Leah immediately adjusted her posture and looked down, stirring the sauce on her plate.
"Oh, I only meant... I was just curious," Leah corrected quickly, a stiff, small laugh escaping her lips. "This island feels so isolated. I just wondered if the people here ever get bored, being stuck in the same place all the time."
Emma smiled with understanding, sensing no suspicion from the fragile-looking girl.
"They have a routine schedule for going to the mainland. But as for me, I have no place I want to go out there. Your world might be vast, Miss, but for me, the world is wherever I feel useful. So, I almost never leave."
Leah nodded slowly, her mind working rapidly to process the information. "And they, the people who go, where do they usually go? Is there a specific place they visit?"
"Most of them go to visit family living on the mainland," Emma answered casually while taking a small bite of Huckleberry Pie. "They meet with their families and their loved ones."
