Chapter 5 - Wedding Preparations Begin

The days following the contract meeting passed so quickly that Kavya barely had time to breathe.

For the first time since starting her Home Kitchen business, she found herself handling a project far beyond anything she had ever imagined. Every morning began before sunrise and ended long after midnight. Lists covered every available surface in her house. Guest estimates, ingredient requirements, staff schedules, transportation arrangements, cooking timelines, emergency backup plans—her entire world had become a collection of numbers and responsibilities.

Yet strangely enough, she felt alive.

Exhausted, yes.

Terrified, definitely.

But alive.

For months, her life had revolved around hospital visits, medicine bills, and the growing fear of losing Baba. The wedding contract had not erased those worries, but it had given her something she desperately needed.

Hope.

The advance payment had already arrived in her account.

The moment she saw the amount, she had silently cried in her room for nearly fifteen minutes.

Not because it solved everything.

Because for the first time in months, she could see a path forward.

A difficult path.

But still a path.

That morning, the Sharma house was unusually busy.

The dining table had disappeared beneath stacks of paperwork. Several local women who occasionally worked with Kavya had gathered in the living room while she explained responsibilities.

"I need everyone to be careful," she said, looking around the room. "This isn't a normal event. We cannot afford mistakes."

The women nodded.

Most of them had worked with her before.

They trusted her.

And more importantly, they knew how much this opportunity meant.

One of them raised a question.

"How many guests exactly?"

"Approximately two thousand."

The room immediately fell silent.

Several women exchanged shocked looks.

Even now, the number sounded intimidating.

Kavya understood their reaction.

She felt exactly the same.

But showing fear would help no one.

"We'll divide everything properly," she continued. "Breakfast preparations will have one team. Lunch another. Evening events another. Nobody will be handling everything alone."

The tension eased slightly.

For nearly two hours she continued planning, assigning responsibilities, and solving logistical problems.

By the time everyone left, she felt mentally exhausted.

Yet there was still more work waiting.

Always more work.

As she organized her files, a soft cough drew her attention.

Baba.

He was sitting near the window again.

The sight instantly darkened her mood.

Every day he seemed weaker.

Every day his body looked thinner.

It terrified her.

"Baba, did you eat?"

He smiled.

"Yes."

She narrowed her eyes.

"Properly?"

The smile widened.

Which usually meant no.

With a sigh, she walked into the kitchen and returned a few minutes later carrying a bowl.

Without asking permission, she sat beside him and handed it over.

He looked almost guilty.

The reaction would have been amusing under different circumstances.

"You can't skip meals."

"I'm not hungry."

"I don't care."

"Kavya—"

"No."

The firmness in her voice surprised even him.

For a moment, they simply looked at each other.

Then Baba laughed softly.

"You're becoming stricter every year."

"And you're becoming more stubborn every year."

The laughter faded.

Silence settled between them.

A heavy silence.

Because both understood what remained unspoken.

The surgery.

The money.

The fear.

Finally, Baba placed a gentle hand over hers.

"Don't destroy your health trying to save mine."

The words struck her harder than expected.

For several seconds she couldn't respond.

Then she looked away.

Because the alternative was crying.

And she was tired of crying.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the city, life inside the Singh Mansion was moving at an entirely different pace.

Wedding preparations had officially begun.

The mansion resembled a command center more than a family home.

Decorators arrived daily.

Design consultants moved between rooms carrying samples and blueprints.

Florists discussed arrangements.

Event planners coordinated schedules.

Security teams reviewed protocols.

Every corner of the estate buzzed with activity.

Yet somehow, despite the chaos, breakfast remained sacred.

Every member of the family was expected to attend.

This particular morning was no exception.

At precisely eight o'clock, Aarav entered the dining room carrying a tablet filled with business reports.

His expression suggested he had already completed several hours of work.

Which was probably true.

Across the table, Kabir was attempting to convince Meera that he deserved control over the wedding music.

Meera looked horrified.

"You have terrible taste."

"My taste is excellent."

"No."

"Yes."

"No."

Vihaan glanced up from his coffee.

"She's right."

Kabir looked betrayed.

"You too?"

"Especially me."

The argument immediately intensified.

Aarav ignored all of it.

Years of experience had taught him that intervening only encouraged them.

Unfortunately, peace never lasted long around his siblings.

Especially when Kabir was involved.

"By the way," Kabir suddenly announced, "I met the catering team list yesterday."

Nobody paid attention.

Which was a mistake.

Because Kabir interpreted silence as encouragement.

"The owner is young."

Still no reaction.

"A woman."

Meera finally looked interested.

"So?"

"So nothing."

"Then why mention it?"

Kabir grinned.

"I heard she's handling the entire wedding herself."

Now even Aarav glanced up.

Only briefly.

But Kabir noticed.

And immediately smiled wider.

Interesting.

Very interesting.

The breakfast conversation continued.

However, something had shifted.

A small detail.

Almost insignificant.

Yet enough to remain in the back of Aarav's mind.

The caterer.

Kavya Sharma.

He remembered her from the meeting.

Most people became nervous when speaking with influential clients.

She hadn't.

She had been anxious, certainly.

But not intimidated.

There was a difference.

And people like that were rare.

The thought disappeared as quickly as it arrived.

Work demanded attention.

Feelings, observations, personal curiosities—

None of those mattered.

Not anymore.

---

Elsewhere on the estate, Arjun was conducting security inspections.

Unlike the rest of the household, he welcomed routine.

Routine was predictable.

Predictability meant control.

And control meant safety.

The upcoming wedding worried him.

Large gatherings always created vulnerabilities.

Too many guests.

Too many unfamiliar faces.

Too many opportunities for problems.

As he reviewed surveillance coverage, one of his officers approached.

"Sir."

"What is it?"

"The catering team schedule arrived."

Arjun accepted the folder.

A routine action.

Nothing more.

At least until his eyes landed on one particular name.

Kavya Sharma.

Something about the name felt familiar.

He couldn't immediately place it.

After a moment, he dismissed the thought and continued reviewing reports.

Yet a strange feeling lingered.

The same feeling he'd been experiencing for days.

An instinctive warning.

As though something important was approaching.

Something unavoidable.

Years of experience had taught him not to ignore such instincts.

And his instincts were rarely wrong.

---

Later that afternoon, Kavya received a message requesting her presence at the Singh Mansion.

A detailed menu discussion had been scheduled.

The moment she read the message, her stomach tightened.

The mansion.

Not the hotel.

Not an office.

The actual Singh residence.

For some reason, that felt far more intimidating.

Still, refusing wasn't an option.

After gathering her documents and menu samples, she left immediately.

Nearly an hour later, her vehicle stopped outside enormous iron gates.

For several seconds, she simply stared.

The estate beyond looked unreal.

Like something from a movie.

Perfect gardens stretched into the distance.

Elegant fountains sparkled beneath sunlight.

Luxury vehicles moved across wide stone pathways.

Even the security arrangements looked more sophisticated than anything she had ever seen.

She suddenly became painfully aware of her simple clothing and modest background.

Taking a deep breath, she stepped forward.

The guards checked her identification before granting access.

As she walked through the gates, she couldn't shake the feeling that she was entering an entirely different world.

A world filled with wealth, influence, secrets...

And people whose lives were about to become deeply connected with her own.

She just didn't know it yet.
