has the guts. It's a dangerous game. Secrets come out. Dares get... intense. I get it. You're a refined lady. You're afraid you might reveal something... naughty."

Daisy's eyes narrowed into slits. Her pride, fragile and easily pricked, flared up hotter than the campfire.

"Scared?" she hissed, standing up from her rock. "What did you just say? No way! I am not scared! And definitely not from you!"

"You are scared," Kian insisted, leaning back and crossing his arms, looking utterly unconvinced. "That's why you don't want to play. You're terrified I'll ask you something you can't answer. Or dare you to do something you can't handle."

"I CAN HANDLE ANYTHING!" Daisy yelled, her voice echoing into the dark trees, startling a nearby HootHoot.

She stomped her foot, pointing at him aggressively. "No way I am scared! Okay! You want to play? Fine! Let's play!"

She sat back down hard, glaring at him with a fiery intensity that would have intimidated a lesser man.

"But remember, Kian," she warned, a cruel, competitive smile curling her lips. "If you choose dare... I am going to give you such a dare you will always remember it. I'm going to make you regret being born. What do you say?"

Kian's smile matched hers, dark and full of promise. He looked at her flushed face, the firelight reflecting in her defiant eyes, and knew he had her exactly where he wanted her.

"Done," Kian said softly. "Same thing with me, Daisy. No backing out."
