Chapter 17 - CP:17 Five More Minutes?!

The next morning arrived with soft golden light filtering through the cave's narrow skylights, carrying the distant calls of morning birds and the faint roar of the waterfall outside. The air still held traces of last night's intensity—musk, citrus, pine, and the sharp minerally scent of the cave—but it had settled into something calmer, almost reverent.

Alex woke slowly, body heavy and deliciously sore in places he hadn't known could be sore.

Every small shift sent pleasant aftershocks rippling through him. He was sandwiched between two impossibly hot and cool walls of muscle and scale: Leo's broad chest pressed to his back, one massive arm draped possessively across Alex's waist, and Naga's thickest coil looped loosely around both their hips like a living blanket.

For a moment, Alex just... existed.

Breathing in. Breathing out. Feeling safe and warm and thoroughly claimed in a way that should have terrified him but instead felt oddly... right.

Then his brain fully came online, and reality crashed back in.

The heist is TODAY.

His eyes snapped open.

"Oh crap," he whispered. "Oh crap, oh crap, we have to—"

"Shh," Leo rumbled against his back, the vibration of his voice traveling directly through Alex's spine.

"Still sleeping."

"We can't be sleeping! We have a TEMPLE to rob! A PSYCHIC SAINTESS to avoid! MAGIC MURDER STATUES to—"

"Five more minutes," Leo mumbled, nuzzling into Alex's curls with surprising gentleness for a creature that could crush bone with his jaws. "You smell nice. Like us."

Alex's face went red. "That's—you can't just—we don't have TIME for—"

From his other side, Naga's eyes cracked open, emerald and still sleep-hazy. "Little mate, if you do not stop wiggling, I will tie you down with my coils until noon."

"But the HEIST—"

"Will happen at SUNSET," Naga said, his voice rough and low. "Which is approximately twelve hours from now. You have time."

"But preparation! Planning! What if something goes wrong? What if—"

"What if," Leo interrupted gently, "you let yourself rest for ten more minutes before we begin planning the most dangerous night of our lives?"

Alex opened his mouth to argue.

Then closed it.

Then sighed deeply and let himself sink back into the nest of fur and scales.

"Fine. Ten minutes."

"Good mate," Naga purred, tightening his coil just slightly.

They lay in comfortable silence for exactly thirty seconds before Leo's curiosity got the better of him.

"Alex?"

"Mm?"

"Last night, you called me... 'Alpha.' What does that mean?"

Alex froze. He'd been hoping they'd forgotten that particular heat-induced word vomit.

[System: Oh no, Host! You introduced ABO terminology to a world that doesn't have it! Awkward! Want me to provide a explanation template for 5 SP?]

"Absolutely not," Alex muttered.

"Not what?" Leo asked, confused.

"Nothing. Talking to the system." Alex took a breath. "Uh, 'Alpha' is... it's from where I come from. It means someone strong, protective, a leader. Someone who takes care of others."

Leo's purr intensified, rumbling through Alex's entire body. "I like that. Alpha. It suits me."

From the other side, Naga hissed softly. "And what am I, then? "

"No! No, in my worl_tribe, you'd also be an Alpha. You're both—" Alex gestured vaguely, "—very strong and protective and, uh, possessive."

"Possessive is good," Naga said, sounding pleased.

"Possessive means we keep you safe."

"Possessive means you argue over fish."

"That was ONE time—"

"Yesterday you fought over who got to carry me to the stream."

"That was a matter of—"

"You got stuck in a tree branch because you were racing."

Leo coughed, which sounded suspiciously like a laugh. "That was unfortunate."

"YOU PUSHED ME INTO THE BRANCH," Naga accused.

"I merely suggested an alternate route—"

"With your PAW to my FACE—"

"BOYS," Alex said loudly, then winced because his voice came out hoarse. "Can we maybe save the bickering for after we've successfully committed magical theft?"

Both beastmen subsided, looking appropriately chastised.

"Sorry, little mate," Naga murmured, pressing a gentle kiss to Alex's shoulder.

"Apologies, small one," Leo added, doing the same to the back of Alex's neck.

The dual kisses sent a shiver down Alex's spine that had nothing to do with temperature.

[System: Ooh, Host, your body's already responding again! Heat Status: 15% and rising! At this rate, you'll hit critical in about 6-8 hours! Perfect timing for the heist! :D]

"System, I swear to god—"

"The spirit is bothering you again?" Leo asked.

"It's telling me I might go into heat RIGHT AS WE'RE ROBBING THE TEMPLE."

Silence.

Then both beastmen spoke in unison: "WHAT."

"Recessive omega problems," Alex said flatly. "Apparently my body hates me and wants me to fail at life."

Naga's coils tightened protectively. "Then we postpone. We wait until your cycle stabilizes—"

"We CAN'T postpone! The ceremony is TONIGHT! It's the only time the temple will be unguarded! And Leo's Challenge of Claim deadline is ticking!" Alex twisted to look at both of them. "We have to do this tonight. Even if my body decides to betray me halfway through."

"That is the WORST plan," Leo said seriously.

"It's the ONLY plan."

"What if you go into heat in the middle of the temple?" Naga demanded. "What if the statues detect the scent? What if—"

"Then you'll have to carry me out while I'm a hormonal mess and hope we don't die," Alex said with far more confidence than he felt.

"Look, I'm not HAPPY about this either, but we're out of options. Unless you want to Challenge Raqasha directly?"

Both beastmen exchanged looks.

"No," they said together.

"Then we stick with the plan. In and out, grab the stone, try not to trigger any ancient magical security systems or my stupid biology attack." Alex took a shaky breath.

"We can do this."

[System: Optimism Level: Dangerously High! Reality Check: You're planning to rob a temple while potentially going into heat, with two mates who will absolutely lose their minds if you start pheromone-bombing in a sacred space. But sure! You can TOTALLY do this! :D]

"I hate you so much," Alex mumbled.

Leo nuzzled closer. "We won't let anything happen to you. If your heat starts, we'll get you out immediately."

"The stone—"

"Can wait," Naga said firmly. "Your safety is more important than any quest."

Alex felt his chest go tight. "You guys are way too good to me."

"Impossible," they said in unison again, which would have been cute if Alex wasn't currently having an emotional crisis.

"Okay," he said, voice wobbling slightly. "Let's... let's get up and plan this properly. We have—" he glanced at the sunlight, "—about ten hours until sunset. That's enough time to prepare, right?"

"More than enough," Leo confirmed, though he made no move to release Alex from his hold.

Neither did Naga.

"...Are you two going to let me up?"

"No," both beastmen said.

"Why not?!"

"Because," Naga said, pressing his face into Alex's hair, " Right now," Leo added softly, his arm tightening around Alex's waist, "we just want to hold you. For a little longer."

Alex pouted. "That's... that's really unfair. Using shameless pick up lines against me when we have a schedule."

"Is it working?" Leo asked.

"...Maybe."

"Then we stay," Naga decided. "Five more minutes."

"You said that ten minutes ago!"

"And now I'm saying it again. Five. More. Minutes."

Alex sighed, but he didn't protest when Leo's purr intensified and Naga's coils adjusted to hold him more comfortably.

Five more minutes.

In the grand scheme of magical heists and irregular heat cycles and sacred stones, what was five more minutes of safety?

[System: Domestic Fluff Level: MAXIMUM. Current Status: Three idiots cuddling before committing felony theft. Recommended viewing: ALL OF IT.]

Outside the cave, the jungle woke up fully—birds calling, insects buzzing, the waterfall providing a constant backdrop of white noise.

Inside the cave, three very different beings held each other close, knowing that tonight would change everything.

For better or worse.
