Noah groaned softly as the alarm on his phone buzzed. The motel room was still dim, lit only by the faint light of the rising sun filtering through the blinds. Today wasn't about training, adventure, or dates. Today was work. A *real job*.
He swung his legs off the bed and stretched, wincing as his muscles reminded him of the last few days' intense training. Even without using his powers today, his body was still sore—but in a good way.
After a quick shower and dressing in the plain but professional clothes he had chosen the night before, he grabbed his bag, double-checked his wallet, and stepped out.
The streets of Gotham were waking up. The air smelled faintly of exhaust, baked asphalt, and coffee from nearby cafes. He walked to the office building he had visited for the interview, feeling slightly nervous.
*It's just a desk job,* he muttered to himself. *You've handled worse… mostly.*
---
The office was already humming with activity when he entered. The receptionist smiled as he walked in.
"Good morning, Mr. Grey! You'll be starting with Mr. Hayes and Ms. Lin today," she said brightly.
Noah nodded, trying to look confident. "Morning. Thank you."
He followed her down the hallway again, heart thumping slightly. The interview had been smooth, but now it was real. Now he had to show he could *do the work*.
---
His new coworkers greeted him with polite smiles. Mr. Hayes, the gray-sweatered man from the interview, gave him a firm handshake. Ms. Lin, younger and lively, offered a quick nod.
"Welcome aboard," Mr. Hayes said. "We'll get you set up at your workstation and show you the systems. Nothing too complicated to start—you'll get used to our setup quickly."
Noah nodded. His hands itched to type, to dig into the work, to *do something productive*. He followed them through the small office, past desks with humming computers, buzzing printers, and the faint scent of coffee lingering in the air.
Finally, he arrived at his own desk. A plain cubicle, but clean and well-organized. His workstation was set up with dual monitors, a keyboard, mouse, and a small notebook.
"Here you go," Ms. Lin said. "Everything you need. Just start with the minor maintenance tasks we discussed yesterday."
Noah sat down, taking a deep breath. He glanced at the first task: fixing a recurring software glitch on one of the office's internal programs.
*No problem,* he thought. *This is basic stuff.*
He opened the software and immediately noticed the issue. A few misconfigured lines, some corrupted data entries. Normally, this would take a bit of trial and error to sort out. But Noah—subtly, quietly, almost instinctively—nudged the flow of logic in his mind. Lines of code that might have tripped him up seemed to organize themselves as he typed.
He smiled faintly. *Nice and easy. Just a little nudge, nothing obvious.*
By mid-morning, he had already completed three maintenance tasks. His confidence grew with each fix. His coworkers occasionally glanced at him, impressed at how quickly he moved through assignments.
"Mr. Grey, that was quick," Ms. Lin said, leaning over his cubicle wall. "Did you do IT somewhere else before?"
"No, just some freelance work," Noah said casually, keeping his tone light. "I've always liked tinkering with computers."
She smiled. "Well, keep it up. You're already making a good impression."
Noah grinned faintly, quietly thankful that he could make a good impression without being flashy or drawing attention to anything unusual.
---
Around lunchtime, the office took a break. Noah grabbed a sandwich from the small cafeteria downstairs. He found a quiet corner and sat alone, eating while observing the other employees chatting and laughing.
*This feels… normal,* he thought. *Like a life that could almost belong to me here.*
Almost.
Because even in this quiet, normal office, Gotham had a way of creeping into everything. He noticed a small flicker on the security monitors—something out of place. He squinted at the feed. Just for a moment, the shadow seemed off, too precise, too calculated.
He shook his head. *Paranoid. Relax. You're not here to save the city today.*
---
The afternoon brought a slightly larger problem: a network issue that was affecting multiple departments. Noah calmly approached the problem. The office chatter grew tense as people struggled to access their files.
He knelt at the server station, opening lines of code and checking network logs. Normally, this might have taken hours. He felt that familiar subtle pull—the edge of his power—guiding him, giving him intuition he wouldn't normally have. He adjusted a few settings, rerouted some lines of code, and within minutes, the network was back online.
"Wow," Ms. Lin said, eyes wide. "That was… fast."
Noah smiled faintly, shrugging. "Just lucky, I guess."
He leaned back in his chair, letting the relief wash over him. Today, he wasn't bending metal, fighting villains, or hiding from danger. Today, he was just… working. And he was good at it.
For the first time in weeks, he felt… normal.
---
As the day ended, Noah packed up his things. Mr. Hayes clapped him on the shoulder.
"Nice work today, Noah. You fit right in. Keep this up, and I can see a lot of opportunity for you here."
Noah nodded, feeling a genuine smile spread across his face.
Walking back to the motel, the city looked slightly less chaotic. The streets still smelled of exhaust, and sirens still echoed in the distance, but Noah felt grounded in a way he hadn't since arriving.
He thought about Pamela, about last night's dinner, and the fact that tomorrow he'd be back at this office, solving problems, earning a paycheck, slowly building a life.
It wasn't glamorous. It wasn't dangerous. It wasn't filled with villains or heroes.
But it was his.
And for Noah, that was more than enough.
He stepped into the motel, closing the door behind him, and muttered with a faint laugh, "Gotham… maybe you're not all chaos after all."
And somewhere across the city, eyes in the shadows narrowed, still watching, calculating.
Because while Noah might have found a foothold in this world… Gotham hadn't forgotten him yet.
