As his brother shoved him into his civilian vehicle before walking around to the other side and getting in as well. The vehicle was ordinary looking from the outside but indise anyone could tell it was too fancy. It was, of course, self driving. He tried desperately not to panic. He was not sure what triggered his powers to activate but he was running on the theory that it had to do with his desires? The BLT. Appearing infront of the Heros' Corp, then back home again.
Trying not to want for anything was a tall task but Allen DID NOT want to change forms infront of his brother. HELL NO! So he cleared his mind and shut his eyes as the robotic voice spoke through the car.
"Where would you like to go, Sir Aux?"
"The office." Allen rolled his eyes and said in a whisper, "Really? You call the Heroes Corp the office? Pffft child."
His brother gave him a good flick on the forehead as the system responded.
"Voice recognized. Starting route. Please remain seated until we reach our destination. Thank you."
The vehicle started moving and as his brother got comfy cozy he asked, "So tell me what you can. If you dont want to tell me exactly thats okay but could you at least give me some idea with what im working with before we go in?" He paused for a bit giving his brother a chance to respond when he didn't he continued. "As a B rank I do have some pull you know? But I can't help you if I dont know what the problem is." He said all of this but was pretty sure he knew exactly what the problem was and that he really couldn't help with it.
More silence.
"Suit yourself." He gave up. He wasn't so unsympathetic that he would force it out of him. Awakening was a big deal and could easily determine your future prospects in life.
New awakened had many mental issues to work through so his brother acting this way was part for the course actually.
"Well, it's not so much that I dont want to tell you..." Allen finally spoke up. Of course he was lying. There was a fat chance in he'll he would tell his brother the truth but he could walk around it. Emit a specific detail. "I'm not too sure what my powers are so far..." I stopped to think. Think very very very carefully so I didn't get a random craving again or want to be somewhere else.
"So far I've just had really strange things happen. Like um objects appearing out of nowhere and I did teleport.... Twice." There should be no way for my brother to discern anything from that but i wondered if I should even say this much. Should I have told him i could change the color of my toenails or some shit like that? Would he ask for proof? Urm... probably not but who could be too sure? Also, it would soon be in the data base and my brother would see it anyway.
'Damn. I am screwed. I'll never live it down.'
"Did you say teleportation?" My brother grinned wide while slapping me on the back. "That's great news! Why so glum then?" He paused for a second tilting his head as if remembering, "You said objects appearing? Out of nowhere?" My brother looked at me strangely now.
"Well, yeah. One happened then the other happened." I clarified.
"That's pretty unusual to have two powers but it's not a bad thing. I wouldn't worry. What, uh, popped out exactly?" His brother asked curiously.
I took a long minute to answer not because I didn't want to but because to tell my brother I'd need to think about it. And then I might want another one. So far thinking about things seemed to cause those things to happen. I couldn't be 100% sure of this bit I did know that I refused to turn into a girl right now. After another few deep deep threats I spoke, "A sandwich."
'Oooooooh thank got I said it okay let think of something else, something that cant pop up like how blue the sky is. Oh these are nice nice leather seats.'
"A sandwich?" His brother asked as if I hadn't just said so.
I gave him a 'duuuuuh, you idiot' look saying, "Ya, a sandwich."
"That's a bit strange, food huh? If nothing else my brother will be fine in the fast food industry." He cackled.
I shoved him on the shoulder playfully, "Come on man."
It was quiet after that neither know what to say but thankfully the city was small making their trip short. The large building he had seen last night was now once again in full view. He felt nervous again and was desperately trying to fight the urge to run away knowing he may just poof out of there at any given moment.
"So what now?" I asked my brother preferring to turn my attention to him rather than the intimidating building.
"Follow me. I already texted them on the way. They should be setting up." Allen didn't know what needed to be 'setup' but opted not to comment he was far to anxious and less thoughts the better right now. 'Think about something real... the building is really tall. The sky is still blue!'
Once they made it past the large doors of the entrance his brother led him down a bunch of winding halways to a room with a steel door before shooing him inside.
"You're not coming in?" I asked.
"No, family isn't allowed. Just you and the evaluators, but dont be too anxious ill be right outside." He was a bit glad had his brother tried to follow him in he would of tried to stop him. He was not sure yet if he could use his powers at will but he did know that if he managed to do so then he would never live it down.
Allen turned the handle on the large iron door and stepped through. Inside he was met with a large empty space, mostly empty anyway, surrounded by thick iron walls. In the center of the room sat a table with three chairs and three people in them. 'The Proctors?'
"Mr. Kight is it? Allen Kight?" I nodded to the middle aged woman who addressed me from behind the table.
"Yes, ma'am."
She picked up a tablet from the table and extended it towards me, "Here, be sure to check all of the information on here to make sure it's correct before we begin."
I stepped forwards to receive the tablet she was offering. Looking it over everything seemed to be correct... had my brother given them all of my information? No, no way he had the time. Was everyone just on file somewhere. The government was creepy.
"It's correct." I confirmed looking uo and handing the tablet back to the woman.
"Great. Now don't be nervous. The process is relatively simple. We will have you explain what your ability does to the best of your knowledge and then give us a demonstration. We will then grade that ability based off of a few factors. Type and grade. You can start whenever your ready." The woman smiled bit it didn't reach her eyes.
The way the woman spoke was professional and polite however she hadn't once introduced herself, none of the three had. It was a bit rude in all honesty but he brushed it off. He was a late bloomer, regardless of his brothers status he was more than likely to be weak as well so associating with him wouldn't help them and he was more than likely interrupting their daily lives to be here. These three were probably not normally proctors only her at the request of his brother.
"Uhum," I cleared my throat, "Well describing the ability is a bit hard but ill do my best." I then went into detail about being hungry and the sandwich and changing bodies... teleporting and changing back. When they all looked at me like I had already lost the plot and every last marble I went for a demonstration. Closing my eyes I imagined something every kid wanted to do at one point. Create a fireball.
Holding my palm up I imagined it coming to life, just a small ball, no a mini sun made up of plasma going through a chemical change, burning. My eyes still closed I could feel the heat on my skin its heat even lifted up my hair but they may still like i can only make fire balls so next I let my cravings take hold and as I opened my eyes I could clearly see the not so small fireball in one girlish palm and a strawberry blueberry greek yogurt smoothie with some rasbery bulba in the bottom in my left in brought it to my mouth and quickly dismissed the fireball with another thought. I looked at the proctors.
"Um, I know you need to record this or whatever but is it possible to not make public that I have to turn into a girl to use my powers?" They were upside down, no I was. 'Damn why's this keep happening?' With my desire out there it happened. Suddenly I was right-side up, no... 'God dammit, they're upside down.' Squeezing my eyes tight I focused and when I opened them I think everything was back in place I spoke again since no one else had answered.
"Before I use my power its much easier to not think of things but after its triggered a small thought seems to be uncontrollable. It seems quite dangerous. I need to not use my power again to cool down and return to normal, at least thats what I've deduced. 20 minutes or so..." I trailed off, this is damn awkward.
"That. That. That is. Thought manifestation!" The man with a big nose and a high hairline who had been sitting in the middle was now standing up looking at me with his jaw on the floor. 'Aaaaaye you might catch flies guy please close it.'
The woman who had spoken first put up her hand to shush the man beside her, "Mr. Kight, your ability is highly unusual and its not something we can evaluate here with pur credentials. I can assure you that the details of this evaluation will be kept confidential until a higher authority can judge it. For now the information we can provide is that you are considered class 4B at minimum however your official rank will not be given until determined by a higher up." She bowed her head slightly.
I was shook, my brother was classified as 3B. No one ever used their type when identifying casually but it was still important to note. You would not see a 1 above a D grade a 2 above a C however 3 and 4 could range an any grade. It was only a way to determine the type of ability one possessed 1 was miscellaneous meaning essentially useless beyond help. 2 was the number to identify a utility based ability. These are extremely useful to society and anyone with this grade would not have an issue getting a cushy job. 3 was combat self explanatory and 4. 4 was a combination of 2 and 3.
I couldn't help but worry. "So does this mean I need to wait and take this whole evaluation over again with someone else?" The sweet voice coming from my mouth made me want to vomit. It simply felt so unnatural.
"No, no! Not at all. Some people will schedule a meeting after your grading is complete but the video recording Mr. Gredus has taken should be enough to evaluate if its not you will be contacted." She smiled again.
"How long will i have to wait? I have school and my abilities might make things difficult." I had been thinking about it alot but the thought of walking into school floating around and warping space like I had just now might make learning algebra impossible or would it? Hummm I would always have snacks that way. Wait no! It would mean showing up as a girl. What would my friends say? I wanted to no STOP. Not finishing that thought right now. "Sigh..."
"Until your evaluation is complete and a plan to move forward is established an exscuse will be sent to your school. The evaluation should be completed within just a few days so you wont have to wait too long. Do you have any more questions?" She asked.
"Um, no I think im good. But um can I wait until my cool down ends? I dont want people to see me like this... " The lady furrowed her brows a bit but she cleared her throat and answered, "Of course we should also confirm we will wait."
Great great. Now it was just me myself and the three guys watching me as I float around drinking my smoothie. I tried to ignore their eyes on my and instead curbed my boredom with my sweet treat about 15 minutes in it was empty so I dropped it. Watching it fall to the ground with a light thunk. I suppose this is litering but in my defense I didn't care. If I thought too hard about it I would loose my concentration and use my powers again being forced to wait even longer. I refuse!
Closing my eyes to relax it was quite nice floating around like this actually that is until I fell to the floor riiiiight on my tail bone. "Son of a bitch." I cursed. Standing up and brushing myself off I nodded towards the proctors before heading towards the door to leave.
