Chapter 58 - Spirits After Dark

The room, which had felt spacious moments ago, suddenly feels very crowded with five Spirit Kings and Queens now present.

Luminor is the first to approach, his golden light pulsing warmly.

[Luminor] "Wright. It's been too long."

[Wright] "Luminor. Good to see you again."

Nocturna materializes closer, her silver-white eyes gleaming with quiet pleasure.

[Nocturna] "Wright. You're looking well."

[Wright] "Thanks, Nocturna. You too."

The three spirits I haven't met before step forward. The water spirit moves with fluid grace, her form rippling like gentle waves.

[Thalassia] "I am Thalassia, Spirit Queen of Water. It's an honor to finally meet you, Wright. Sylphaeris has told us much about you."

She bows slightly, water droplets cascading from her hair.

[Wright] "The honor is mine."

The earth spirit approaches with slow, deliberate movement. His massive stone form rumbles as he speaks.

[Gaiaros] "Gaiaros. Spirit King of Earth."

He extends a hand that looks like it was carved from granite. I shake it carefully, feeling the rough texture of stone and the surprising warmth beneath.

[Wright] "Good to meet you, Gaiaros."

[Gaiaros] "Mm. Likewise."

Aethra lunges forward, her flames crackling to portray her excitement. The temperature in the room immediately rises several degrees.

[Aethra] "Aethra! Spirit Queen of Fire! Oh, this is amazing! I'm actually here! I'm actually meeting you!"

She grabs my hand with both of hers. Her touch is warm but not burning, like holding sun-warmed metal.

[Aethra] "Thank you so much for convincing the Goddess to let me visit! I was dying to join! Absolutely dying! Do you know how hard it is to watch everyone go on a vacation while you're stuck managing volcanic eruptions and dragonkin disputes?"

[Jyne] "If you were so bored, Aethra, perhaps you should focus on managing the volcanoes better. Then you'd have less time to worry about missing vacations."

Aethra opens her mouth, then closes it. Her flames flicker uncertainly.

[Aethra] "I... that's... well..."

She has no response.

The other spirits immediately crowd closer, all eager to talk.

[Thalassia] "Sylphaeris mentioned you cook exceptionally well. Is that true?"

[Gaiaros] "The Goddess. Respects you."

[Aethra] "Those things you call solar panels on your cabin are impressive. You said it harnesses the power of the sun? That's incredible! Can you teach me how to do that?"

[Luminor] "Indeed. I'd be quite interested in learning more. The sun is beyond our domains, but the principle seems fascinating and—"

They're all talking at once now, the questions overlapping. Aethra's flames are flaring with her excitement, making the room uncomfortably hot. Luminor's glow is intensifying as he gets more animated, growing brighter and brighter until it's hard to look directly at him.

Sylphaeris floats between them and me, looking increasingly annoyed.

[Sylphaeris] "Okay, everyone, back up! You're crowding him!"

[Aethra] "I'm just asking questions!"

[Sylphaeris] "You're also turning the room into a furnace! Stand next to Thalassia and cool down!"

[Aethra] "I'm not that hot!"

Everyone in the room is visibly sweating.

[Sylphaeris] "You absolutely are!"

[Luminor] "I don't see what the problem is—"

[Sylphaeris] "Luminor, you're getting too bright! I can barely see! Dim it down!"

Luminor's glow dims slightly. He looks sheepish.

[Thalassia] "Perhaps we are being a bit overwhelming."

[Gaiaros] "Mm. Enthusiastic."

[Wright] "It's fine. Let's just eat and talk instead. Easier to have a conversation over food."

Seraphina, who's been watching the chaos with amusement, stands gracefully.

[Seraphina] "I'll let the staff know we have new arrivals and to prepare meals accordingly."

She heads toward the door, already composing herself for the interaction with Madame Therys.

[Seraphina] "This should be interesting."

---

The staff responds with impressive efficiency. Within the hour, they've set up an elaborate dinner spread in one of the larger communal dining areas. The table is long and beautifully appointed, with enough space for everyone.

The spread is something else.

Roasted fowl glazed with a dark spiced reduction that shimmers faintly with magical essence. The meat is tender and falls off the bone, infused with herbs grown only in volcanic soil. Thick stew with root vegetables and chunks of meat in a rich, savory broth that tastes like it's been simmering for days. Grilled fish served with a citrus sauce from the demon kingdom's highlands. The fish is flaky and delicate, with a subtle smokiness underneath. Seasoned grains mixed with roasted vegetables, some familiar, some entirely foreign. Bright red tubers, deep purple roots, golden pods that release aromatic steam when broken open. Grilled vegetables with charred edges, drizzled with herb-infused oils or dusted with ground spices. Fresh bread still warm from the oven, served with compound butters that shimmer faintly.

Multiple carafes of wine, ranging from deep red to pale amber, each labeled with names I can't pronounce.

Everything is presented beautifully, and the aroma alone makes my stomach remind me how hungry I am.

We settle around the table, and the conversation immediately becomes lively.

[Thalassia] "This fish is magnificent. The preparation is exquisite."

She's seated near me, her watery form shimmering more contentedly with each bite.

[Thalassia] "Wright, I saw you were having trouble with that dungeon. I can help you cross that ocean easily."

[Wright] "Ah, don't worry about it. I'd like to work on that problem myself. Besides, Donny said he can give me a ride."

[Thalassia] "How admirable. Self-reliance is a rare quality these days."

Gaiaros works through his plate methodically, each movement deliberate. When he speaks, his voice resonates through the table.

[Gaiaros] "I heard. New crops?"

[Wright] "Yes, I gave Liora some seeds that I bought with my Online Shopping skill, and we're planning to cultivate crops from another world."

[Gaiaros] "Good. Diversity."

He nods approvingly, a few small pebbles dislodging from his shoulder and clinking onto his plate.

[Gaiaros] "Soil energy. Important."

[Wright] "Very. We've been careful about maintaining it."

[Gaiaros] "Mm. Smart."

Aethra, meanwhile, is practically vibrating with energy even while eating.

[Aethra] "So are you going to continue the farm after the Aldencrest refugees get back on their feet?"

[Wright] "I don't have plans to stop farming, but we'll be slowing down the efforts and not relying on growth acceleration magic too much. Instead we'll want to take it easy and let it grow naturally."

[Aethra] "That's incredible! My dragonkin are excellent at clearing the land. They'd be happy to help!"

[Thalassia] "My merfolk can help with the irrigation system and watering of the fields!"

[Gaiaros] "Elder dwarves. Make. Tools."

[Jyne] "Behave."

The single word from Jyne brings all three spirits to an immediate halt.

[Jyne] "And Aethra, perhaps if you spent less time gossiping with your dragonkin and more time managing your volcanic systems properly, you wouldn't be so surprised by productive work."

Aethra's flames flicker with indignation.

[Aethra] "My volcanic systems are perfectly managed! The last major eruption was over a decade ago!"

[Jyne] "And how many minor eruptions have there been in the past year?"

[Aethra] "Those don't count! They're natural venting!"

Across the table, Seraphina is on her third glass of wine, looking more relaxed than I've seen her all day.

[Seraphina] "Lucien, stop hogging the bread."

[Lucien] "I'm not hogging it. I took one piece."

[Seraphina] "You took three pieces."

[Lucien] "The first two were small."

[Seraphina] "They were the same size as everyone else's."

She reaches across and takes the bread basket, pointedly setting it on her side of the table.

[Lucien] "You're being unreasonable."

[Seraphina] "I'm being perfectly reasonable. You're being a glutton."

[Lucien] "Says the woman who's already finished two bottles of wine."

[Seraphina] "That's different. Wine is meant to be enjoyed. Bread is meant to be shared."

Vesper, sitting nearby, is already on her second full plate. She's eating with focused determination, pausing only to reach for more.

[Eldrin] "Vesper, pace yourself. There's plenty of food."

[Vesper] "That's exactly why I'm not pacing myself."

She loads another serving of the roasted fowl onto her plate.

[Vesper] "This glaze is incredible. I wonder if I could recreate this."

[Liora] "You don't cook."

[Vesper] "I could learn. I'm in charge of the skewers for our barbecues after all."

[Eldrin] "You just turn them."

The kids are clustered together at one end of the table, animatedly discussing their day.

[Yuki] "The Glacierwake Pool was amazing! So cold at first, but then your body adjusts and it feels incredible."

[Takeshi] "I'm still not sure about the cold plunge. The hot springs were perfect on their own."

[Aiko] "You just have to commit to it. Don't hesitate."

Snow is perched on Yuki's shoulder, occasionally accepting tiny morsels of fish. Umbra has positioned himself under the table where shadows pool, receiving periodic offerings of meat that disappear into the darkness.

Ignatia has her own small plate and is eating with regal precision.

[Ignatia] "Spirit Queen Aethra, the thermal regulation in this inn is remarkably sophisticated."

[Aethra] "Oh! You can feel that? Most beings can't distinguish the subtle variations."

[Ignatia] "I am sensitive to heat distribution. The runed stones in the heat chamber were particularly impressive."

[Aethra] "Right?! The enchanter here really knows what they're doing!"

Jyne sets down her cup, she's not eating, just holding it for appearance, and looks around the table at the assembled spirits.

[Jyne] "You know, if all of you put this much effort into your actual responsibilities as you do into finding excuses to vacation, the world would run much more smoothly."

[Thalassia] "We work very hard, Goddess."

[Jyne] "Do you? Because I recall redirecting three of your sacred rivers last month while you were too busy communing with the tides to notice they were flooding farmland."

[Thalassia] "That was... an oversight."

[Nocturna] "We all have occasional oversights."

[Jyne] "Nocturna, you let an entire coven of vampires relocate to a region with no night-blooming plants for them to cultivate. They nearly starved."

Nocturna's shadowy form shifts uncomfortably.

[Nocturna] "I did resolve that."

[Jyne] "After I pointed it out."

[Luminor] "In our defense—"

[Jyne] "Luminor, don't even start. The angels have been sending me prayers about inconsistent daylight cycles for months."

Luminor's glow dims with embarrassment.

[Gaiaros] "Mm. No complaints. About earth."

[Jyne] "Gaiaros, there was a sinkhole that swallowed half a village last spring."

[Gaiaros] "...Natural processes."

[Jyne] "Natural processes you're supposed to monitor and prevent."

Sylphaeris is trying very hard not to laugh, her form shimmering with barely suppressed mirth.

[Jyne] "And don't think you're exempt, Sylphaeris. The wind patterns over the eastern forests have been erratic."

[Sylphaeris] "I've been busy helping Wright!"

[Jyne] "Which is admirable. But your other responsibilities don't disappear just because you found something more interesting to do."

Despite the scolding, there's no real heat in Jyne's voice. It's almost... fond. Like a teacher chiding students she actually cares about.

The dinner continues in this chaotic, lively fashion. Multiple conversations happening simultaneously, laughter erupting from different parts of the table, the occasional minor argument breaking out and resolving just as quickly.

Sylphaeris keeps trying to dominate my attention, only to be constantly interrupted by the other spirits asking questions. Aethra and Thalassia get into a spirited debate about optimal farming techniques that somehow turns into an argument about temperature versus moisture in crop growth. Gaiaros occasionally interjects with single-word observations that somehow carry more weight than entire sentences.

The room is filled with voices, laughter, and constant movement. It's loud enough to be overwhelming, yet impossible not to enjoy.

Eventually, the meal winds down. People start excusing themselves, heading off to their rooms or other activities.

Lucien and Seraphina are the first to leave for a night walk. She hooks her arm through his, complaining under her breath about how "insufferably chivalrous" he is.

Eldrin excuses himself not long after, citing a desire to meditate in the Stillwind Sanctuaries before bed.

The Spirit Kings and Queens, however, show no signs of stopping. They migrate from the dining area to the public hot springs, their voices carrying down the hallway as they continue their conversation. I can hear Aethra's loud laughter and what sounds like bottles being opened.

[Takeshi] "Are they going to party all night?"

[Yuki] "Probably. They're spirits. I don't think they need sleep."

[Aiko] "Should we join them?"

[Liora] "I think they're fine on their own. Besides, I'm exhausted."

The kids head off to their shared suite, Yuki's familiars trailing behind. Vesper has already disappeared, presumably to claim one of the comfortable beds she's been eyeing all day.

I return to my suite, Jyne following along. I've been thinking about the private hot spring all night.

The suite is quiet and peaceful after the chaos of dinner. We change and slip into the water, the warmth immediately working its magic on my muscles. Jyne settles across from me, her expression softening. The steam rises in gentle curls, and through the windows I can see the lights of Luminara spread out below, with the mountains rising dark and majestic in the distance.

[Jyne] "Dinner was hectic."

[Wright] "It was."

[Jyne] "But I'm glad everyone was able to get together and have fun. They've all been working hard for the world. They deserved a chance to relax."

I nod, watching the steam rise and dissipate.

[Wright] "It's all about balance."

[Jyne] "Balance."

She laughs, a genuine sound of amusement.

[Jyne] "You're right. Work and rest, responsibility and relaxation. I forget that sometimes."

We soak in comfortable silence for a while, the warm water and peaceful atmosphere a world apart from the party still going on outside.

[Jyne] "This was a good break. Thank you for suggesting it."

[Wright] "You needed it."

[Jyne] "I did."

She tilts her head back, looking up at the ceiling where condensation has formed in delicate patterns.

[Jyne] "I'll come by next time for a visit. To chat, I mean. Instead of asking you to save the world again."

[Wright] "You're welcome anytime."

[Jyne] "I appreciate that."

She closes her eyes. I feel the subtle shift in the air, her presence retreating back to the divine realm. The body in the water across from me goes still.

What remains is the wooden doll, featureless and inert, sitting in the hot spring where Jyne had been.

I reach over and carefully retrieve it from the water, placing it in my Storage where it will be safe until Jyne needs it again.

Then I settle back into the water, alone now, and look out at the view.

The city lights twinkle below. The mountains stand eternal in the distance. The stars are beginning to emerge in the darkening sky, bright and clear in the mountain air.

Jyne's world. It really is beautiful.
