Chapter 85 - Chapter 84 — “The Arrow That Signals War”

Year X784 — Early Summer

Location: Magnolia Town — Fairy Tail Guild

---

The guild hall smelled like dust, splintered wood, and anger.

Fairy Tail had patched the worst of the damage, but the wound Phantom Lord left behind wasn't something boards and nails could fix. Everyone felt it—like a hand around the throat of the guild, squeezing just enough to promise worse.

Lucy stood near the broken wall, arms wrapped around herself.

She kept replaying the words.

"What belongs to us."

Ren noticed.

He always did.

---

POV — Ren

Lucy was trying to look fine. Too fine.

He approached quietly, boots soft against the floor. When she looked up, her smile came a second late.

"That was… intense," she said, attempting lightness. "Guilds really don't do subtle, huh?"

Ren didn't answer right away.

Instead, he reached into his coat.

Lucy blinked. "Ren?"

He placed something gently into her palm.

A golden key.

Slim. Elegant. Etched with the symbol of a centaur archer, bow drawn toward the stars.

Lucy's breath caught.

"Sa… Sagittarius?"

Her fingers trembled as magic recognized magic.

"A Golden Key," she whispered. "But—Ren, this is—"

"Yours," he said simply.

Her head snapped up. "What?! No—Ren, I can't just—these are priceless! And I already have—"

"I know what you have," Ren interrupted gently. "Aquarius. Taurus. Cancer. You don't lack power."

His gaze softened.

"But you lack backup when people decide to target you instead of the guild."

Lucy swallowed.

Ren's voice lowered. "Phantom Lord isn't done. And when they come again, I want you standing with every tool you deserve."

She stared at the key, then at him.

"This isn't charity," he added. "It's trust."

For a long moment, Lucy couldn't speak.

Then her eyes burned—not with fear, but something warmer.

"…Thank you," she said quietly. "I'll take care of him. I promise."

Ren smiled, just a little. "I know."

The key glowed faintly, as if in agreement.

---

POV — Lucy (inner thoughts)

A Golden Key.

Another spirit.

Another bond.

But more than that—

Someone believed in her enough to arm her, not protect her by keeping her weak.

Lucy closed her fingers around Sagittarius' key.

I won't run, she thought. Not this time.

---

A roar shook Magnolia.

Not an explosion.

A magic surge, raw and hostile, rolling over the town like a wave.

Every mage in the guild felt it.

Makarov's expression darkened instantly. "They've started."

---

Phantom Lord Declares War

Magic cannons rose from Phantom Lord's moving fortress like fangs.

Purple light carved scars through Magnolia's streets.

Civilians screamed.

Buildings cracked.

And Fairy Tail moved as one.

"Evacuation teams—now!" Erza commanded, armor flashing into place.

"Mira, protect the east quarter!"

"Natsu, Gray—don't chase yet!"

Ren stood beside Lucy, eyes locked on the looming shadow of Phantom Lord's base.

"So that's their answer," he murmured. "Good. Makes things simple."

---

POV — Guild Battle

Fairy Tail mages clashed with Phantom's forces in the streets.

Fire against iron.

Ice against shadow.

Lightning ripping through summoned constructs.

Natsu tore through a squad with a feral grin. "THIS is more like it!"

Gray skidded beside him, ice spears forming. "Try not to level the town, idiot!"

Juvia moved like living rain, intercepting spells meant for civilians, her water swallowing curses whole.

Mira descended into battle with calm fury, Satan Soul flaring as she crushed Phantom elites without hesitation.

Above it all—

Makarov stood tall, magic pressure alone forcing Phantom's front line back.

---

POV — Lucy (battle)

Lucy's heart pounded.

This wasn't a job.

This wasn't a mission.

This was war.

She raised Sagittarius' key, hands steady despite the chaos.

"Open, Gate of the Archer—Sagittarius!"

Golden light burst forth.

A centaur spirit landed beside her, bow already drawn.

"Yo~ Lucy! Aim where?"

She pointed, jaw set. "There. Keep them off the civilians."

"Roger!"

Arrows of light streaked across the street, precise and controlled—never reckless, never wasteful.

Lucy felt it.

Not fear.

Belonging.

---

POV — Ren

Ren didn't shout.

He didn't rush.

He walked forward, blade humming softly at his side.

A Phantom mage charged him, iron magic roaring.

Ren drew once.

A single, clean slash.

The magic split. The mage collapsed unconscious, street unharmed.

Erza noticed.

So did Phantom.

Their attention shifted.

Good.

Look at me, Ren thought. Not them.

The war lines hardened.

No more warnings.

No more restraint.

---

High above Magnolia, Phantom Lord's master watched the chaos unfold with cold interest.

"Fairy Tail," he murmured. "Let's see how long your bonds hold."

Below, Fairy Tail stood united—angry, battered, unbroken.

And Lucy Heartfilia, golden key in hand, stood among them not as prey—

But as a mage of Fairy Tail.

The war had begun.
