Chapter 29 - Chapter 29: Colossus

The System did not raise its voice. It never needed to. A pane of pale light slid into existence above the ruined courtyard, clean and indifferent against a landscape still stained by the last three waves.

[FINAL WAVE INITIATED]

A second line appeared beneath it, slower this time, as if the System wanted everyone to understand exactly what it was doing.

ENEMY COMPOSITION UPDATED.

MULTIPLICITY APPLIED.

[YOU'RE WELCOME]

The meaning became obvious a heartbeat later. Movement spread across the tree line. Three Veil Hounds slipped between the trunks instead of one. Three warped sentinels emerged behind them, rusted weapons dragging through the brush. Three twisted humanoid creatures followed, each bearing the same familiar deformities as enemies the survivors had already learned how to kill. Then more appeared. Every type they had faced throughout the Tutorial was returning in triplicate.

The remaining survivors tensed together. Weapons came up, spells gathered, and someone near the rear muttered a curse under their breath. Dorian stepped forward without looking back. "Jenn, air control. Keep anything ranged or magical busy. Wilhelm, release everything you have. Helena, group them. Lena, burn whatever she gives you." Everyone moved before he finished speaking. No questions came. Nobody argued about the formation or asked whether he was sure. Dorian registered that fact distantly and let it disappear beneath everything more important. He hadn't made a conscious decision to take command. The battlefield had simply presented a problem, the answer had formed, and the others trusted him enough to follow it. Dorian drew Fang of the Eclipse and Mercy That Never Came.

A Veil Hound lunged from the side. Veilstep pulled him into shadow for a fraction of a second, and he reappeared behind the creature as its claws tore through empty air. Fang of the Eclipse punched through its spine. The Hound folded immediately, dark blood and shadow spilling from the wound before its body struck the ground. A second creature came at him from the front. Dorian turned and struck once. Mercy hit beneath the jaw with enough force to crush the throat, bone and sinew collapsing around the blade before the body twisted down in two uneven motions. The amount of damage surprised him. Level Eighteen strength, upgraded weapons, and the new armor had changed what constituted a serious enemy. Predator's Focus flickered on. The battlefield sharpened into vectors and structural weaknesses.

He saw where the next attacker's knee would fail, where another creature's balance depended on a damaged hip, and exactly how far a sentinel could extend its weapon before overcommitting. Dorian killed three more before the familiar pressure began building behind his eyes. Then he shut the skill off. He already knew how these enemies died. There was no reason to pay the price for information he had learned during earlier waves. Lena operated with the same ruthless efficiency. A creature broke through Helena's shadows and reached her line only for Lena to drive a compressed blast of fire directly into its chest. The spell detonated inward instead of outward, burning through the torso without wasting energy across the battlefield. Helena had stopped waiting for enemies to cluster naturally. She made the clusters herself. Shadows spread beneath several charging monsters before rising as hooked constructs that caught ankles, wrists, torsos, and throats. Helena dragged the targets together, compressing them into Lena's firing lanes before tightening the curse. Limbs disappeared beneath the pressure. Screams ended almost immediately.

Wilhelm raised one hand. The dead answered. Risen poured into the clearing in numbers Dorian hadn't seen him control before, attacking without concern for defense or survival. They pinned living enemies beneath combined weight, tore at joints with bare hands and teeth, and pulled in opposite directions until bodies failed. Wilhelm stood behind them with detached concentration, adjusting the violence with tiny movements of his fingers. Above the battlefield, Jenn became a streak of gold. Her wings carried her over the fighting while radiant energy gathered along the length of her halberd.

She drove through one creature at full speed, pierced another on the follow-through, then banked upward as both detonated behind her. Every pass left scorched earth and drifting ash. For several minutes she looked less like the frightened healer who had followed Calvin through ruined hallways and more like something built specifically for war. It should have taken them hours to clear enemies arriving in those numbers. It took minutes. Bodies covered the courtyard and clearing. Smoke drifted between the trees while the last familiar monster fell beneath a Risen swarm. Survivors slowly lowered their weapons. Someone laughed, the sound sharp and disbelieving. Another shouted in celebration.

The response spread weakly through the remaining nine, relief trying to become something larger. Dorian didn't join them. Both daggers hung loosely at his sides as he turned toward the forest. Nothing moved. No new enemies emerged. The System remained silent. The absence bothered him more than another attack would have. Apex Predator refused to settle. Every instinct beneath the Slayer remained coiled as though the real threat had yet to arrive. Dorian stared between the trees. Too easy. The thought barely finished before the forest reacted. Trees began bending toward the ground. There was no wind. Thick trunks bowed beneath invisible pressure until wood groaned through the clearing. Several snapped outright, their breaks sharp enough to silence the survivors behind him.

The earth started trembling, not with footsteps but with a steady compression that rattled teeth and blurred vision. Birds erupted from the canopy in a black wave. Hundreds of them fled simultaneously, pouring away from one section of forest as though everything capable of leaving had received the same warning. The survivors turned toward the disturbance. Something pushed through the tree line. Massive trunks shattered around it. Stone broke beneath its weight. The creature stood upright only in the loosest interpretation of the word, towering above the clearing as a grotesque fusion of rock, bone, and dead wood. Thick roots formed sections of its limbs beside slabs of stone and fused skeletal structures.

Dead bark hung from its body in overlapping plates. Several human torsos had been absorbed into its core, bodies joined together beneath layers of mineral growth while faces remained visible, mouths frozen open in silent agony. Each step flattened the terrain. Roots cracked beneath its feet. Stones sank into the earth as though the ground had decided resisting was pointless. Pressure rolled outward from the thing and immediately affected the survivors. Dorian's balance shifted. Helena staggered half a step. Someone behind them dropped to one knee as vertigo hit. Gravity itself seemed slightly wrong within the creature's presence. The System attempted to identify it.

[ENEMY IDENTIFIED: WORLDBRE—]

The text vanished mid-word. Another pane flickered into existence, stuttered twice, then stabilized.

BOSS ENTITY

NONSTANDARD

Jenn attacked first. Radiant power condensed along her halberd until the weapon screamed with energy. She hurled a lance of golden light directly into the creature's chest. The spell struck dead center and shattered. Light washed across rock and bark without leaving a visible mark. The Colossus kept walking.

Lena followed with a concentrated torrent of fire. Flames engulfed one side of the giant and climbed across dead wood before rolling harmlessly away from stone. Wilhelm sent his undead forward in a mass. They never reached it. One sweeping arm passed through the swarm and reduced dozens of corpses to fragments.

Helena spread both hands and drove shadows around the Colossus' legs. The bindings tightened enough to slow one step by perhaps half a second. Then the creature moved forward and tore through the darkness as though it were wet cloth. It never roared. It gave no indication that it even recognized their attacks as meaningful. Dorian felt Apex Predator surge without being activated. His awareness flooded with projections and structural analysis, searching desperately for the pattern beneath the thing's movement.

Nothing useful emerged. There were seams in the body, stress points between stone and root, places where balance depended on heavier sections of mass, but none of them offered what Dorian needed. This wasn't prey. The realization landed heavily. The tripled enemies hadn't been the final wave. They had been preparation. Momentum. A way to make the survivors believe their new strength had pushed them beyond the Tutorial's threats before the System revealed what the wave was actually built around. "Back." Dorian didn't raise his voice. Everyone moved anyway. "Fall back. Now."

The tone did what shouting wouldn't have. Survivors retreated immediately while Jenn dropped from the air and Helena pulled Lena with her. Dorian remained in front. The Colossus raised one enormous arm. He Veilstepped as it descended. Stone exploded where Dorian had stood. He emerged along the creature's flank and drove both Legendary daggers into a seam between bone and rock. Fang of the Eclipse penetrated first. Mercy followed. The resistance felt nothing like flesh, armor, or anything he had cut before. It felt dense enough that forcing the blades deeper became a contest against the world itself. Void Bleed activated across the wound. Shadow Lock followed. Darkness spread several inches along the seam.

The Colossus took another step. Dorian ripped both weapons free and Veilstepped again as the creature's hand swept through his previous position. He reappeared several yards away with his chest burning from the sudden mana demand. The attack had done almost nothing. Strength capable of tearing through the earlier wave barely registered against this thing. The Colossus turned toward him. Dorian stared upward and felt doubt enter for the first time. It wasn't panic. His mind simply reached the obvious conclusion and refused to lie about it. Their established abilities weren't enough. Their levels weren't enough. The equipment the System had just showered them with wasn't enough. If he fought according to the rules it had given him, the thing standing in front of him would kill everyone. The Colossus raised its arm again. The light above the clearing dimmed without clouds covering the sky, as though something larger had moved between the world and whatever allowed it to exist. Dorian tightened his grip around both daggers while the shadows around his boots began to gather. The choice forming inside him felt familiar. Every major step forward had come when he stopped accepting the limits placed around him. The Alpha. Blackmark. Slayer. The Echo. Every time the System presented a boundary, survival had required him to do something it had not planned for. The Colossus began bringing its arm down. A warning appeared across Dorian's vision, arriving noticeably later than the threat itself.
