Chapter 21 - Learning

When everyone reached what seemed to be a half conclusion, Elion turned to Foreman and asked him, "Did you reach the same conclusion?"

Faced with Elion's question, Foreman thought about it carefully and said, "Although the idea of diagnosing subacute sclerosing panencephalitis just because his mother was not vaccinated and then he was separated from her is extremely rare, I would say it's unique."

House, who had been thinking, said, "In any case, we'll know once we extract the cerebrospinal fluid."

Foreman thought that was extreme, but since House suggested it, he said, "Yes, we can do it."

"Then you're in charge." House left this delicate procedure to Foreman, who was the one with the most experience.

Elion, with a flattering smile, approached Foreman and asked, "Do you need an assistant? Seeing something like that will help me a lot."

Foreman nodded and said, "Since you were the one who suggested this, let's do it."

In Foreman's opinion, the fact that Elion had asked for his opinion must have meant that he only knew half of what subacute sclerosing panencephalitis was.

If that was the case, then Elion might not be able to perform the lumbar puncture procedure required to extract the cerebrospinal fluid.

Moreover, Elion, who had never had hands-on experience at this level, would be directly involved in the operation to gain experience. After all, if he made the slightest mistake, he could cause paralysis in the patient!

That was why it had to be taken seriously, and he believed that for someone as talented as Elion, participating in this kind of examination would be very beneficial.

"Yes, but we also have to warn the parents that if Dan has already entered the second stage of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis, he could die at any moment."

"Cameron will take care of that." House had everything planned out.

"Well then, let's not delay." Foreman left with Elion while explaining how they would perform the procedure and how dangerous it was.

This was originally his area of specialization, and it was the perfect opportunity to show his skills in front of the talented intern.

Because of that, he was relatively happy and had accepted that very rare diagnosis that House had believed from Elion.

"Do you know the theory?" Foreman turned to Elion to ask him.

Elion knew it, so he nodded. "Yes, I've also done the procedure hundreds of times, but never in real practice."

"Then do it."

"What?"

"I'll guide you at all times, don't worry." Foreman believed that Elion would be able to do something as simple as this with his guidance.

He wanted to see if this young intern was really prepared for everything. And if he refused right now, he would know that everything he had thought about Elion would be false, and he would be very disappointed.

"Understood." Elion was worried, because up to now he had not had any attack, and if he went into a crisis during this procedure, he would put a child's life into hell forever.

After everyone had discussed what they would do, they first needed the parents' authorization in order to proceed.

Dan's mother's face was full of concern, even though there were many technical terms in the conversation.

But she could still sense danger in the words "second stage" and "die."

She looked at House, who was motionless, and said somewhat anxiously, "Doctor House, won't you do it yourself?"

"Oh, you have nothing to worry about. This procedure is in the best hands." House knew that Elion's young appearance was greatly underestimated.

"Which of the two will do it?"

"The young one."

Faced with the barrage of questions from Dan's mother, House simply raised his hand to signal her to stop. "With Foreman in charge, nothing will happen. He was the best student in the university's neuroscience department."

"Also, after graduating, he worked in our hospital for many years and faced countless difficult situations. You can be at ease about his decisions. If someone like him believes in Elion, then there's no problem."

"As for that intern, I can assure you he's the best young doctor I've ever seen."

With House's reassurance, the mother's emotions finally stabilized.

She looked painfully through the observation window next to the room at her son, who had been asked to lie on his left side.

Then Cameron whispered something in front of her son to distract him.

Then, under Foreman's guidance, Elion took out a lumbar puncture needle with a long tip and, after disinfecting and covering the area, performed the procedure.

"The key is to be slow, don't rush too much. Remember he's a child, you have to be gentler and stop your push earlier, since you're not going to go that deep."

"Remember, the lumbar puncture is performed in the lumbar region between the third and fourth lumbar vertebrae."

"Understood." Elion nodded, and slowly inserted the long lumbar puncture needle into the lumbar region between the third and fourth lumbar vertebrae.

This scene made Dan's mother feel deeply distressed; what kind of pain must her son be enduring?
